Jersey Shore Homemade Ice Cream?

The original post was over a year ago but we just experienced the record breaking heat and ice-cream is definitely a nice thought. Then, News 12 showed a place called Cowabunga Ice Cream, I was so drawn to the Red Velvet Cake Frozen Yogurt and my husband seemed to be very interested too. Besides, they talked about designer ice cream and I was so curious, we are not talking about NYC, Milan, London, Paris...but Forked River and designer ice cream??? I decided to take a drive to Forked River, technically, I think it can still be considered as Jersey Shore despite it is not directly touching the Atlantic Ocean. The store is simple and clean, the lady behind the counter(her name is Mary) is very friendly and helpful. Anyway, I love frozen yogurt and ice cream, nothing is more fun than to try out the favors; therefore I ordered 3 scoops of frozen yogurt and three scoops of ice cream. Of course, I got the Red Velvet Cake, and the other two yogurt were Strawberry and the Peanut butter; the Red Velvet Cake was really creamy and just so good! Strawberry was light and refreshing, the texture of the Peanut Butter was a bit different and it was good too but I prefer the first two. As for the ice cream, they were as good. I had the Death by Chocolate, Mint Chocolate Chip and the Expresso Coffee, I am crazy about Mint Chocolate Chip and it is my favorite ice cream but the Expresso Coffee was really good, especially when you bite into the chocolate covered coffee bean when you were enjoying the creamy ice cream...really a piece of heaven. The Mint Chocolate Chips were very refreshing and not as sweet as some other mint ice cream but I could taste the favor much more, just wonderful for the summer. I know that I really should not have eaten all of the goodies there but I really wanted to sample them first(honestly, I did not expect to be able to finish all 6 scoops but they were just that good), besides, I got Chocolate Cake and Smore Cake from Flakey Tart at home, so I did not plan to buy a whole quart yesterday. After having those ice-cream and frozen yogurt, I have to agree that they are definitely not ordinary ice cream or frozen yogurt, quite the Vera Wang for Bridal gowns.

The Cheese Cave, Red Bank

Do you mean Fran's chocolates from WA? I love that place ever since my best friend who lives in Seattle introduced that to me! If it is really Fran's that I am talking about, how is the selection? I was going to take a trip just for the burrata but I guess, but this will definitely give me another reason. BTW, anyone knows if I can reserve the burrata? I just do not want to drive over there and found out that they are all gone....

good burgers and beers in toms river?

Artisan's Brewery & Italian Grill can be an option. They have their own brewery, check it out. Some of my friends like the "Red", which is a seasonal beer they make and I think that you can get it now. The bar food is quite typical but if you are there on weekdays, there are free snacks(sandwiches and pasta) and happy hours!

Daniel's Bistro, Point Pleasant Beach NJ

It had been a few months since we were in Daniel's(to avoid all the summer crowd) and we were back a few days ago. Karen is always pleasant and the staff are wonderful. We were served with a small shrimp/lobster soup, something on the house. It was very flavorful and I wish that it was on the menu. My husband had the duck meat balls as a starter and he enjoyed every bite of that; I started with one of their specials, it was grilled shrimp, with cheese and bacon wrapped around them. How can you ever go wrong with cheese and bacon? It was actually smart to have the shrimps, the favors incorporated very well. We went with our personal favorites for the main courses, I had the sea scallops while Mr B went with his beloved lamb chops. I believe I had mentioned about those dishes in an earlier comment, thus I am not going to repeat myself, the dishes are just wonderful. We shared a ricotta cheese cake to top off our meal, lighter than regular cheese cake but very satisfying!

Anyone tried Copper Canyon in Atlantic Highlands lately?

Thanks MichelleM131, margaritas sounds great! It seems like you had a good experience, unlike some of the other posts on the board. I guess, maybe going on a weekday is a better choice.

My husband saw something on TV about the place and we are thinking to try it out. I read some of the postings on the board and they were quite mixed and dated. Anyone has recent experience with this place?

