SD: Hudson Bay Seafood feedback?

http://www.sdcitybeat.com/cms/story/d...

I've heard from friends that the seafood here has greatly improved since Matt Conniff took over. Candice Woo just wrote a review on it in City Beat.

Anyone been? If so, do you have recommendations for their signature dishes?

Food that makes you particularly sad?

I think there are many people who eat at Taco Bell with the realization that it is NOT authentic Mexican food and because it is cheap, consistent in quality, and pretty tasty.

Any new sugguestions for San Diego?

I just created a new post about hidden gems in SD.

We like "Crepes and Corks Cafe" in Del Mar. Pretty reasonable prices for delicious dinner and dessert crepes.

SD: Your Hidden Gem

Is there a San Diego restaurant/cafe/bar that you've discovered or have regularly patronized that seems to fall off the radar? You willing to let us in on any hidden gems?

A few months ago my wife and I stumbled upon "Crepes and Corks Cafe" in Del Mar. It's an unassuming, small cafe-ish restaurant near Bully's. They serve dinner and dessert crepes, soups, sandwiches, and offer a full wine menu. Our favorite dessert crepe consists of pears, Nutella, and chocolate. We've tried several of their other crepes and found them to be absolutely delicious.

Julie and Julia Review-NYT

small h, that is so funny you mention this ripoff. As I watched the beginning scene where Julie sits at lunch with her well-to-do friends, I immediately recalled "Friends. . .". This scene in "Julie & Julia" seemed so phony and over-the-top; almost misplaced in the whole movie. Then again, I found most of the Julie scenes to seem....artificial and trite.

Weekend in San Diego - Reporting Back.

Agreed, Josh, that PLSF seems overrated. Blue Water's fish tastes better, and they have way more options for grilled fish. I just wish their location was easier to get in and out of, or at least with better parking. Can't have it all, I guess.

Thank you for posting the link, Robert. Interesting to gain Powell's insight regarding the typical discrepancies between fact and Hollywood fiction.

". . .you would know she is very self-indulgent."

Yawn. Powell admits to being solipsistic. Would her book have come about if she weren't focused on herself? And these days, who isn't?

It's getting a bit trite for people to label successful women, who chronicle their adventures or lecture on a topic, as self-indulgent.

No one ever accuses Sedaris, Burroughs, or even Dr. Phil as being self-indulgent.

New Trader Joe's yea/nay thread

I prefer TJ's hummus over that at Whole Foods or most chain markets. Also, it's one of the few places that offers a pretty decent variety of pita chips.

Wow....you used my favorite word: pulchritudinous. So true that the sound of the word doesn't really align with the meaning. First learned it from David Sedaris.

Carminative is a good one also. Akin to another fun one: borborygmus.

Paul, you must be a Scrabble and/or Crossword puzzle genius.

bagelman, what irritated you about this flick? Was it the portrayal of Julie Powell, the jumping from one character to another, the dialogue....what?

I actually agree with your assertions.

Like you, I am nonplussed about the love for establishments such as El Indio, Hodad's, Fillipi's, and may I add: Extraordinary Desserts, C-Level, Pt. Loma Seafoods (WAY overrated, I'll get blasted for that), and Burger Lounge.

Streep and Adams were wonderful in their roles. Anyone else annoyed by Mary Lynn Rajskub? She plays the same squirmy-faced, cranky, cynical, character in 24. I could not stand her in any of the scenes she was in. If Julie Powell really had a friend like this; someone who agreed she was a bitch, then my apologies.

What Julia ACTUALLY THOUGHT about Julie's Blog

I am curious as to the relevance of the hearsay of Julia's "opinion" to Julie's blog.

Granted, these two women, Julia and Julie, had culinary ambitions. They also came from different generations and backgrounds. Their intentions were also disparate. Those variable should not take away from what Julie set out to do and eventually did.

This reminds me of Anna Wintour's supposed reaction to Lauren Weisenberg's, "Devil Wears Prada".

Olive Garden: Undeserved Reputation?

I find OG to be absolutely repulsive. For anyone to classify it as authentic Italian is ludicrous, akin to describing Tio Leo's in So CA or Taco Bell to authentic Mexican.

If this chain is the best option for Italian in your neighborhood, surely you are better off boiling pasta and topping it off with canned red sauce.

No need to get defensive.

Your assertion that it's a "knee-jerk Rocky's worship" is purely subjective and groundless.

"Rocky's, boo. This has to be the most ridiculous, unthinking, . . ."

THIS coming from someone who extols the burgers at Burger Lounge?

Chalk it up to different tastes, my friend.

SD: Flay fish taco throwdown!

"There are much better fish taco places in the San Diego area."

Let me guess: Rubios. Mariscos German. Brigantine. South Beach in OB.

Can you come up with more than those four places that serve "much better fish tacos"? This is not meant to be rhetorical or snide, I really am curious. I live in Del Mar half the year and only know of the above-mentioned spots.

San Diego near the Westin Gaslamp

The wine selection at Chloe is disappointing. I love the place, I really do, but their selection of beer and wine does not match the excellent food and atmosphere.

Is it "Soda" or "Pop" ?

It's not an issue of which is correct. Obviously the term various depending on the geographic location.

I am not sure what you are asking. Is your question, "what do you call (carbonated, sweetened beverage)"?

This is a fascinating topic, by the way, because there are several words which go by different names, depending on which part of the U.S. are in.

The food at Starbucks-Yay or Nay?

Starbuck's is "yuppy" (sic)? Maybe 10 years ago, before coffee shops were ubiquitous, Starbucks would be seen as elite, and even that is a stretch, but I'd be curious to see what you consider yuppie.

I don't disagree about the food being too pricey for what you get, it is just your perspective on its aesthetics and overall vibe that I find puzzling.

Carolina's versus Olive and Ivy

My sentiments exactly.

At my friends' behest, I patronized Olive & Ivy several times. The servers in the dining area, on all occasions, were fine.

Sitting at the bar, however, was a different story. I've had thee different female bartenders who were equally rude and absent a lot of the time.

I don't find the food at O & I to be remarkable enough to warrant spotty service and relatively high prices.

Frustration Shopping at Albertsons

"Nothing could drive me to Safeway - I can't take the constant greeting and being asked if I need help finding things."

What bugs me is the cashier using you last name to thank you. First off, it takes way too long for he/she to figure out how to say my last name, secondly, I don't need it announced. Annoying.

That said, I refuse to patronize any Albertson's. There are never enough cashiers, the produce selection is horrendous, and the customer service is ridiculous.

I'll take Von's any day.

Most frightening food you've seen lately?

"A hot dog in another form; meat scraps & filler"

I just lost my breakfast reading this line.

The scrapple I have seen, in Central and Eastern PA, looks like a hot mess pile of mystery meat. Gee, how could I resist trying this culinary delight?

Disclosure: what makes its appearance truly disturbing is watching overweight diners shovel into their mouths, alongside their white bread toast and runny eggs.

Scrapple. What makes it disgustingly frightening, to me, is its appearance, smell, and description. The thought of it makes me shudder.
