Heading to LA last minute - in dire need of Fried Chicken!

It doesn't seem like anyone has mentioned Golden Bird yet... I just found out about this local franchise recently and the one I went to in Inglewood has fabulously juicy fried chicken with the crispiest skin ever for a really good price! The Inglewood location has a huge wall of sodas too from all over the world. Random, but awesome...

I have some pictures of the place on Flickr:

MAY is National Burger Month(?): any suggestions (current please)?

I don't think anyone mentioned The Habit which started out in SB and now has locations in Torrance and El Segundo. Probably the best, freshest, cleanest fast food style burger around and the onion rings and malts can't be missed. Go to the El Segundo one and chill outside with your friends while you enjoy your feast.

And if it's late-night, D-town Burger Bar serves up some satisfying burgers and fries (they sneak in some sweet potato fries in the mix). Here's a link to my pic: http://www.flickr.com/photos/wise-pix/4570385312/in/set-72157623972997652/

Best Rib Tips in LA?

Thanks! I went to R & R a long time ago and loved it, but then forgot the name of the restaurant and recently looked it up. I didn't see rib tips on their menu, but that would explain it since it's now a special. I will be heading there on a Tuesday!

Best Glass Mixing Bowls?

In that case, that's pretty scary. I've always used Pyrex or Corningware (also made from glass even though it doesn't look like it) for baking in the past... but now I'm not so sure I want to. :)

Local, pastured, humanely-raised eggs, chicken and milk

I have asked if they really do roam around and they said yes, although we do have take the farmer's word for it... we can never really know what their vision of "roaming" is. All I know is that their chicken meat looks like chicken should (not crazy huge and plump, but smaller and lean). Their eggs are the creamiest I have tastest since my aunt's chicken eggs in France (that she raises on veggie scraps!) Also, I had to buy some eggs and couldn't go to the Torrance FM, so settled for the eggs at my local Mar Vista Market and the sizes of the eggs were very inconsistent, some were large, some were tiny which makes baking an issue.... but La Bahn's eggs are very consistent in size which is another plus for me.

Best Glass Mixing Bowls?

Thanks for the tips everyone. I actually returned my chippy bowls to Williams Sonoma, and got two large glass bowls individually at Sur La Table since these sizes don't come in the set. They are having a sale right now where practically everything is at least 20% off so I was able to get them both at a good price and I really only needed the larger sizes anyways, since I had no use for those tiny prep bowls (I already have some old pyrex ones that are in tip top shape from the 80s!)

About the Pyrex heating question... they are able to be used in the oven, but you have to be careful with them. I read the instructions for the first time and there are a lot of situations in which the glass can break... namely taking something out of the oven and putting the glass on something cold (i.e. the counter) or the opposite of a colder bowl/dish being put into the hot oven as in Flourgirl's case. Basically, any drastic temperature change is risky for glass cookingware.

Best Glass Mixing Bowls?

I also have a set of metal bowls that I love for use with the hand mixer and more rugged use, but I really use the glass bowls for a variety of things-serving dishes, and mixing things by hand mostly. I might try the Sur La Table bowls since they come in such a variety of sizes as did the WS bowls and if that fails I can always "borrow" my brothers' set of Pyrex bowls since he doesn't really use them. I just wasn't sure about their quality, since the WS already shocked me with their fragility, but since you've had them for so long and haven't had an issue, I'm going to give them a try. They're on sale right now online too! ;)

Best Microbrew in South Bay or nearby area?

The Bruery in Placentia is a really fun and unique experience. They don't serve food, but it's a great gathering every Friday-Sunday in their factory... so not only do you get to taste great beers and even take some home in bottles if you like, but you get to do it surrounded by all the barrels, vats, and equipment used to actually make the stuff.

Best Glass Mixing Bowls?

My friend used to work at Crate and Barrel and I still have one of those bowls in my house that she left behind and it's fantastic! But that was years ago, and when I went online last night, the style has changed--so probably the quality has too unfortunately.

Best Glass Mixing Bowls?

Thanks, I'm glad I kept the box. I had originally purchased them early last year but didn't open them until just last month, so I'm going to just go in sans receipt and say I got them as a gift. Too bad everything in there is so expensive, so I can probably only exchange them for a spoon or something :)

As for the Pyrex, I was considering them since Pyrex never fails, just like Corningware which I love. And the lids make them even handier.

Best Farmers Markets!

I agree, the Hollywood FM has too much. I like to look at all the vendors before I buy so I can compare price and quality of the goods, but you just can't do that here. I don't think the human brain can process all that you see here. I usually stay in my area and bike to the Mar Vista market when I feel like keeping it cozy and the Torrance market for more variety and my favorite egg/chicken vendor La Bahn farms.

Best Glass Mixing Bowls?

I got these beautiful bowls from Williams Sonoma but they chip like crazy after just a few weeks of use and I even ate some of the chipped glass not knowing one of the smaller bowls that nests inside had chipped into the bowl I was eating from! I really want some quality/reliable bowls that will last longer than just a few weeks.

