Pesco Vegetarian Friendly around Kingsway & Knight?

Aree Thai on Kingsway is super veg friendly and generally has excellent Thai food.

Room for Cream is another option for coffee on Kingsway.

Where do you go for Greek in Vancouver?

Panos Greek Taverna in south Van (on Marine Dr.) gets good reviews in terms of Greek restaurants in Vancouver. I've been once and I enjoyed it, but that was a long time ago.

Peppadews in Vancouver?

Has anyone seen peppadew peppers anywhere in Vancouver? The only place I've seen these tasty morsels is at Whole Foods/Capers, and I'm hoping to find an alternative. Thanks!

Serious coffee place in Vancouver?

According to Kafka's twitter feed, they are now also brewing with the Aeropress on request! Very interesting. Siphons are also on the way, apparently.

Maple Syrup ideas

I riffed off the maple syrup scone recipe from 101 Cookbooks and I really liked them.

I'll Never Say Never Again Again, 'Cause Here I am in Love Again

I totally relate! My Korean mother always kept a jar of dried shiitake mushrooms and my sister and I hated the smell and would be really grossed out when they would make appearances in dishes. As much as I like mushrooms, I couldn't deal with the shiitakes. I think I'm okay now though.

Pastry chef coming to Vancouver

Boulangerie Cho Pain on Davie Street near Bute makes a pretty decent croissant as far as Vancouver is concerned.

In terms of ice cream, has anyone tried Milwaukee Market Creamery on Hornby Street between Drake and Pacific? It seems to garner good reviews (on Yelp) for the frozen custard but I haven't been myself.

Hazelnut cake?

I'm looking to bake a hazelnut cake for a birthday. It does not have to be flourless, like a torte, although that would be fine as well.

I had a similar kind of cake at a bakery that was marketed as a "pralines and cream" cake - it was a soft, fluffy, nutty flavoured sponge cake with a cream frosting. It was not too sweet. I would like to find a recipe for something similar. However, it is also fine if the cake also involves chocolate in some way (one can ever go wrong with chocolate!), although I would prefer if hazelnut was the dominant flavour in the cake base.

I am fairly comfortable with baking, but the only problem is I do not own an electric mixer of any sort and I am sort of wary of using a recipe that uses beaten egg whites for lift.

I have looked at numerous recipes online and I am sure I can cobble something together, but I would really like to see any tried and true recipes you may have. Thanks!

Where to eat on Main St (Vancouver) - between Broadway and 25th

Grub on Main is a bit farther down (near 28th), but might be a nice choice. Fresh menu changes daily, with some salads/share plates/pizzas remaining constant.

Vanilla Slice in Vancouver?

If vanilla slice is the same thing as mille feuille, then it can be found at La Baguette et L'echalote (the bakery on Granville Island).

Microwave Snack Creations

I have not tried this myself, but it seems to have been received with positive reviews and I have it bookmarked for times of desperation :-)

New BBQ on Granville, Vancouver

The place is called Parta BBQ House and it is Chinese BBQ I believe. I've never been, I just know what the name is since I live in the area. Apart from one review on Yelp, there doesn't seem to be a lot of information elsewhere online..

21st Birthday Dinner

Hello to all CHers! This is my first official post, but I've been a regular lurker for the past little while. I've been drawn out of the sidelines on this occasion because I need some fresh restaurant recommendations for a special occasion.

My boyfriend's 21st birthday is coming up and I'd like to take him out for a nice dinner. I'm quite familiar with the restaurant scene in the metro Vancouver area, and, like I've mentioned, in my creeping of the boards I know which restaurants come up often as popular picks. In this case, my main criterion is that the restaurant is a little more upscale (casual fine dining) while not being such that two young people would not feel out of place.

I've entertained the thought of Trafalger's Bistro - any thoughts? Food-wise, I'm not looking for any type of cuisine in particular. Ultimately, I'm looking for great food and an unpretentious atmosphere. All input would be greatly appreciated.