D'Jeet - The Grove in Shrewsbury

Got a sandwich on to go last Friday. I previously got lunch here but was not particularly impressed, yet I was picking up some cards right next door, so I figured that I would give it another try. Glad I did! The girls behind the counter were very helpful and fun....the choices were quite limited and I picked something that they said was new on the menu. It was a ham sandwich top with fried eggs. The ham was very tasty and the pieces of white bread(not sure if they are really plain white bread or that they could be brioche), they were thick and delicious. The girls behind the counter were all checking out my sandwich since they said that it is a new item and they had not seen it before. BTW, they are also open for brunch on Sundays!

Whispers Spring Lake

Was there for a friend's bridal shower. Both food and service were good. It was a preset menu and I had the sea bass with some pak choy, very nice. Most of the girls chose the sea bass while a few had the veal(looked good too but I did not taste it) The pasta was good according to another girl friend. I would say that it is a bit above average for the quality of the food but I did not know the price...so I am not sure if it was worth the money! If you are in the shore area, I highly recommend Daniel's Bistro in Point Pleasant!

shanghai bun, matawan nj // gross ANY decent dumpling places in Central Jersey?

BigBlue120, I believe the place you heard about was Bando. It was on Route 35.(south on Route 35 compared to Crown Palace) Bando served the soup dumplings and noodles, they were run by Taiwanese. The food was good but it is no longer in business. Some chowhounders said that it was being renovated last Fall but it never re-opened and I passed the place a after the second snow storm and the parking lot was not cleared. Another Chowhounder advised that there was a "For Rent" sign outside the place....

Five Guys Burgers

njfoodies,

I work in Shrewsbury and I know the Five Guys you talked about, I think it is considered geographically in Shrewsbury. Anyway, I agree that it is a decent burger but I am not particular impressed and I will not go out of my way to get it at all! The only reason I was there the other time was my colleague wanted to try it out when it first opened. All I could remember was we waited for a long time for the burgers!!!!

Tried the beef sandwich, it was great! The order came with two pancakes, each was sliced opened with the beef inside. The pancakes(as they called) has sesame on them, crispy and with the aroma of the sesame! The beef is actually marinated with some sauce and cilantro. The waitress said that if cilantro was not preferred, they could take them out too. To me, the favor was excellent and they did not really stuffed me, unlike having a real beef sandwich!

Taste test,

I passed the place earlier and as you said, the parking lot has been cleared but there were no cars there. I tried calling and the phone kept ringing, there was not even a message. I really wonder if the place will not be back for business!

JerzeyShore,

You are right on about the part that once you spotted the place, you might have already passed and it is really a pain to turn around....

Crown Palace is nicely located right next to the Asian supermarket and makes it easier to shop and eat in one location!

Where can I find soup pork dumplings(xiao lung bao) in Monmouth/Ocean County?

bgut1,

Thanks! Wish there were...but for the time being, I will just have to satisfy my craving for these soup pork dumplings by visiting Shanghai Bun, if I do not want to drive too much!

Taste test,

Good suggestions!(though they are not in Monmouth or Ocean county) I was actually able to sample Grand Shanghai. Got a client in Edison and we were meeting up for lunch today, so I just picked Grand Shanghai. The soup dumplings were really good, we tried the scallion pancake and have some noodles too. The place was quite crowded for lunch and plenty of parking! Thanks for the recommendation and I will have to try Shanghai Park some other time!

Eastern Empire Lincroft

Took another chowhounder – Cantkick’s recommendation and tried Eastern Empire(Manow’s previous location). The seating area is the same as before, the waitress was quick to greet me took me to my seat. The lunch menu was quite typical, the usual Chinese food that you can get, comes with soup or soda or egg roll, for the price of $5.5. There are also a few Thai specials and they were $6. Tea and ice water were put on the table as soon as I sat down. I had the not so exciting chicken with broccoli and hot and sour soup, simple dish and soup but they can tell the quality of the place. The hot and sour soup was decent; chicken with broccoli was flavorful. The source was tasty, not as thick(corn starchy) as some other places. I ordered white rice instead of the pork fried rice but when my waitress brought the dish to me, it was with pork fried rice, she apologized for the chef and told me that she would get me the white rice on the side. I declined the offer since I would not be able to eat all that, besides, the pork fried rice looked pretty good to me(non greasy). I am actually glad that the chef made the mistake, the pork fried rice was good, very hot and the pieces of pork(BBQ pork) were very juicy. Other than the fortune cookies, oranges were also offered, which was a nice touch.

