Supermarket woes

Looking for a great price on Better Than Bullion? Look no further than Costco. As is the Costco way, the container sizes are larger too.

Where can I get Hutterite chickens in Calgary or area??

Co-Op often has them. DJ's Market (not sure if they have closed yet for the season) has frozen hutterite chickens.

2 Hour Turkey???

If the presentation of a whole bird at the table is not an issue then I have found the best way to roast a turkey is by butterflying it. You won't have a dry bird. Also this way a 20 lb turkey can be roasted in 2+ hours.

Five Guys vs. FAT Burger?

So so on both. Slight edge to Five Guys. Rocky's Burger Bus has nothing to worry about. Drag that darn bus down to Deerfoot Meadows and we'll see who wins.

Groupons- good or bad for businesses? [moved from Prairie Provinces board]

There is no way a business knows what a Groupon actually costs them since they don't know how many will eventually be sold. They may know their COGS but not the absolute number that they will have to redeem. Reading on the web there is definitely an issue where restaurant servers do not get paid grats on the pre-discounted amounts. Good to hear that restaurants are showing customers the pre-discounted amount. It can't hurt.

Groupons- good or bad for businesses? [moved from Prairie Provinces board]

At least if you run an ad you know what it is going to cost you. It is defined. With Groupon you are exposed as a business. What you just have to hope is that some of the coupon holders will become regulars and not just looking for the next great special. Just as important is remember the servers. The coupon holder determines what they will or will not tip. An ad in a magazine doesn't cost them lost grats.

Groupons- good or bad for businesses? [moved from Prairie Provinces board]

Groupon campaigns can be so successful that they are crippling to a business. It can often be a good deal for the consumer but the business owner has to understand the math behind the promotions. This article shows what happens when a Groupon campaign is too successful.

ISO Wire Cookie Cooling Rack in YYC

Real Canadian Warehouse Club. There are two locations in Calgary. They cater primarily to restaurants and businesses. They carry a lot of restaurant supplies. Good prices too. Note though that they only take cash and debit.

If you want a fun experience try BJ Restaurant Supply on Centre St. N. This place is chock-a-block with restaurant supply equipment. Fantastic prices. Their business targets the asian restaurants in the city. Fun place to poke around. You will find some interesting stuff for sure.

Cruffs - House of Cream Puffs

Filling still squirts out of the end. Maybe by design so it can be pumped into the puff.

Cruffs - House of Cream Puffs

Dropped into Cruffs the other day. They have been open for a short while now. You select from a menu of different flavored creams and from a stainless steel container (resembles the ketchup dispensers at the Saddledome) they push the cream into the puff. I tried the vanilla cream. Flavor was very nice. I think it was $2.75 for a cream puff. Keep in mind that these aren't the large puffs from your childhood.

Crispy Crust Pizza - Woodbine

Located on Woodbine Blvd (in the 7-11 strip mall) Crispy Crust is a must try. Owned by an energetic young man, this place makes great pizza. The name says it all. This is another locally owned business that deserves some attention.

Chopsticks Sushi...Not sure they want me as a customer anymore

I agree with howlin. To me it sounds like she is treating you like a person she knows and this is her way of trying to be friendly and engaging. The accent can often sound harsh. I would assume she is making an effort to recognize you as a regular customer.

lunch in banff

I agree with piano boy. If it is a nice day take a drive along the aux Highway 1A (between Banff and Lake Louise). Take exit to Johnson Canyon to access 1A. There are some beautiful picnic table stops along the way that over look the river. So beautiful.

Calgary: Restaurant or Venue that can seat and feed 140 people?

Rush would be a piece of cake. At Rush with a budget of $8,000 for 140 people a piece of cake is probably all they would get.

Boxwood (Calgary)

Just hate it when you make a point of going to a restaurant and you see the "closed for private function" sign. Its one thing to not get in because the place is full but to close it off to the public just irks me. I know they have a business to run and buyouts are very good business but it just causes me pause to try again.

Brava Bistro Disappoints

To just pick off the cheese and return your original dish to you is very unfortunate. To risk offending a diner for the cost of a few shrimp is unbelievable. Diners have a lot of choices in Calgary. One bad experience like this can cause a restaurant valuable business. More importantly, it damages their reputation which is the hardest thing to build and maintain.

On the topic of Costco beef, does anyone know how long Costco ages their beef? While I haven't tried their Prime, I have found their AAA to be a bit tough at times.

Does any local Chowhound know where restaurants in Calgary source their fresh herbs (basil, mint, etc.). Are there any commercial greenhouses in the area that sell wholesale? Thanks.

Voya, Vancouver

As I am writing this I am staying at the Loden Hotel. The hotel by the way is wonderful. I dined at Voya last night. The prices are fairly reasonable. The menu is not large by any means. Great choices. I had the octopus appetizer. Very flavourful with a wonderful use of lentils as an accompaniment. The duck main course is highly recommended. The place was fairly quiet. A group of 12 would surely make an impact on the energy of the place. The restaurant is not very large. The 12 of you would fill the lounge area.

Calgary - where to find springrolls

Check out Chuen May Dim Sum on 1st Street SE (west of the Harry Hayes Building). They have frozen spring rolls by the bag as well as other steamable dim sum that would be ideal for a party. While there pick up a sub next door at Thi Thi. Reward yourself for finding the spring rolls.
