2012 South Beach Wine & Food Festival - Discounts & Tips

Hello Fellow Chowhounders,

I read on the South Beach Wine & Food Festival website that there's a Amex Cardmembers' pre-sale going on tomorrow, October 10, 2011 thru Sunday, October 23, 2011.

Amex Cardmembers will receive 15% off the purchase of a Whole Foods Market Grand Tasting Village ticket including speed line access, or a Festival Weekend Pass during the pre-sale period.

My intention of opening up this thread was to share this discount with those who are interested and to open up the discussion for other deals/ tips for purchasing discounted tickets for this years event.

A few years back, I was able to secure two tickets on Ebay to the Best of the Best for $500 (normally $350pp + tax & fees). I tried going the same route in subsequent years, but didn't have much luck. Probably due to the increased demand for tickets, events selling out, and Southern Wine & Spirits limiting the amount of tickets comp they give out.

I also remember reading about a 15% discounted rate for Miami Beach Residents a couple years back. Not sure if that still goes on?

Well, that pretty much covers everything I know regarding deals on tickets to the SOBE Wine & Food Festival. Hopefully, you guys have some additional insight and information you can share on the subject. Also, if you're planning on attending this year, please let us know which events look interesting to you.

Liquid Nitrogen

Does anyone know where I can score some liquid nitrogen and a reasonable priced storage container to hold it in? Just from reading around it seems like the container is more expensive than the LN itself. Has anyone bought some and cooked with it?

Melissa's Produce

I stumbled upon this website while I was searching the internet for fresh yuzu and thought I would share it with everyone.

According to their website, they're the largest distributor of specialty produce in the United States. With over 800 items available at any given time. After searching around a bit, I have to say that I'm really impressed by the variety of produce they carry.

Now I'm all for buying local and participating in CSA programs, but this site carries a number of items that I've been dying to get my hands on and are pretty much impossible to get fresh in Florida. (i.e. yuzu, ramps, fresno chiles, baby kiwis, etc).

Does anyone have any experience with this company they can share?

Fresh Compressed Baker's Yeast

Does anyone know where I can get fresh compressed baker's yeast from? Preferrably close to the Boca Raton area. I'm going to make the Coffee & Doughnuts recipe from the French Laundry cookbook this weekend. Thanks!

Michy's or Michael's Genuine?

Hard choice. Personally, I don't think you can go wrong with either one. Both are exceptional restaurants. Michy's Miami Spice menu is amazing and includes some of her most popular dishes for only $35. If I were you I would skip Devito's or the Restaurant at the Setai and go to both.

Official Miami Spice 2009 Thread

I have to agree with yomyb, I was at Michy's last weekend and the food was incredible! The portions were appropriate and the menu included many of her most popular items. I would definitely return again.

I’m disappointed to hear all the negative reviews about Gotham that was next on my list. I was planning on going there for my birthday the week of August. Looks like I might need to look elsewhere.

Berkshire Pork

Thanks for the info, Pikiliz! I'm hoping to find something local, but its not looking good at this point.

Berkshire Pork

Does anyone know where I can buy Berkshire pork in South Florida? I'm in the Boca Raton area and I already tried the Meating Place with no luck. I've been dying to get my hands on this for home use, but haven't had much luck finding it.. Looks like I might need to order over the internet.

Seafood Market South Florida?

Hey everyone,

Could you please help me find a respectable seafood market in the South Florida area that has sushi quality fish? I live in Boca Raton, but I would be willing to drive 30 minutes north or south.

I usually go to Whole Foods, but there stuff is pretty run-of-the-mill and I hate how they cut the tuna in steaks instead of loin pieces for searing. I've also been dying to find some head on shrimp, langosteens, prawns, or exotic crustaceans.

Thank you in advance for your guidance!

Michael's Genuine is slipping. Agree?

I'm going to have to disagree with you on this one. I was just there last Saturday and had a pretty stellar meal, besides the chocolate-coconut tart, which I found to be extremely dense and cloyingly rich. The doughnuts I had on a prior visit were much better option.

We started with the Crispy Hominy and the Tuna Tartar. Both were good - nothing mind blowing - but well executed and quite tasty.

For entrees, we ordered the Crispy Beef Cheeks and Grilled Short Ribs with Romesco Sauce. The beef cheeks were amazing; perfectly crisp and served over creamy parsnips along with a zesty mustard sauce that really helped cut the richness of the dish. The short ribs were delicious as well, but they were definitely better on my prior visit – not as charred and less crispy on this visit. However, flavors were spot on and the lemon on the side was a nice touch that really helps cut through the fat and richness of the dish.

We steered clear of the onion. I have to agree with niia that the dish is pretty bland and the onion is a little undercooked, which really upsets me because the dish has such potential. I think it would benefit by adding the apricots, mint and some of the spices at the end instead of stewing them all together until the flavors are muddled and lost.

All in all I had a great meal, even though there were a few missteps. I have to say I really respect and appreciate what Michael Schwartz is doing here. For my taste, Michael’s Genuine is one of the few solid dining experiences I’ve had down here. I’ll agree that at times it’s a little inconsistent, but all in all I’ve had a positive experience to 2 times that I’ve dined.

Fresh Ramps

Hey Hotmelly, that's awesome. I'm in Boca Raton. I tried the Upper East Side Farmer's Market on Biscayne, but they didn't have them. Can you please give me some more info on where and when I can find this truck?

Thank you so much,

Fresh Ramps

Does anyone know where I can find fresh ramps (spring onions) in South Florida? I've been thinking of hitting up some farmer's markets, but I'm not sure which ones have specialty / exotic produce.

Yuzu Tree in South Florida

Lowe's in West Boca had a Kafir Lime tree last time I was there.

Lowe's in West Boca had one last time I was there.

Yuzu Tree in South Florida

For anyone that's interested, I found a source. The Lowes in West Boca said they will have availability in Mid April.

Yuzu Tree in South Florida

Hey Everyone, I've been on a mission to find a Yuzu tree (preferably a dwarf) in the South Florida area, though I haven't had much luck at this point. Tried Home Depot, Loews, Florida Citrus Growers Association, Bloods, Nu-Turf and a bunch of online places that won't ship here due to agricultural restrictions. I'm desperate! I must have one!

Not sure where else to look at this point. Anyone have any leads or suggestions? Thanks!
