Best Chow in Guangzhou

Hello all!

I am planning a two week trip to Guangzhou (with some day trips to Shenzen), and I would like to get recommendations on where to eat. I am NOT limiting myself to Cantonese cuisine; since I am not going anywhere else in China, I will have to rely on restaurants around Guangzhou to represent all of Chinese cuisine.

To make the thread as complete as possible, I'll quickly summarize what previous hounds have posted, then list some restaurants I have seen in travel books.

Does anyone have any opinions on any of these, or tips on restaurants not listed here?

From hounds:

- Xin Yun Lou (辛运楼) (also called "Lucky Fellow Restaurant" on their business cards, but good luck trying to find the place by that name) at 322 Ren Min Middle Road (人民中路), phone 8322-0738.
- row of small restaurants on Pan Fu Road (盘福路), just south of Yue Xiu Park (越秀公园).
- second floor of the International Financial Building (国际金融大厦), there is a large restaurant that is pricy but supposed to be good.
- Guangzhou restaurant 广州饭店 on Shang Xia Jiu Bu Xing Jie (上下九步行街) (pedestrian street), at the corner of Wen Chang Nan Lu (文昌南路)
- Mei Jing (美景) Restaurant on Ren Min Bei Lu (人民北路) across from the Liu Hua Park (流花公园)
- congee restaurant called Zhou MFEMF (粥城) ("Congee City")
- Lee Garden for lunch or dinner
- Ban Xi Restaurant next to Li Wan Hu Park (荔湾湖公园)
- Dong Jiang (东江) on YanJiang Lu (沿江路).
- Tao Heung Hotpot Seafood restaurant in the Landmark Hotel.
- bing sheng - sprawling local mid-range family restaurant chain, no reservations, get there early (5.30-6pm).
- yin ji - steamed rice paper rolls (chang fen of cheung fun in cantonese).
- the chinese resto at the white swan hotel

From Lonely Planet:

- Wuzhanji (corner of Longjin and Liwan Lu)
- Nanxin (47 Dishpu Lu)
- Chuanguo Yanyi (Nanfang Securities Building)
- Lucy's (3 Shamian Nanjie)
- Tao Tao Ju Restaurant (20 Dishpu Lu)
- 1920 Restaurant and Bar
- Panxi Restaurant (151 Longjin Xilu)
- Kohinoor (8 Lujing Lu)
- Bingsheng Restaurant (33 DongxiaoLu)
- Thai Zhen Cow & Bridge (54 Shamian Beijie)
- La Seine (33 Qingbo Lu)

From Eyewitness Travel Guide:

- Taotao Ju (Xiao Bei Lu 202)
- Taste of India
- Guangzhou Jiujia (Wenchang Nan Lu 2)
- Mao Jia Fandian (Beijing Nan Lu Da Xia 6/F)
- East River Seafood Restuarant (Dong Jiang Hai Xian Jiu Jia)
- Qiaomei Shijia (Shamian Nan Jie 52)

Any comments? Would love to hear specific dishes to order. I will be going with about 25 people.

[MSP] Best restaurant from which to watch Holidazzle Parade

[Chowhound Challenge of the Week]

Well ... the parents are coming for Christmas (from San Jose), and my mom ran into someone from Minneapolis who said that the ABSOLUTE best thing to do in Minneapolis in December is to make a reservation on the _second_ floor of a restaurant on Nicollet and watch the Holidazzle parade. So now, my mom is totally fixated on doing this.

Please Chowhound, where can I eat that will give my mother her desired parade-watching experience and give my wife and I a good meal? It has to be on the second floor of a restaurant on Nicollet and have tables near a window that overlooks the mall ... I am too unfamiliar with downtown to know this.

Oh.... and my father is deathly allergic to MSG. Ha!

Vincent?
Brit's?
Zelo?

Josh

PS. My apologies if this post just caused the chowishness meter of the Midwest board to peg the left end.