Thanks!

Best Farmers Markets!

DU, Would you say that the Torrance market is pricier than Wed SM? I go to the Torrance one pretty regularly and don't think it is as expensive as the SM one, but it's been a long time since I've gone to the SM market.

Where to find frozen/fresh Ramen Noodles?

I saw this on another post from a related topic
"you can buy fresh, handmade soba noodles at ichimi-an on pch.
i'm pretty sure the ramen-ya of your choice would be happy to oblige."

I have heard great things about this restaurant--it's in the almost Palos Verdes portion of Torrance and they handmake their noodles there so most likely they might sell you some if you want to make the trek.

Best Rib Tips in LA?

I just checked out their menu and it's cheap! I live pretty close actually and thought this place looked too ghetto, but sometime too ghetto is good! I will be checking this place out soon too... thanks!

Best Rib Tips in LA?

I have heard really great things about Bludso's so I will have to give it a try. It was nightime, raining, and didn't feel like venturing out to Compton, but will give definitely check them out soon!

Best Rib Tips in LA?

I'm looking for some soft, fall off the bone, rib tips... with cartilage you can actually eat from all that slow cooking! Every place I've tried so far has been dry and too hard to chew... ;( I will be forever grateful if you can point me in the right direction.

Any suggestions for mellow NYE dinner/hangout in LA, OC or anywhere in between?

Under $50, but no worries... think I'm just going to order in and hang out at home with some friends.

Any suggestions for mellow NYE dinner/hangout in LA, OC or anywhere in between?

I'm looking to spend a chill NYE evening with some friends and am looking for a nice place to grab some food and just hang out until the clock strikes midnight. I'm also looking for something affordable since NYE prices can be outrageous. Any ideas?

Best Apple Pie in Oak Glen?

Yeah, I'm looking for one that's crazy full of apples and not too sweet. I heard Los Rios has a three pounder... The pie my brother bought was so yummy because they added very little if any sugar so you could really appreciate the apples. Hopefully I can find one that's not overly sweet in Oak Glen.

Best Apple Pie in Oak Glen?

Thanks, I'll be passing through tomorrow, so I shouldn't have too many lines to deal with. I'll have to make a huge pie comparison between Laws and Parrish. My brother recently bought us a HUGE apple pie from orchards in N. California so I'm looking for one like that to bring to relatives in Arizona, where there are no apples :( Hopefully I can find a pie that fits the bill.

Best Apple Pie in Oak Glen?

Thanks so much! I wanted to stay away from the generic super touristy places if possible--so I figured an insider tip would be best. I will definitely check it out and unpasteurised cider? I'll be bringing a BIG cooler for that one.

Best Apple Pie in Oak Glen?

I'm heading to Phoenix next week and realized there's apple orchards pretty much along the way. Does anyone know of which place has the best apple pie? I'm looking for a BIG one with lots of apples and tastes like home!

Purveyors of great vinegar

Thanks for the tip on Epicure... I just read a Yelp review on the public sale days and it sounds like a lot of fun--cheese and pate sampling, gourmet wines, etc. And if I can buy a whole gallon of vinegar, that will make me happy for pretty much the whole year! I'll have to give them a call and see when their next sale will be.

Any of you "Animal" fans ever try the Crispy Pig Ear with Chili, Lime and a Fried Egg?

People are actually eating pig ears! This was my favorite dish as a kid (although my dad used to stew them with pimentos and tomato sauce). I was always the odd one out for liking them, but it's good to see that they are being implemented in such an interesting fashion. I must go and try this out since I especially like the flavor combo of chile/lime.

Looking for Dried California Apricots

I'm really surprised that they did not have CA apricots at Whole Foods! You can definitely get them at Trader Joe's and they even have the non-sulfured ones if you want to eat them with a more natural flavor. Also, check out any farmer's markets in the area... there's usually one dried fruit/nut vendor. Hollywood Farmer's Market is massive, so they should have one.

Purveyors of great vinegar

I'm not a fan of Vilux. I find their vinegars to have a very diluted taste to them. I really miss the homemade vinegar my aunt gave me while I was in France. Oddly enough, the closest thing I've found is Trader Joe's red wine vinegar. Too bad that bottle is just so small!

First Peak: New England Style Seafood Shack Finally Available in LA: BP Oysterette in Santa Monica

Thanks for the tip, Jerome.... I will have to check those two out. I'm always looking for reasonable fresh fish (which is often hard to find!)

Need affordable dinner spot - SOMA/Downtown Thursday night

I recently had lunch at Basil Thai on Folsom and had a great experience. It was for a wedding reception so we had a lot of diiferent dishes and all were very well prepared. Would work equally well for dinner since they have a full bar and really interesting cocktails. It's updated Thai, almost bistro style and it looks like they have an even more gourmet version of the original just down the street. The dishes at Basil Canteen look phenomenal for Thai food. Here's a link to their site: http://www.basilthai.com/
Let me know what you think of Canteen if you end up eating there!
