Kosher Boston Trip

Visiting Boston is good fun but it is not much of a Kosher Chow destination. I spent last week in Boston and did the kosher rounds: Rubin's is adequate but it has not aged well over the yeas; Ta'am China is unexeptional (how I miss Ruth's Kitchen!); Eilat Cafe? well, they try but I'd avoid the pizza and the pannini and nothing else seemed too exciting. I didn't go to Rami's but I have some fond recollections. Milk Street Cafe is good but has limited hours. I am returning next month and am tempted to try the JP Licks in Jamaica Plain, which has been reported to have nice brunch food. I understand that there are some good bakeries in Newton. Kupels in Brookline is useful but somewhat hit or miss.

Soom Soom

While I tend to post on new establishments or on places that are new to me, I realized that I have been remiss in not commenting upon the kosher restaurant that I frequent the most – Soom Soom on Lex. and 55th. If you are looking for a falafel joint in NY you cannot do better than Soom Soom. The falafel balls themselves are fresh, non-greasy, and flavorful. They offer a wide range of salad topping that you can add to your heart’s content – items such as quinoa, artichoke, stuffed grape leaves, zucchini, sweet potato, grilled eggplant and beets – in addition to more common offerings. Sauces include amba, Turkish salad, green sauce and schug. They have a few different sandwiches, including a tasty green omelet. It is clean and efficient. Not much in the way of seating. I am happy to report that it attracts a varied lunch crowd. I’ve never been to the 72nd street location. Writing this has given me a falafel craving.

Hong Kong - Kowloon or mid-level (Ohel Leah)?

I can't comment on Mul Yam but I found Ohel Leah very servicable for Shabbat - though their best is to be found at their Sunday night dinner buffet. This would also me my choice for a business meal. Shuva Israel was very convenient to where I was staying so I did have a number of meals there too - which were adequate (utilitarian, not Chowish, if you don't mind being amidst a crowd of backpackers - not for business meals.

Brunch in Boston - J.P.Licks, Boston's secret restaruant

Can anyone confirm whether brunch food is still served at the Jamaica Plain branch? Kind thanks.

Stab in the dark--any kosher for Pesach takeout in Livingston/Oranges area?

I had heard that the Shoprite in Livingston has KP takeout.

Anyone tried Ladino Tapas Grill Yet?

Fleishig, with several fish and vegetarian items on the menu.

Anyone tried Ladino Tapas Grill Yet?

Kosher tapas? Of course I have been there already. It is not yet fully operational, e.g., some items on the menu are not yet available and the complete wine list and full bar will be available after Pesach. That said, based on my experience, Ladino has some really good potential. I sampled three tapas: tuna ceviche, a potato frittata and yucca fries. All were very tasty. What was really good were the dipping sauces that are provided - one is tomato-based and the other is a cilantro sauce. I hope they do not get blanded-down for the customer base. The nice thing about tapas is that you can nibble on several different items in an evening. The menu includes several entrees as well.

The service could not have been friendlier.

The restaurant has a good bit of space and could become a real destination for dining as well as what could become a social gathering place. It will need to develop into a fun spot if it is going to attract the upper west siders away from their comfort zone. The background music must improve - it should be Spanish. I understand that there will be live music at least on Saturday nights. Some Spanish decor would be nice too.

Bravo Pizza - now Kosher!

If you go on the late side (past 10) they only serve pizza.

NYC Kosher Restaurant with best beer selection?

Update - Bravo Pizza has a surprisingly large and varied selection (bottles only).

D'Espresso/Screme Gelato

I was wondering what that unfamiliar meat was in my sandwich! DeisCane's info is accurate.

D'Espresso/Screme Gelato

Thanks Craig - I should have specified locale.

D'Espresso/Screme Gelato

Popped in for lunch today. Had a very tasty mozzarella sandwich with fresh basil, tomato and a nice pesto. They call their sandwiches "panini" but I would describe them more as sandwiches made on your choice of lightly toasted fresh bread; they are not pressed. It was modest in size and there are few other savory items on the menu so I might regard D'Espresso/Screme Gelato as a place to get a quick snack rather than a full meal.

The gelato looked great as usual for their stores. Regrettably, I had a chocolate croissant, which proved to be stale.

Travel Meals

I strongly concur regarding MyOwnMeals. They have been stalwart companions of mine around the world.

Manhattan restaurant

Just to clarify, I agree with you completely that Prime KO doesn't come close to Pardes; I just offered it based on what is available in Manh.

