What to do with Pistachio Paste?

I just posted my favorite recipe ever for pistachio paste - you make mini-loaves (or mini-muffins) and top with pineapples in spiced syrup! http://wanderlustandlipstick.com/blog...

Kids Making Drinks

I think a lot of you are confusing the act of drinking and alcohol with over-indulging. Alcohol does not equal alcoholism. That's like saying no one should eat cheesecake in front of children because it could lead them to obesity - well, it could, but there are a lot of other factors that determine whether the kid will take it to an unhealthy extreme.

Allowing children to be around adults who drink responsibly is good role-modeling, and being able to make a few cocktails is a life skill that I would be happy to impart to my offspring. Sure, they can take a sip of wine, beer or a cocktail, and I can pretty much guarantee you that they won't like it. I didn't like wine at all until I was 20 - it's all in how you RAISE your kids.

I'd be darn proud to have a kid who could turn out a decent Sidecar. But alas, until I have kids of my own, I'll have to mix my classic cocktails myself.

How do you use white truffle oil?

I mix a little (very little) with honey and drizzle it over granny apple slices with brie and candied walnuts. You can also make a salad dressing out of it with olive oil, balsamic vinegar and honey.

How to Talk Politics Over Dinner

I was raised to avoid discussing money, politics and religion in polite company, but at my last dinner party, the 6 of us threw that out the window. And because we were all respectful of eachother, and none of us are that combative about our political stances, it worked and made for lively conversation. That was a lucky fluke to find people who view differing ideas as endearing quirks rather than calls to battle. That said, I believe we all refrained from airing our most offensive opinions and stuck to the relatively safe ones--it was, after all, a dinner party.

Tea Parties Must Make a Comeback

I've been hosting tea parties for the past year, and can't recommend them enough. I like holding mine on Saturdays, since the caffeine from the tea makes early bedtimes impossible. I've done mini english trifles, smoked salmon and dill sandwiches, and apple slices with brie, truffle honey and candied walnuts at mine. Gotta love finger foods! Tea is definitely making a comeback with my friends. Good job Helena, I'm enjoying your advice columns a lot. Too bad about the Negative Nancies--they're not very polite at all.