Minneapolis-StPaul: CRABCAKES

check. don't eat crabcakes at New Louisiana.

Minneapolis-StPaul: CRABCAKES

friend, we might be talking about different restaurants. the only restaurant kitty corner from MM is Paisano's Pizza and Hoagies. If I saw crabcakes on the menu there I would flip out and kill people.

What place are you referring to?

Minneapolis-StPaul: CRABCAKES

How can i not recommend the crab cake bendict at Longfellow grill? it's pretty tasty.

Little Szechuan St. Paul: So Excited!

Ya. Went the other night. Got the chung king shrimp (not what we ordered) and it was incredible. i could have eaten myself sick. also got the chung king chicken WITH BONES which was quite interesting.... Lindsey said that maybe they actually eat the bones? Can anyone confirm this? Do people seriously eat all those little bone shards? wow. props. in any case it was delicious also. we will be returning at the first available opportunity.

Minneapolis itinerary--suggestions?

I come into this thread late, but ....

If some friends of MINE were visiting MOA and they ABSOLUTELY had to eat there, I would honestly tell them to go to PBLoco, the peanut-butter sandwich shop. It could be considered a lunch or a light supper before going out for reals afterwards. But seriously, they make really good peanut butter sandwiches! PBLoco has other locations (but only 2 I think) so it's kind of a Minnesota-only experience, unlike most other things there.

Serious. For me, food at MOA == PBLoco.

And it's a very good vegetarian option, since they removed the pork chop peanut butter. They do still have curry, dark chocolate, banana, raspberry/white chocolate, sun dried tomato, and apricot flavored peanut butter. And more.

Brisket in Minneapolis

PS. Josh do you know about northwest charcoal and chemical for smoking chunks?

what is the best brew pub in Minneapolis-Saint Paul

barley johns:
http://www.barleyjohns.com/

It's in New Brighton. That's kind of my only complaint about the place, the location. But the beer is FANTASTIC.

Hear, hear, MaryMN, the pizza indeed is great!

Brisket in Minneapolis

I've always got mine at Von Hansons (St Paul location), ordered to specification ahead of time. Never had any complaints.

I've never found them big enough at L/B.

what is the best brew pub in Minneapolis-Saint Paul

I have to second some of the recs that Davydd made. Minneapolis Town Hall Brewery is great. They brew excellent beer and have (IMHO) the second best fries in town.

And Barley Johns is great too... great food and super beer. Both beer snob places.

I have yet to see the appeal in Rock Bottom, but I chalk that up to not having returned since they got a new brewer (i hear?).... when last I went I was underwhelmed at the beer.

[MSP] Places in Twin Cities for espresso?

Does anyone know anything about the Rancilio Silvia? I have been looking around for the lowest possible price point at which I can make superb espresso at home and came up with that just through the intarweb.

[MSP] Places in Twin Cities for espresso?

dangit.... i searched before posting.... sorry about the repeat... however I will say that the tips here are better than the other thread, except for the mention of several MSP coffeehouses winning the Golden Cup awards.

However, upon further research, it appears that the only criteria for winning the award is judged according to the following criteria:
Much of the judging takes place in our laboratory. We chemically analyze the samples submitted by each entrant to ascertain the amount of minerals in the water, as well as the ratio of water to coffee. Only samples found to be within the SCAA's prescribed limits qualify for the Golden Cup award.

No mention of actually tasting the coffee... hrm.

[MSP] Places in Twin Cities for espresso?

Man. I am sad. I thought for sure in such a foodie town there would be hidden nooks for coffee nookie.

Too bad....

[MSP] Places in Twin Cities for espresso?

Coffee geeks, ahoy!

Where can I find:
- the best crema?
- the most careful brew?
- the richest beans?
- the greatest balance?

I'm looking for balls to the wall artisanal ridiculousness. People who take their espresso as seriously as I take my beer.

Thanks
Josh
