Sonoma Itinerary Check (or Napa instead?!)

dkenworthy's suggestions are all great-- I live in Sonoma and frequent the Fremont Diner weekly because it is so awesome. If you like Mex there is also a wonderful little place called El Molino on route 12. Boon Fly also serves a great dinner. Gloria Ferrer does a good bubbly too.

Commercial Cooking Equipment

Hi Bay Area Chowhounds,

I am a transplant who is bringing a non-profit to the North Bay. We'll be cooking meals for an average of 100 people per week. I am not familiar with the restaurant supply stores here. Back east you could go to an auction every week because so many restaurants went out of business. Are there auctions here, and if not, are some stores better priced than others? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you!

Graduation Dinner

The graduation ran so long that I had to keep postponing our reservation. Rustic Canyon was very flexible but after the third time I had to call and cut them loose because they did need the table again for a later reservation. So, we never got to Rustic Canyon -- ended up eating Vietnamese that night in some nondescript downtown location -- not especially memorable. We'll have to go back and try again soon.

Thanks for all your suggestions -- I think we are going to make a reservation at Rustic Canyon. Will let you know how it went!

Graduation Dinner

Yum, Fig looks like the top choice right now but still doing my due dilligence to research them all. Most of us would be happy at any of these places but I am worried about the grandparents. If the place is really trendy or they don't recognize most of what is on the menu they will get cranky (or crankier) so we need to find a happy compromise.

Thanks all,

Looks like some good options. I'll check out their menus this weekend and let you know where we end up.

Graduation Dinner

Hi L.A. Chowhounders,
I've been searching your boards for a good place to take our son for his graduation dinner in May. So far, I've looked at the Palm in West Hollywood, the Fig in the Fairmont in Santa Monica and Animal. My son is a meat eater, but I am a vegetarian. We have a grandparent and other son who love seafood. My spouse and I live in Northern Ca. so we're used to great farm to table cuisine. Our budget is in the $50/pp range without drinks. In the past we've also enjoyed Akasha and Spago. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Christmas in the Castro?

We have a reservation at Chapeau but Eureka looks pretty good too. I called and they said they would begin taking reservations next week once they work out their menu. Frances only had seating at the bar. Poesia isn't answering their phone.

Christmas in the Castro?

Wolfe I meant I couldn't get a reservation at Frances on open table. Windy-- we do usually go to a more upscale place for the holiday but I will definitely try the Indian and Thai places you recommend another time. Thanks Robert -- I'll check if Poesia is open. What do you all think of Chapeau?

Christmas in the Castro?

Hi there,

Totally psyched to be moving to foodie nirvana (SF Bay) just before Christmas. My kids will be visiting from college and we have tickets for a concert in the Castro on Christmas eve. Wondering if anyone has any advice for restaurants (other than Chinese) that might be open that night? Through a little searching here on the CH boards I did locate Frances-- couldnt get anything on Open Table (waiting till 2p when they start answering phone). Wondering if anyone might have any other suggestions for dinner in that general vicinity?

Thank you in advance!

good breakfast place in newton/brookline area

Sour Girl asked for a "good" breakfast place not a list of places to eat breakfast. None of the places mentioned in Brookline rise to the level of good. I had a decent brunch at Pomodoro over the weekend but even they can be hit or miss. If you want a basic, decent breakfast Zaftigs is your best bet. The rest stink to high heaven except for Deluxe which doesnt count because it's not here yet.

Birthday dinner in Tucson

Just wanted to let you know we went to Kazoku and it was great. I wouldn't say the best sushi I ever had-- probably give it a B plus. But the service was definitely an A. They tried very hard to please us. 5 of us had sushi and the other 3 ate cooked food. Too many items to get into great detail but I loved the nigiri-- the maki were very well done and even the teriyaki eaters enjoyed their meal. One even ventured into sushi-land and loved it. The miso soup they brought to start was very tasty-- I think there may have been chicken broth in there. We also had edamame which everyone liked. At the end of our meal they brought out our birthday cake with candles and sang to our son-- afterwards they brought him fried ice cream with another candle and then plum ice cream for everyone. Needless to say we left there stuffed and happy.
Thanks all!

Looking for the menu for Kazoku-- we have a couple non-sushi eaters in our group. Do they have some cooked entrees as well?

Korean BBQ for beginners

Went to Soowoon Galbi last night for the first time and loved it! Food was very good, service was fine although they seemed rushed. We ordered beef, chicken, pork and shrimp. Sides were very good especially something white they described as aloe? Never saw it before but it was really good -- shredded white strands that tasted creamy. Next time we will be a little more adventurous and go for the pork belly.

brunch and dinner

Hi LA Chowhounds,

I am visiting for USC Parents weekend from Boston and tomorrow is my birthday. My partner has chosen Tavern for dinner tomorrow night but is now having second thoughts. Campanile is booked. We don't have any restrictions -- wondering if you might have other suggestions for a birthday dinner for three people? Also, we are going to be at the Santa Monica Farmers Market tomorrow. Can you recommend a good brunch place in the area? The closer to the beach the better but we don't want to sacrifice location for food. I have been looking at your board and so far all I came up with is Anisette or Amelia's.

Vinegar and Citrus Primer

I've been using white balsamic lately -- it's a little bit lighter tasting and won't darken vegetables.

Just moved to Boston and need help!

I live in Brookline too and agree with most of the above posts but no one has mentioned one of our favorite take out sandwich places -- the Brookline Spa on Harvard St. It doesnt look like much and it took me years to give it a try, but the sandwiches are great. We always stop there before a road trip so we dont have to buy bad food on the highway.

Looking for kitchen supply store

Unfortunately all the Mom and Pops are long gone but if price is what you are after there is a Bed and Bath right near the Fenway stop on the green line. Bowl and Board is a bit more precious and staff is never friendly.

I second Yale Electric and Appliances for the bigger stuff. Great place.

Visiting Seattle and Vancouver

Hello NW Chowhounds -- hoping this isnt too broad a question. Coming to Seattle (from Boston) for a graduation in June and we will have at least a couple days to ourselves. After that we are headed to Vancouver for four or five days. Would love any suggestions you might like to offer for breakfast, lunch or dinner. Seems like you have some cool neighborhoods. What should we not miss?

Village Smokehouse

Get ready for a super long wait at Orinoco. We were there a couple weeks ago -- wanted to get to a movie afterwards but the wait was almost 2 hours even though they told us 45 minutes. The staff was apologetic and they bought us a round of drinks so we decided to chalk it up to newness and agreed to give them another chance. Appetizers were very good, entrees seemed small but maybe because we were starving by the time we sat down.

Large Group at Vlora

Have been hearing lots of great things about Vlora. We have a special occassion coming up and I wondered whether I could take a large group there, like 25 people? So far, there are no physical descriptions of the place. Does anyone know if Vlora can accomodate large groups?
