Food and restaurant jokes.
A Girl Potato and Boy Potato had eyes for each other,
And finally they got married, and had a little sweet
potato, which they
Called
'Yam.'
Of course, they wanted the best for Yam.
When it was time, they told her about the facts
of life.
They warned her about going out
and getting half-baked, so she wouldn't get accidentally mashed, and
get a bad name for herself like 'Hot Potato,' and
end up with a bunch of
Tater
Tots
Yam said not to worry, no Spud would get
her into the sack and Make a rotten potato out of her!
But on the other hand she
Wouldn't stay home
and become a Couch Potato either.
She would get
Plenty of exercise so as not to be skinny like her
Shoestring
Cousins.
When she went off to
Europe, Mr. And Mrs. Potato told Yam
To watch out
for the hard-boiled guys from Ireland .
And the
Greasy guys from France called the French Fries. And
when she went out West,
To
watch out for the Indians so she wouldn't get scalloped.
Yam said she would stay on the straight and
narrow
And
wouldn't
associate
with
those high class Yukon Golds, or the ones from the other
Side of the tracks who advertise their trade on all
the trucks that say,
'Frito Lay.'
Mr. And
Mrs. Potato sent Yam to Idaho P.U. (that's
Potato
University ) so that when she graduated she'd really
Be
in the Chips.
But in spite of all they did for
her, one-day Yam came home
And announced she was
going to marry Tom Brokaw.
Tom Brokaw!
Mr And
Mrs.
Potato were very upset.
They
told
Yam she couldn't
possibly
Marry
Tom Brokaw
Because he's just.......
Are you
ready for this?
Are
you sure?

Cooking for one.
Judith Jones of Julia Child fame, has a book coming out in a couple of weeks that looks interesting. "The Pleasures of Cooking for One"

A 1991 radio interview with Julia Child
A delightful interview. Julia's personality really comes through. I wish I had known her.

Help identify the name of this Italian tomato water recipe
Would it be something as simple as "tomato juice"? succo di pomodoro
What is your favorite new item of cookware this year?
It's great isn't it? I have much the same called "BeaterBlade" Same Idea. I also got the pasta roller set and I'm as happy as a pig in a puddle.

What is a "food snob"?
Quite so, but I think it would apply to mindless trend followers as well. Oscar Wilde was pretty clever for a man :-)
What is a "food snob"?
Reminds me of a saying..."He knows the price of everything and the value of nothing"
Happy Birthday Julia
Today is Julia's birthday and I would like to honour her with a great meal but I'm afraid it's too damn hot and humid for that. Sorry Julia, wherever you are.
Just some home-pasta and some marinara I've had in the freezer and a simple salad.
How about you guys? Gonna cook?

Julie and Julia Review-NYT
For those of you that would like a more "Julia" version, there is a DVD documentary of her called "An Appetite for Life".
Netfix has it for rent.
The ISBN is ISBN 0767082141
If you google appetite for life dvd, you will get some hits.
I have the DVD and it is wonderful.
Don't ask me where I got it.......(My daughter is a pirate) :-)
September 2009 COTM: Suggestions please!
I don't know if this is allowed, but since no one is interested in a baking book this month I would like to change my vote to a strong second choice. SOUTHERN MONTH Y'ALL :-)
A run on Julia Child's book
I read this article and did a quick search. The following booksellers are sold out of MtAoFC

Julie and Julia Review-NYT
I have to amend my comments a bit. I just read a review of the movie in Gourmet mag. Link below...
It is the most critical of Julie I have seen. However, some of the comments have made me stop and back up a bit.
Julie was only trying to do something constructive in her life, not ride on Julia's coat tails. That is what happened, of course, but it was not the intent.
Sorry, Julie, I was being harsh because I adore Julia Child and felt like you were taking advantage of her. I was wrong.

Julie and Julia Review-NYT
Julia Child will be remembered for a very long time and her kitchen is in the Smithsonian. Julie whats-her-name will be forgotten in a year or less.

September 2009 COTM: Suggestions please!
If you swore you wouldn't buy anymore cookbooks, you should stick to it. Be like me. I swore no more too, so this month only bought 5.
It's a start :-)

September 2009 COTM: Suggestions please!
Because of the recent movie, something by Julia Child would be nice, but I know she was the focus of an earlier COTM.
However, as near as I can tell there has not been much in the way of baking as COTM, so I suggest BAKING WITH JULIA.
Best and Worst Cooking Shows
The Surreal Gourmet or something like that. You are right. Unwatchable. Even worse is one called "What's for Dinner" ....Just awful.
Michael Pollan on Julia Child
Nice article. I was taken by one quote which reminded me of another.
"Women in that period had been brainwashed by the food industry," says Jones. "It was considered demeaning for women to cook. They [the food industry] wanted them to buy their products."
A spokesman for a major food producer. Swanson's or the like said this once in a lecture.
"200 years ago everybody made their own clothes. Now nobody makes their own clothes except as a hobby. In 50 years nobody will cook except as a hobby."
I think he is wrong. All the hype surrounding this movie will bring Julia Child into the younger person's mind. I predict the sales of Julia"s book "Mastering the Art of French Cooking" will go through the roof.
I hope I'm right.
