Minneapolis - Truly sour dough

Hey! I spent a happy Saturday morning sampling breads at St. Agnes, which I have to agree are artisan, but still left me pining for sour sourdough with a fine crust. I like the breads at Rustica, The Baker's Wife, French Meadow and Turtlebread ... and whoever makes those lovely baguettes they sell at Coastal Seafood fish market on Minnehaha. Nothing is finer than baguette and sweet butter!

Minneapolis - Apple cider donuts

Anne and Quince,

Well, I went to the St. Paul Farmer's Market this morning and got myself a half gallon of cider and a dozen cider donuts from Bob's Bluebird Apple orchard. Cider donuts are fantastic: tender & dense, not too sweet, and fact maybe just a slight tang from the buttermilk beneath the cinnamon and sugar...but no pronounced cider flavor??? I love a cake donut. The raw cider is also wonderful. I meant to take a photo of the stand, but forgot my camera...so, here instead is a photo of the donuts.

I never, in reference to the other post above, made it out to any of the orchards...I'll have to save that for the next donut run.

Also, there was still a lot of produce at the market and plenty of cheese, meat, and honey.

Minneapolis - Apple cider donuts

Anne, I plan to try out the St. Paul Farmer's market this weekend and I will indeed report back...I'm also going to check out the apple orchard variety, which I have been told are the most authentic!

Thanks!

Minneapolis - Apple cider donuts

Hello! I just moved here from the Bay Area. Word on the street is that the best fall treat is a cider donut, yet no one seems to be selling them. Is this something you have to go to the orchard to get? Thank you!

I would have to agree with you on Acme being the best. Although, I love the little butter and meat sandwiches Tartine makes. Nothing better. It looks like I'll also have to check out Rustica...

Minneapolis - Truly sour dough

Hey! Thank you for all the wonderful posts! I have been busy doing my newby Minnesota stuff and completely forgot to check on the bread! I have had the sourdough at Baker's Wife and Turtle Bread and while both are delicious, neither are quite right.
So, I'm on my way to Saint Agnes this weekend.

I came back up because I'm looking for an apple cider donut, which everyone tells me is the bomb...yet no one makes it????

Minneapolis - Truly sour dough

Hello! Just moved here from the Bay Area and I'm really missing my bakery ... anyone have any advice on where to get some crusty, truly sour, sourdough?

How about a fiselle?

I live near Minnehaha falls in Minneapolis, if that provides a guide, but I'm willing to drive!

Thank you!

Minneapolis-help refine the big list!

Hey, might be too late for my two cents, but my favorite restaurant right now is Town Talk, on Lake Street and Minnehaha (very close to uptown), where you can eat for $5-$30. The seafood is always amazing and so is the pork chop, but the hamburger, I think, is one of the best in town. Great fries and an excellant bar -- macerated cherries in the Manhattans are tops -- and some of my favorite frickles. On the spendy side, I love A Rebours, which is in downtown St. Paul. If I had only one night, that is where I would go...French Bistro, looking out onto the street, can't miss with a starter of mussels and Lillet. Very fine.

Pastry in San Rafael

I've just relocated to Marin -- anyone know where to go to get French pastry and a strong cup of coffee in San Rafael?

40th birthday dinner in SA

La Reve is excellent, probably the best in San Antonio, but has a limited menu, so you might try Biga -- on the River Walk, close enough that you could walk to it. I think the food there is spectacular, however you might have to sacrifice the wine pairings ...

Best truly French croissants in Berkeley?

I vote La Farine's, and while you are there try the Princess cake, a slice of marzipan heaven.