I am happy with my lunch, service and food were both good. If I really have to pick on something, it would be the little kid running around the dining area. I believe he is the owner’s child and both parents are working so he is running around in the restaurant. There were four other tables while I was there, other customers seem to enjoy their dishes too. I will have to come back and try their dinner menu some other time.

I enjoy the soup pork dumplings in Shanghai Bun(in Matawan) and Baido(Middletown) but the later one seemed to be closed, can anyone tell me where else I can go to have those delicious dumplings? Thank you in advance!

crowne palace, middltwn or marlboro?

I had tried their dim sum in the weekends, they were not great and cannot really compared to places further north/Chinatown/Flushing, of course, definitely cannot compare that to dim sum I had in Hong Kong or China. On the other hand, it is one of the few places in Monmouth/Ocean county that offers dim sum. I planned to go to Bando for lunch today but the place seemed to be closed, so I headed to Crown Palace. I ordered a lunch special, it came with soup and I requested the server to give me the Chinese soup instead of the wanton/egg drop/hot and sour. The Chinese soup is really good, it was with various types of carrots and vegetables, tasted wonderful to me. I had the beef with flat noodles and sauce. The beef was tasty with the Chinese leafy vegetable(called choy sum), mushrooms and carrots. Great flavor and the sauce was good too! The lunch was $4.95 and it was 100 times better than getting Chinese takeout, which cost me the same or more…well I did not have the fortune cookie here!(I do not really care for that anyway!) By the way, my waiter was very nice and polite! Excellent service! If you ever consider having a Chinese takeout, this is a much better choice! I cannot say about their dinner since I have not eaten their dishes but for what I got today, it was a great deal!

I passed by the place earlier today and it seemed to be closed. Snow was all over the parking lot and the whole driveway was covered with snow. Despite we have some flurries today, the way it looked, the parking lot definitely has not been cleared for sometime. I know that Chinese New Year was on Valentine's Day, maybe they closed the restuarant for Chinese New Year? Can someone give me a clue??? I just hope that it is not closed down!

Help finding GOOD FOOD in ocean/monmouth

I second Daniel's Bistro IN PP! Trinity(Keyport) is another great place! If you are into Japanese food, my favorite is Nobi in Toms River. I do not consider Nobi as a higher end with cutting edge but it is great food! Check out the reviews on the broad for these places.

shanghai bun, matawan nj // gross ANY decent dumpling places in Central Jersey?

Read about Shanghai Bun on this broad for a while and decided to try it today. The place was kind of between a takeout and a restaurant. I am not particularly impressed by the decoration or lack of it. I remember people on this broad mentioned how bad the decoration was years ago and now the place had been renovated. As for its cleanliness, it was relatively clean/acceptable to me(at least from what I could see). The waitress was polite and I asked for the soup pork buns and I ordered Shanghai Wantons too! I thought that the soup pork buns were an appetizer, I should have read the menu more carefully, there were 8 of them!

Both dishes taste very authentic. The soup pork buns(siao lung bao) were very well made, the wrappings were thin and the soup inside was hot! Definitely dip the buns in the ginger vinegar sauce. If you can stand the steaming heat, eat the bun in one bite. I was told by a friend from Shanghai, that is the way to enjoy the goodness of this dish. The Shanghai Wanton(dumplings with vegetable and pork) in soup, there were some vegetables and seaweed in the soup too. The dumplings were excellent, they are nothing like the dumplings from the Chinese takeout. The wrappers were thin and basically transparent, the ingredients were really fresh. During the time I was there, excluding me, there were two families but there were a few people stopped by for the takeout. The waitress told me that most of their customers are Chinese but with an increasing number of non Chinese these days.

This is not a place you go for the ambience or the service; but if you care for some soup dumplings or wantons, do consider.

I would go for Chicken marsala and francese, a bit diversification. It is good that you picked the eggplant since some of the guests may not eat meat...

I do not think that it is going to fold! I work in the area and they are packed during lunch, plus lots of people are getting take out! It is the favorite Japanese place for many of my colleagues!