Manhattan restaurant

I am in complete agreement that Pardes has no parallel in Manhattan. For creativity, I might add Prime KO to the list.

Harmony Passover cheddar

Funny how their website differentiates between "Super Kosher" (cholov yisroel - Star K) and "Low Kosher" (Star-D (presumably cholov stam)). I noticed that they are projecting to offer kosher Parmesan (Super Kosher) in August. Has anyone tried their cheeses? Are they only available via internet?

Bravo Pizza - now Kosher!

Quick notes: A nice selection of toppings, styles (deep dish, stuffed, Sicilian, etc.). I sampled a plain slice as a baseline indicator. It was decent by which I mean better than most. The crust is unusually light and crispy on the bottom. Some may like that; I like my crusts to be thin but a bit chewier. Sauce was decent and cheese was plentiful. I would like to try some of their other offerings. Pluses: they are open until 11 pm and they serve beer. They might consider removing the large poster showing a pepperoni pizza that is in the dining area. The slice was not quite as good as Rosa’s but location and hours make it a good option for me.

How else can I cook sausage?

sautéed with olive oil and onions. Afterwards they can be used to flavor sauces or just eaten as is or in a sandwich

Kosher Food and Wine Experience 2012

I would echo AdinaA's identification of the three best foods. Otherwise, I would have liked a bit more variety - eventually, it seemed as though every vendor was offering some version of slow-cooked beef.

Very tasty wines.

Best Kosher Wings

In Manhattan, its Clubhouse Cafe, though I think they are not quite as good as they once were.

Kosher Food and Wine Experience 2012

I also noticed that the posted list of food vendors was smaller than last year but maybe there will be some late additions.

NYC Kosher Restaurant with best beer selection?

1) Pardes; 2) Basil. In Manhattan, Clubhouse has an ok selection (bottles only)

Kosher Food and Wine Experience 2012

I will be returning as the lure of this paean to gluttony is too strong for me to resist.

Positive Experience at ETC. steakhouse in Teaneck

Based on recent reviews here and elsewhere, I ventured to ETC. for a birthday dinner. I will not be repeating my error.

I arrived at the time of my reservation – no maître d’ in sight but two I-Phones were propped up at her station (these received a good deal more attention than I was to experience). After being seated for 25 minutes, a man came by – he did not introduce himself as our server – and asked “Do you know what you want?” We placed our order and our bottle of wine was taken to be opened. When it returned, it was with a thud and not was poured into to our glasses. I sipped my wine as that was all that was on the table, while noting the odd choice of loud soundtrack coming from the speaker positioned over my head – Beatles and Aerosmith.

As we finished our appetizers, we heard a server explaining the day’s specials to the table next to ours. Specials?? Around this time someone came by to ask if we would like bread (is bread now a palate cleanser?).

Entrees arrived along with a massive plate that held two steak knives. When done, our plates were left on the table for an exceptionally long time, that is, until someone came and stacked them up on the table right in front of me. I suppose I should have been grateful that dirty dishes from other tables we not part of the pile.

The worst of it? When I made my reservation, and again when I called to confirm that afternoon, I requested that a chocolate molten cake be brought to the table with a candle when it was dessert time as a surprise, since I knew that an overt offer of dessert would have been declined by the honoree. Well, having already had such a dreadful experience with the appalling lack of competent service, I was not surprised when no cake appeared.

As for the food, the fillet cut was tough, dry and hard to cut much less eat. No flavor either. The lamb maltagliati was good but the portion small. Short ribs were certainly tender but too sweet for my tastes. Rib eye was a better cut than the fillet.

Cholent in a Bella Triple Slow Cooker

Even when the lid is on, there is about a square centimeter opening at the lip.

Cholent in a Bella Triple Slow Cooker

Does anyone know if this device (seen at B.B. and B) can be used to make cholent? It has a groove in the ceramic containers to allow a spoon to rest inside and I am wondering if it will emit so much steam so as to dry out a cholent overnight. Kind thanks.

Kosher products in Nassau/Bahamas

Sorry, my experience was with flying. Personally, I'd rely on things that you can buy in the supermarket; I don't like to rely on meals that may (or may not) show up. I have explored sending meals to various islands and it has never worked for me. Maybe a wholesaler would be better situated to accomplish this.

Kosher products in Nassau/Bahamas

I found a decent selection of standard groceries at the Winn-Dixie replacement but no "frozen main courses" a la Meal Mart, if that's what you are looking for. Mind you, I brought my own frozen entrees without issue.
