I hear ya - my take away was to be selective - requesting crusty brisket ("We requested a sauce free second plate with crusty pieces of brisket. This is where the Salt Lick shines. The brisket had a crust like no other with deep flavor and abundant sugar cookies. The meat was smoky, tender and moist with great flavor even without the sauce.")...also snappy sausage sounded alright but refrain on the ribs...
the throwing out on a regular basis part intrigues me... (:-D

Been reading reviews with much disdain for salt lick - made me think it was living off its past glory - however reading your post made me dig into Full Custom Gospel's review - http://fcg-bbq.blogspot.com/2009/01/s... and it's kind of turning my mind around now
let us know what you think
Why doesn't it belong
I'm removing Salt Lick from the list
Goode on kirby still there - but have directly referenced and linked to the differing views here
The current list:
Looks like it depends...on when you go and what you order. Looking at the menu they do have cheaper choices for Breakfast and Lunch.
If you get there before 6 looks like they have special fish dinners(1/2 lb of seafood potatoes vegs with soup and salad) for under $15 - some may consider that a cheap eats for good seafood/fish.
Cheap Eats is hard to pin down. Yours may be different than Fred's.
Basically for me I see it in a range : From Dirt Cheap Low-Down Hole-In-The-Wall Greasy Spoon Joints Roadhouses Shacks Cafeterias Carts Cantinas Huts Lunchwagons Pubs Saloons Smokehouses Taps Taverns Trailers Trucks Honkytonks Pits Stands Shantys Taquerias Dumps and Dives To a Bit More Upscale Good Value Cheap Eats Comfort Food Restaurants BBQs Broilers Cafes Chophouses Coffee Shops Delis Diners Drive-ins Grills Inns Luncheonettes Lunchcounters Kitchens Markets Meat-And-Threes Nooks Pantrys Parlors Pizzerias Ribhouses Rotisseres Supper Clubs WhatNots WhatEvers WhatsItsnames WhatChamacallits and everything in between...
Keeping in mind that one can still eat on the cheap in places that may be considered pricey by carefully selecting cheaper dishes sharing apps salads skipping desserts expensive drinks and so on...
quite a few are favorites from the Chowhounds here.
which ones on the Chicago lists are kinda pricey to you

I concur. Not the same since Ryan left and place misses his oversight...Chen is overwhelmed. We've stopped going. Let me know please when he returns....I would recommend only going during the week . Buffet is a mistake anywhere.
How about everybody state here the ones they like - will list their name with each place - something along the lines of "An EdLagniappe approved place" like AAA approved. I recall some people like your stinkers.. Different ribs for different folks ( :-D )
Thanks to everyone for your input - Looking for further input on the current state of the Texas Map and Page at Frugal Danny and Roxanne's Texas BBQ

thank you dave & kitten - I try to write about what I know based on real life experience but I can assure you that although I have passed through some pretty dim pretty depressing low-rent downscale dives I haven't yet felt the urge to hang in dim depressing low-rent downscale dives (;=D)
