Fine Italian places for a Date?
Giorgio Baldi in Santa Monica is a very, very nice date place, especially if price isn't an issue. It's as far west as you can go without falling into the ocean, but that can certainly add to the experience.

Get yourself down to Colori Kitchen downtown. They make it with mussels, clams, shrimp, squid, whatever the day's fish special is, and a big old prawn split down the middle. The best part is the grilled bread they throw in, save it for the end and sop up all the garlicky goodness. I ordered it the other day, and though it was on the specials menu, I've seen it there the past three times I've gone. I would call ahead to make sure. Seriously, go.

Good Rabbit?
For some reason, I'm craving rabbit a good rabbit dish. I live in Silver Lake, but willing to travel (within reason). Fancy-schmancy places are fine, but mid-range down to dirt-cheap are great too. Any recommendations?

Eating out alone
I began eating alone when I was single and I still love it now that I'm not (though I don't do it as often). What better time to do some reading, catch up on your newspaper, or simply unwind? I think sushi bars in particular are great for the solo diner. You can talk all you want with the chef, or just keep your nose in your book, and the whole thing doesn't empty your wallet.
Also, it's nice to devour a big, sloppy cheeseburger and not feel self-conscious as you get it all over your face.

I'm a Detroit native in Los Angeles, and I've seen no sign of them out here. If you come for a trip, pack a dozen in a suitcase.
On a side note, it's hard to find coney dogs as well.
Food at Hotel Figueroa?
I'm possibly having my wedding at the Hotel Figueroa downtown. They take care of everything, which is great, but I've yet to try the food. Anyone eaten there? Thoughts?
Quince! ...Quince?
I was at Vons yesterday and saw they had quince(s?) on sale. I've never had quince, but I bought one. What do I do with it? Eat it raw? Make it a sauce? Braise it, bake it, fry it, grill it? What does it go well with?
1 Dinner in LA?
I love Sona on La Cienega. Not necessarily casual, but a terrific tasting menu (set aside 3 hours).
Also, Luques in West Hollywood. More casual, but very, very, good, with a nice little fireplace lounge beside the bar.
I heartily second Brophy Brothers in Santa Barbara (not the one in Ventura). Clam chowder. Seriously.

MALO in Silverlake
Mission Cantina is at Sunset and Bronson (by the Arby's). It's closer to the Vine station but it also has decent street parking in the area. Try the nachos.

I had the same bad experience many times at Malo, including on a night when it wasn't busy. For some reason I kept giving them another chance before finally learning my lesson.
As an alternative, I went to the new Loteria Grill location in Hollywood recently. Granted, it's in the middle of the nonsense that is Hollywood Boulevard, but the food was great, obviously what Malo wishes it could be. Despite the place being packed, the hostess got us a spot at the bar quickly. The service was quick and charismatic, and the chef even walked past to ask us how everything was, and to let him know if they "messed anything up," (far from it).
Or, for something more straightforward on the food front, I love the new Mission Cantina next to Delancey. A small, simple menu, but they obviously use quality ingredients. Also, the tequila selection is vast and they're more than happy to walk novices like me through some of the choices.
It's not the easiest place to get to, what with the total lack of parking in Hollywood, but it's certainly worth a trip on the Metro.
Are tasting menus worth the $$$
Hatfield's also does the tandem tasting, and it's a little less expensive than Sona (which is wonderful). I've done it twice and remain a big fan.
I believe Grace also does a TM, not sure if that's been mentioned.
Take Out for Party in Palm Springs
My fiancee and I are having an 80-person cocktail party at a house we're renting in Palm Springs. Every caterer we talk to wants to turn it into a 60-per-person affair, and we just want people to eat well without feeling like they're at a stuffy wedding.
Anybody know of a local restaurant that can do take-out or delivery for that many people? Middle Eastern, Spanish, things like that would be great. Thanks!
