Citric acid source?

Where can I find citric acid in Manhattan?

My first organic Thanksgiving

You can also make your own sausage (patties), which you can do in advance and freeze. That way you know the herbs and spices (since you listed 'em) will be organic. Keep a price list and let us know how much it runs you! I just got sticker shock from the Lobel's $75 10-person turkey. Yikes!

Olympic celebration in Chinatown?

I and a few friends are looking to have a Chinese food banquet in Manhattan or Flushing (I lived in China and love good Chinese food) while watching the opening ceremonies of the Olympics tomorrow night. Any suggestions?

Guilin and Hunan Province Recommendations, Please

Those Xian sandwiches -- I'm obsessed. There's a place in New York that's not really similar at all, but the closest thing I can find, called Province. (Just written up in NYTimes.)

How to make them?

Kebab Cafe in Astoria= disgusting

Agreed! Not worthwhile, and expensive. It's definitely about the ambience, Ali's personality, and the illusion of intimacy. (No one gets menus, and Ali is charming and friendly with almost everyone.)

I like some of the hookah places. After I went to Kebab Cafe, I met up with some friends at a hookah place on Steinway between 25th and 28th (sorry, can't remember the name). It's the one with the pirate out front, closer to 28th. The food was awesome, plentiful, and inexpensive. One (obvious) caveat -- it's really smoky inside, since it's a hookah bar.

Graham flour buying?

I'd like to make my own graham crackers. Does anyone know where I can buy graham flour, preferable downtown or on the East side?

Xi'an style Chinese sandwiches?-

I just had a sandwich at Province on Church at Walker, and was disappointed. I'm remembering streetfood sandwiches in Xian with grilled bread and loose spiced meat with toppings. They were so good! Any idea where I can get them in New York? (Flushing's fine too.)

Best Chicago-style bagels?

Hmm, maybe Arnie's just did their own style. They used to be about twice the size of a NY bagel with just a hint of a hole. I also don't think they were boiled first.

In any case, thanks for the New York Bialy and Bagel!

Best Chicago-style bagels?

Actually, I was thinking of Arnie's on North Avenue, apparently now called NY Bagels, or something like that.

They're huge, very doughy and bready, soft, not chewy, and completely encrusted with whatever flavoring you get. Not exactly my cup of tea, but some people swear by them.

Best Chicago-style bagels?

I'm looking for Chicago style -- not NY style in Chicago -- bagels, like Arnie's. Anyone know of a place you can still get these doughy monsters?

Durian pastries...

Has anyone seen these in Manhattan (or Brooklyn or Queens?)

LOVE the liu lian...

Eating in Chinatown -- a beginner's guide

Hey - what about durian pastries? I'm salivating remembering the flaky dough surrounding stinky durian inside I ate at Chinese banquets. Anywhere you can think of?

Best Soup in New York

There's a place, Soup Spot, on 31st between 7th and 8th (facing MSG, near Penn Station.) This place is only open for lunch, but they do it right! Try Thai coconut curry chicken soup, jambalaya, any bisque... Really, I've never had a bad soup there!
