ethnic in wicker park/bucktown/ukrainian village area
Thank you everyone who has helped so much with our trip (from Los Angeles) in August. One day we are going to explore Wicker Park/Bucktown/Ukranian Village area and would appreciate some restaurant suggestions for ethnic restaurants for lunch and rest-stop snacks. We are going out to big "fancy" dinners, so low-key and delicious is what we're looking for here. Thanks in advance!
Coming from LA to Chicago
All good to know--thanks to both of you. Could also just go for a plain old good Chicago Vienna Dog. Would that be at Portillo's or Franks 'n Dawgs?
Coming from LA to Chicago
This is so much appreciated. I just bought a book on Chicago, will plot our adventures--and might get back for a specific restaurant in a specific area as we will be there for four days. Thanks again for your time...and tastes!
Coming from LA to Chicago
Thank you nsxtasy and uhockey. BTW, we are coming from Los Angeles...and we are staying on the Magnificent Mile. I actually went to high school in Chicago but haven't been back since so I am really looking forward to seeing a brand new city (yes, it was a long time ago!).
Coming from LA to Chicago
I'm coming to Chicago with a friend and my 14-year-old daughter--we all love to eat, and would appreciate some recommendations:
1. If price is not a concern, what are the best, most memorable places for dinner? We will be there four nights.
2. Where should we go for pizza (we always order from Malnati's and love it!)?
3. Where should we go to grab great Chicago hot dogs?
4. What would you recommend for nice, light lunches since we will be having big dinners?
Thanks in advance....
Taking my teenage daughter to SF
THANK YOU to everyone. We are leaving tomorrow and I have a long list now!
Taking my teenage daughter to SF
Staying in Union Square, but we like to "walk around and explore." She loves dim sum (do you know a good place in Chinatown, which is near where we will be staying?), pasta...really anything except burgers. In nyc, Fatty Crab is one of her favorites.
Taking my teenage daughter to SF
Any recommendations for a foodie daughter who is 13?
Meyer Lemons - best use of 6 beauties!
I just made Meyer Lemon Bars--I used Ina's recipe, substituted Meyer lemons for regular.
Eggs - what's your favourite preparation (dinner)
Scrambled eggs with smoked salmon...or hard boiled eggs turned on their side in the middle of a meatloaf (surprise!).
What to do with a whole bunch of limes
Guacamole, the real deal, no tomatoes, just lime, kosher salt, serrano chile and white onion.
Favorite Barefoot Contessa Recipes?
LOVE her brownie tart, parmesan chicken, mexican chicken soup, spanikopita, roasted vegetable soup...just about everything (except espresso chocolate cheesecake.
Steak and WHAT?
Wash potatoes as early as you can so they are as dry as possible; cut for maximum-skin exposure; put on baking sheet and sprinkle with a little bit of good olive oil and a lot of kosher salt; combine well with hands. Bake at 425, until brown and crispy.
Brussels Sprouts recipe?
Roast 'em with olive oil and kosher salt...and I just made the most delicious Braised Brussels Sprouts with Pancetta and Bread Crumbs!
interesting things to dip in choc fondue?
figs (fresh or dried), pieces of angel food cake (or pound cake), graham strips (chocolate or honey-flavored), marshmallows
Asparagus Tonight, I've Got One Shot!
1) Roast 'em--break off ends, put on cookie sheet, sprinkle with good olive oil and kosher salt, roast at 400 degrees for 8 to 10 minutes.
2) Wrap roast asparagus spears with smoked salmon.
Trader Joes frozen fish fillets, your opinion?
I bought them once upon recommendation, and thought they were far inferior to fresh. Why not just buy their fresh fish?
What to do with lemons?
My neighbor just gave us a shopping back full of Meyer lemons from their tree. Any suggestions? Usually I make Ina Garten's Parmesan Chicken.
How do you use frozen fruit?
Yes, smoothies--I use it along with fresh fruit as the ice...
Messiest Food to Cook
Any time you are flouring a board with a child...as in the doggie treats I make with my daughter. PLUS: Thanksgiving turkey/trimmings.
Need appetizer help...drawing a blank
How about spanakopita--Ina Garten has a great recipe.
my favorite nut oils are leblanc
I use the pistachio oil over butter lettuce with warmed goat cheese, then I strew with pistachio meats and serve with a piece of crusty baguette. I use the hazelnut over game (or chicken) ravioli with toasted hazelnuts, chopped parsley and a bit of Parmesan (sometimes).
