Prego new restaurant at Queensway and Royal York Good!

I've been twice to a new Italian restaurant called Prego in Etobicoke and must say it is a breath of fresh air in an area that has very few memorable restaurants. On my first visit I had grilled calamari that was tender and flavourful. It had olives and sauteed tomatoes sprinkled on top. For the main course I had a smoked chicken pasta with olives, red peppers, sun dried tomatoes and rappini in a rose sauce. Others had lobster ravioli, seafood pasta that included clams mussels crab legs shrimps and squid and another diner had pheasant sausage with a yummy risotto.
On the second visit my husband and I shared a starter(that was a main course that can be served as a starter for 2) that was shrimps and scallops in a pernod cream sauce with a puff pastry cap. It was to die for.
The wine list is a bit limited but the prices are decent. I had a glass of Italian house chardonnay for $6.50. The main courses were in the $16 to $22 dollar price range.

Grouper N Chips in Naples

I ate at Grouper and Chips aprox 1 month ago and the meal was greasy and didn't taste fresh. I thought it was just an off day.

The arrogance of the owner at Local Kitchen and Wine Bar Queen West

There was a lot of goat cheese in their dishes. Funny you should mention it.
I still can't believe how rude the co-owner was. He didn't even offer us another item to replace the pasta. My husband came home and made a sandwich!
Luckily we live in Toronto and there are lots of great places to eat!

The arrogance of the owner at Local Kitchen and Wine Bar Queen West

I have eaten at Local Kitchen and Wine Bar Several times. Tonight was busy. Over all we have found the food to be good although perhaps a tad expensive for a restaurant that does not take reservations and has a bistro type atmosphere. For one of our tapas dishes we ordered a pasta special that was Tortillini with butternut squash goat cheese and apples. It was $19 for 3 small pieces. We mentioned this to the waiter/owner who told us(in a snotty tone) it was made with all kinds of love and that if we didn't want it ...fine. He took the plate and stomped off. Outrageous. A couple beside us ordered this dish as well and said the same thing. Good but extremely over priced for the portion size. That was the end of our dinner experience. We were not offerd coffee or dessert just the full $135.00 bill. We were totally ignored. They are trendy right now and it has made them cocky.
We ate at Cowbell(a block away) last weekend where the food was amazing, portions were appropriate and the services was what one would expect when paying $150 for dinner for 2 people. By the way we had coffee and dessert. Cowbell was moderately busy and they take reservations.
It is a shame when a place has "the buzz" and customer service flys out the window....from the owner ...no less. You may want to think twice before heading out to Local. I won't be back.

Etobicoke good eats

Pulcinella at Lakeshore and Browns Line is a relatively new and very good italian bistro. Cute atmosphere(stone walls dark wood furniture and live piano playing in the downstairs dining room). The menu prices are "medium". Just be sure to ask what the price of their specials are. They seem to be disproportionately high when compared to the regular menu items.

Union Restaurant

I went to Union for dinner last night and the food was amazing! The table shared a plate of elk sliders to start...they sound weird but are they ever good. I had the pickerel special,(pan fried in butter...simple but very tasty) 2 others had the pasta special(some sort of spicy sausage combo served on paperdelle noodles) and one had the steak...(good but boring in my opinion). They brought a plate of frites and some sort of warm potato salad for the table. Both items were very good! It has a bistro atmosphere. It was noisy so keep that in mind. My one criticism would be that we waited 25 minutes for our drinks to arrive. People who arrived after us were being served first. We had to ask him where they were. The cost per person including tax and tip was $60. We did not have coffee or dessert. Overall it was very good and I would go again.

Union vs Bohmer

I guess I got lucky regarding a reservation at Union. I left a message around noon and they got back to me just after 1. Added bonus I got in on Sat. I would still love to hear from a fellow chowhounder who has eaten there.

Union vs Bohmer

Sounds yummy. I read a review that gave the Veal cheeks a thumbs up. How were the wine prices?
Have you ever been to Union?

Union vs Bohmer

We are trying to decide which one to go to. Has anyone been to both? Which one did you prefer taking into consideration food , price, ambiance
and wine selection by the glass?
Thanks!

Has anyone been to IM Tapas recently?

6 of us went to I M Tapas in Naples. When we walked in it was 2/3rds full and it smelled a bit like old seafood(which was a worry). The decor in the restaurant was warm and inviting. Our waitress came over and was very pleasant and knowledgable. We ordered a couple of bottles of wine which were reasonably priced and very good. The food was amazing. We had several of the tapas dishes starting with the warm olive dish and arugula salad. We also had the chorizo in cider, artichoke hearts with serrano and morcilla in a garlic sauce, mussels in spicy sherry and chorizio reduction, duck breast with carmelized fig and port, shrimp in garlic and the spicy octopus. Everything was delicious. If you are going to have the tapas I would recommend going with 4 or more people. That way you can have a wide selection of dishes. If this restaurant was in a major city you would have to call a week in advance to have a hope of getting a reservation. Thumbs up IM Tapas!

Silver Spoon on Roncey....thoughts?

I have eaten there several times. The owner is very nice and aims to please. He will remember you if you go again. The food is quite good. I really like the corn crusted shrimp appetizer . The duck confit is great as is the lamb. Pretty little bistro. Enjoy!

Sea Salt Naples

Six of us went to Sea Salt last night for dinner. It was ok. Nice atmosphere great service but the food did not live up to the menu descriptions. To give everyone a baseline we've been to Trulucks Roy's Campiellos and PF Chang. The food was outstanding at all 3 restaurants. Sea Salt's food was good but not outstanding. One person had butternut squash soup (delicious) others had calamari (ok) I had mussels(ok) Main courses 3 of us had salmon in limonchello with capers.(bland ...could not taste the marinade) One had surf and turf(the ravioli's were not cooked ...it tasted doughy). Two had the scallops which again were ok but lacked that special something that one expects at an expensive restaurant. We did not have desert. We all said we would not go back. Too many better restaurants in the area.
