Help ISO: Definitive MID PRICE - UNPRETENTIOUS - CASUAL - GREAT FOOD List?
Going on our annual Gotham Holiday quickie trip this weekend.
Window gazing Mid Town - Rock Center - Down Shopping.
With the economy still shaky, we'd are paring back our gastro budget a bit this year
So in the spirit of getting something for nothing ... ;)
We are looking for any restaurant recs that is mid-price (entrees $20-$35), unpretentious, warm ambiance with great food. Nothing too fussy or fine dining in style or atmosphere or loud (NYC being loud generally). In other words, your favorite everyday places in any of the following category - in any borough - lunch or dinner:
1) Italian
2) American
3) Asian
4) French
5) Mediterranean

As much as I love your idea & boldness, it would be too much food for just the 2 of us LOL!
Dim Sum Recs
Please use the search box top right.
This really has been talked about a billion time.
Just use the phrase "Best Dim Sum" & make sure you are searching in the Manhattan board!

So last year - wrote in this thread: http://chowhound.chow.com/topics/752313
that I was looking for Crispy Pig & got some wonderful recs & a good education on differences between:
Golden crispy skinned roast pig (boon fay sow = 1/2 fat 1/2 lean.)
vs.
Red skinned bbq Roast pork (cha siu)
But when we got to our destination of choice - Great NY Noodletown - it was out :(
So are the recommendations for Crispy Roast Pig the same this year or has some new establishment popped up?
First NYC visit freak out - going to Midtown; need help
Agreed. Thank you for the list! Outstanding info!
ISO: Chinese Restaurant serving best crispy roast pork?
Yes. Golden Crispy skin = Roast Pork boon fay sow = 1/2 fat 1/2 lean.
Just learnt that from all you folks today. :)
Waiting anxiously for your writing on roast pig.

Such artistry in epicurean ordering. Thank you!

2 days to go till my Gotham holiday including touristy to-do's & of course great food at all price points.
Hope 2 days is enough :)
Anyhow: Looking for recommendations on where I can get the best tasting Chinese crispy roast pork?
Anywhere from Central Park down to Chinatown would be preferred on the island - thanks.
Cancelling my Esca reservation - good idea?
Coming up to NYC this coming weekend.
Had a prime 800pm Esca reservation but after reading a bunch of reviews here - it seems Esca is all over the place.
In terms of quality & quantity.
Open Table even list it as a
Anyhow, any thoughts on if I should seek a different seafood place that can provide a more bountiful & good meal in the $25-50 range?

I luv these types of questions, no matter how it is phrased, it is still asking the same thing many natives & out-of-towners always wonder:
Where can I find good meal for $35/pp (fill in your own values here), in a casual dining setting that doesn't require me to dress up.
LOL Kudos OP!
Cupcake recommendations for Thanksgiving
Another vote for SSS.
Have to check out Chickalicious on this trip.
How are their prices vs. SSS?
I couldn't believe the prices (low!) that SSS was charging in NYC!
Another pleasant surprise in this economy.
Thanks.
Go-To Neighborhood Restaurants?
You all eat so well in your respective hoods! Luv it.
Go-To Neighborhood Restaurants?
loratliff - cheap is never a bad thing when it comes to prices!
& may I say your list is exactly the vibe I am looking for from the natives.
Thanks!
Getting engaged in NYC this winter. Need a cozy restaurant (not too fancy) to go afterwards!
I know, I may be harsh on them esp. since V-Day is so commercialized.

I am looking for a similar list for a different occasion - so thank you OP for the ideas!
My non-recommendation is Savoy.
I fell in love reading about the ambiance but the service & food was NOT true to the reviews.
On your important day, would you like to take a chance on them treating you better than the indifference they showed on Valentines day towards us & other guests.
Best wishes on your final choice.
Go-To Neighborhood Restaurants?
I make my semi-annual Manhattan visit for the holiday season the second weekend of December.
Last Dec09, we had an enjoyable meal at Luna Piena Ristorante - Midtown East.
However on Valentines night Feb09, our meal at Savoy in which the cozy fireplace & window seat couldn't compensate for the disappointing, cramped, snooty serviced & overpriced meal.
So my request is for some of your go-to restaurants where you locals go to get quality food in a relaxed atmosphere over & over.
I am following requirements:
OpenTable.com's Price rating of below up to $$$ = $31 to $50.
Seafood, american, modern american, fusion, italian, chinese, vietnamese, french.
Any neighborhood in Manhattan from the 80's on down.
Manhattan recs
Coming to town 2nd weekend of Dec. - Can I get away with a jacket & chords @ River Cafe (for man)?
Need a V-Day Recommendation in Northern VA
Sorry - Have never been! Looks nice. Thanks for the recommendation! ; )
Need a V-Day Recommendation in Northern VA
David - as I wrote in the other V-Day post today:
I will recommend some NoVa places that is inside the beltway (Alexandria): Del Merei & Carlyle Grand for American. Bastille & Fontaine Caffe Creperie for Euro.
Google reviews of them all & read up. YMMV.
Lets just say I've never had a bad meal @ any of them.
Simple Valentine's Day Dinner
Don't worry - this is DC (+area) - there are plenty of options even @ this late date.
I will recommend some NoVa places that is inside the beltway (Alexandria): Del Merei & Carlyle Grand for American. Bastille & Fontaine Caffe Creperie for Euro.
All are within your budget & simple fare casual fare (which I like too).
The foodies may disagree but thank allah we're not like them! LOL!
Good luck & best wishes with transportation.
ps - On a personal note I will say that V-Day is a very overrated cliche esp. @ a restaurant.
I went with a new gf (at the time) last year in NYC & the entire restaurant had couples sitting uncomfortably close to each other doing the same thing.
So try to think out of the box. Heck if they had a White Castle here I would take them up on their V-Day special event.
Chinese New Year Festival in Falls Church
Thanks. for the Eden info. Not a big fan of it even though I grew up here in NoVa.
But I guess it safer during the bright day time.
Will check both out.
Chinese New Year Festival in Falls Church
Do you have a link. Coming in from Richmond & am looking for a Viet festival to go to.
plus LJ is my alma mater. ;P
Is there a separate Viet Festival?

I found Luna Piena Ristorante this past weekend while desperately looking for a 10pm dinner reservation via CHOW HOUND on our annual weekend visit to Manhattan for the holiday season.
I thought it was terrific & the people friendly & attentive without being pushy.
The space was cute & there was a mix of party goers, families, & locals in addition to us out of towners.
It was exactly the type of restaturant we were looking for:
Good food.
Good portions.
Casual.
Good decor.
Good service.
Moderately priced.
Late night availability.
Known locally without being mom & pop-ish.
Overall 4 out 5 stars for us.

In Old Town - I would recommend Jackson 20 @ the Monaco hotel.
Dark & casually chic + walkable to the waterfront 5 minutes.
Dress is anything from semi to casuals.
FOOD IS REALLY GOOD & service is 5 stars @ 3 star prices.

with all due respect to DC cupcake fans, why are we paying so much for a dozen ($30+/12!!)?
I luv the NYC cupcakes esp from Sugar Sweet Sunshine on the LES - $18/12 too!
DC area cupcake proprietors need to wakeup & realize this is a 2nd rate cupcake city charging 1st rate prices. Geesh!
Citronelle on the cheap?
What is an 3 course meal + bottle of wine average meal @ Citronelle going to run?
I have a birthday party being held there & I want to budget accordingly.
