Stowe,VT

Thinking about a weekend at Topnotch at Stowe, an old favorite for the amenities and spa. We've heard that some of our favorite dining sports have closed. We love great food, an upbeat vibe (nothing stuffy) and are open to any cuisine except Indian.

John's Island, South Carolina Restaurants

Probably dinner, but lunch is a possibility. The culture of the food doesn't matter for this meal...we just wanted to get a feel for the dining experience.

Fat Hen or Wild Olive?

Charleston Suggestions?

Heading from Vermont to Kiawah for a week and want to spend some time eating in Charleston.
We already have reservations at Husk. We don't want to eat anything that we could eat in landlocked VT...we're looking for shrimp and grits, oysters, local seafood...don't want anyplace where the men would have to wear jackets.

Dinner in Virginia near I 95

We're driving from Vermont to Kiawah, S.C. and hope to be near Richmond, VA by dinnertime...Looking for casual but Chowworthy dinner...nothing ethnic, one of our party is a picky eater.

Share your Seder Menu!

Instead of stuffing...try Emeril Lagasse's creole matzo farfel.

Looking for Best Destination Restaurants in VT, NH, ME

I have to disagree about Brasserie L'Ousteau. While it's a fun place with a great vibe, the cooking is very traditional...calf's liver, mussels and frites, spit roasted chicken...not a destination restaurant.

Things that aren't available in VT

Chowhounders who have moved to VT are looking for a funtime in NYC on Monday and Tuesday.
My list would be Di Paulo's, Eataly, something new and interesting in the chinatown area, Mary's or Pearl's Oyster Bar...just trying to find things that we don't readily have available in VT.
What do you think?
We're not looking replicate EMP or Le Bernardin
Thanks.

Looking for Best Destination Restaurants in VT, NH, ME

If there is anything like Hen of the Wood, I haven't found it yet. Primo in Maine comes close...and we drove 2 1/2 hours each way to eat there. I also like the restaurant at Simon Pearce in Quechee, VT especially for lunch in the summer. Great care goes into the menu, the tablesettings are beautiful, with their glassware etc and the view of the falls is lovely.
I had great hopes for Downtown Grocery in Ludlow, VT but it isn't quite there yet.

Large Group Brunch - Manchester, VT?

How large is the group? I'd try The Dorset Inn or a new restaurant in Manchester, Brasserie L'Ousteau...both would be on the pricey side. I've heard good things about the buffet brunch at the Inn at Wallingford, but that's 20 minutes north of Manchester.

90th Birthday Brunch or Lunch in Princeton Area

We'd probably be willing to travel about 45 minutes. Thanks.

90th Birthday Brunch or Lunch in Princeton Area

Sunday, but we could be flexible.

90th Birthday Brunch or Lunch in Princeton Area

Looking for a place for a family brunch/lunch celebration for my mother's 90th birthday. We will be 8 people including a toddler (with a chowhound palate already). Any cuisine except Indian and price is not an issue. We just want somewhere that will feel celebratory and not too loud.
If there was a Peter Kelly style restaurant nearby (Restaurant X, X20, Xavier's) that would be perfect.
What are your thoughts on Peacock Inn? Bearnards Inn? The Manor?

Catering - Paramus

Great Foods in Oradell on Kinderkamack Road does a great job. They are easy to work with and offer many options...ask for Steve, the owner.

Chowish side dish with Christmas ham

I just picked up a beautiful ham from our local smokehouse and I'm planning to serve it on Christmas Eve. I'll probably do baked beans and a green salad, but I need an idea for something fruity and light.
Does anyone have apple or pineapple thoughts?

Driving from VT to Albany on Sunday to see a movie at Spectrum 8. Where can we get a decent dinner after the movie?

We would prefer someplace that didn't serve a lot of legumes (Indian) because of an allergy....but would enjoy well prepared, preferably locally sourced ingredients at less that $50 pp.

Need a tgiving "greens" dish that isn't the traditional creamed whatever...

We make string beans (either roasted or steamed) served room temperature, tossed with balsamic vinegar and olive oil , with sliced pears, dried cranberries, toasted pecans (or walnuts) and a sprinkle of blue cheese.

Shake it up - your snazziest, tastiest shrimp salad?

Instead of poaching the shrimp... oven roast them, tossed with a little oil, salt and pepper and any flavoring, herb or spice that will go with the rest of the recipe.

Sushi near Chester, VT

I have been told of an Inn near Chester, VT that serves wonderful sushi, fresh from the markets in Boston. No one could explain detailed directions or was sure of the exact name of the place. HELP!

