New Orleans specialties near Intercontinental (St. Charles & Poydras)

Around the corner from you about 3 blocks away at 814 Gravier is the Store. I've passed it many times and wanted to stop in but always too much in a hurry. It gets some good reviews on different sites.

I second Bon Ton. I would also suggest Herbsaint - right across Poydras on St. Charles.

Domenica

I agree. I spent about 60 nights over the past two years in N.O. and have had probably 5 meals at Domenica. While some meals have been better than others, the staff have been gracious and helpful, even when I was dining single.

RIP Verte Marte

Sad for Verdi, but I think you can still get your favorites at Rouse's in the FQ - def the Hubig's and Zapps.

Best restaurants and dishes that won't break the bank...

I find N.O. expensive, but I sort of expect it due to the recovery and the tourist market. There are some good places with reasonable prices. Wood fired pizza at Domenica, burgers at Yo Mamas, small plates at Cochon. Others on the board will probably tell you to plan your big meals around lunch for best value. In all my travels to N.O. I haven't been able to do that yet. I'm usually dropping $40 - $60 with tax and tip.

JBR.....still full. And Herbsaint was thumbs down.

Sorry to hear about Herbsaint. It does sound like a bad night. I've had some good fish there and companions loved the goat cheese beignets. I'll be bringing a vegetarian friend there next week. (gulp)

Bon Ton Cafe's Macoroni & Cheese

We thought it was underwhelming on a recent visit also, but to some I guess it recall home. I actually liked the cauliflower au gratin better.

Where To Eat In Atlanta For This Northerner

If you're looking for BBQ, definitely go to Fox Brothers. Decatur has lots of family friendly options and it's nice to walk around there - Taqueria del Sol, Farm Burger, Leon's Full Service, Cakes and Ale, Watershed.

Iris and MiLa

I ate at Iris last Thursday. I had the Halibut. It was good - not great. Service was very good. Restaurant was pretty empty for 7:30.

N.O. on Foot

I thought I'd might update each month as I come and go into town as a thanks to all who posted here and pointed me in the right directions. I walked out to Verdi Mart last night. I have to chuckle at some of the places I've been to. The folks back home would walk right past. I got the Creole Chicken with Broccoli and Green Beans for under $9. It was a massive amount of food. The guy at the check out was extremely nice. There really wasn't anything Creole about the chicken (more like cheese sauce), but it was a good breast. The broccoli with cheese sauce was bland but seemed fresh. The green beans also seemed fresh and were well seasoned. I was amazed at the variety of entrees in the case, and I wondered where it's all made. I'll probably be back.

N.O. on Foot

Tonight I tried Country Flame, and I'm undecided. Chips are bagged, and as they were loading supplies in, I saw #10 cans of Rico's cheese sauce. I was steered toward the chicken fajita's, abut I chose pork. The pork itself was well marinated and very tasty. The condiments were skimpy except for the mountain of lettuce. The rice and refried beans were nothing special. HOWEVER, CF did meet my requirements of good food on a budget. It was good - not bad. Total tab with a Bud Lite draft was 11.45 plus tip.

OK- so far I'm liking this. Tonight, I went to Cajun Mike's - a whole in the wall bar with lots of personality. Had the Cochon De Lait - roast pork with pickles, gravy, and french fries!!! The pork was delicious. Sandwich, fries, and two Bud Lites - $11.50. Very nice.

I'm in town once a month from Thursday to Sunday for school, and I stay near Carondelet and Canal with no car. Any ideas for dinner on a student budget within easy walking distance?
Thanks.