Lunch near Rock Center

Looking for a recommendation for lunch for 10 - 12 women after an architectural tour of Rock Center.
We are open to all cuisines but don't want anything too touristy or expensive. Can we get away with under $20.00 an entree? We guess our best bets would be on the West Side.

Special dinner near Manchester Vt

Just returned from dinner at Downtown Grocery and it was worth the drive (from Manchester). We loved everything we ordered and there is great attention to detail. When you make a reservation, ask for a comfortable table and you won't be disappointed. Dishes we loved were quail, gnocchi Bolognese, mussels, pork rib, and the breakfast dessert. Also...the local apple cider with orange peel (with or without bourbon). There is a great energy in the restaurant and the service was excellent.

Fat Witch Brownie Mix

I was given a gift of the Fat Witch Brownie Mix...I'm thinking of altering it...like a layer of raspberry preserves or caramel with sea salt spread. Any suggestions?

Special dinner near Manchester Vt

You cannot go wrong with Chanticleer. I used to think that their menu was stodgy and passe, but they buy the best ingredients and cook everything well. The rooms are comfortable and charming and the service is good.
There is a new restaurant called Silver Fork. It is lovely and has an ever-changing menu, however the room is small (only 6 tables) and it might be less than comfortable for your parents. It is the most interesting place in town, run by a lovely couple who really know "their stuff."

Unforgettable Restaurant Experiences

Ariel Sands in Bermuda...dinner on the beach by the light of a full moon.
I have no idea if it is still there.

Breakfast in Hanover NH

We will be in Hanover/Lebanon early Tuesday morning for a consultation at Dartmouth-Hitchcock.
Where can we get a good breakfast after seeing the doctor?

Best Apple Pies in NH/VT?

+2 for Mountain Creamery...they used to ship to NJ and NYC, but now you have to go there and order your own 5 pounds of apples wrapped up in pie...it's a nice drive from anywhere...we come from Manchester VT at lease twice a year for the pie.

Lunch Friday 6/3 in Great Barrington

Looking for a nice spot to catch up with a friend...any cuisine except Indian...price doesn't matter.

Report on restaurants in Stowe/Waterbury VT

Our first dinner was at the Alchemist, a brew pub in Waterbury that was in the style of a gastropub. Very lively crowd on Thursday night with delicious food, made with great care. We loved the mussels in a white wine, butter and thyme sauce and the red rice, beans and homemade andouille sausage.
Lots of choices of beer which delighted DH.
Friday night was our dinner at Hen of the Wood and it lived up to all of our expectations...think Gramercy Tavern in the basement of an old grist mill with natural beams, stone walls lit by dozens of votive candles, an open kitchen and a very knowledgeable wait staff. Our first courses of fried oysters that surpassed our former favorites at the former Mike and Tony's in Park Slope, and calamari sauteed with lemon oil and chili were great starters. We shared duck breast with mustard seed cabbage and wild halibut served over garlic pureed potatoes with wild arugula...couldn't decide which was more delicious...then the cheese course of Jasper Hill Bailey Hazen Blue and another Vermont cow's milk cheese were served with candied fennel and apple butter. I can't believe we had room for dessert, but I'm glad we did...butterscotch pudding with salted caramel and chocolate crunch...every bit as good as it sounds.
Saturday night we found a real winner in Stowe (recommended by our server at Hen of the Wood)
Santos was a creative latin, fun amazing surprise...Everything from the amuse of a tostone with shredded beef and a cilantro chimmichurra, to the composed salad, delicious soup, fabulous cerviche of ahi tuna and shrimp was an explosion of flavor. DH, who never orders the vegetarian entree, decided to give the vegetarian paella a try and he wasn't sorry...it was perfect, as was my snapper with root vegetable tamale...dessert was a proper chocolate souffle with dulce de leche creme anglaise...need I say more?
Sunday morning breakfast was at the Dutch Pancake House in Stowe where they serve 12" Pancakes that are a little thicker than a French crepe...with about 25 choice of add-ins. We decided to go savory...I had the bacon pancake...DH had the potato, onion and cheddar served with applesauce. We headed home will very satisfied stomachs...
P.S. We stopped at Lake Champlain Chocolates on the way to the Interstate.

Stowe VT for the weekend...where to eat?

We already have a reservation at Hen of the Wood for Friday night...any must-order menu items?
We're looking for something casual for Thursday night...anyone know about the Thai restaurant in Waterbury? We'll want to stay closer to Stowe for Saturday night and could use a recommendation.
We live in Southern Vermont and the restaurant scene is pretty bleak so we are open to all suggestions.
