2nd Ave deli, Sarge's Deli or Katz?

I don't usually disagree with foodwhisperer but:
"Waitress service" at Katz's?? And miss all of the total NY experience of tipping the counterman, getting a "taste" etc..
Carnegie deli is a far cry from Katz's, Sarge's and 2nd Ave in that order.

Would you say your Thanksgiving this year is going to be a big deal . Or your just going to make it simple ?

My S.O. and I are preparing a feast for her 99 year old mom!!! Family and grandchildren will join us. Giving thanks that she is still around and can enjoy the feast.
She complains that she misses driving now that she can't see all that well. I told her I'd let her drive around the hood and guide her. She just laughed!!!

Cash only gratuity allowed ... you may NOT charge the TIP to your CC.

It was just a statement of fact. Not a moral judgment.

Saturday Brunch Midtown

Or check out Sarge's Deli. Open 24/7 with great breakfast and lunch selections. It's a nice taste of NYC. Your friends can have a "pint" too.

Let's ban the word GUYS!!!

164 replies to this topic. I propose banning the ban!! People are so quick to ban something and afterward they realize the ban was way too harsh.
Passing some law banning ________ is easy. Getting the ban overturned is not so easy.
Does anyone remember the "City Horn" required in cars sold in NYC? Cars sold in NYC had a switch for city (not so loud) horn and country (loud)horn.
This ban on loud horns cost each consumer $$$$ and took forever to be overturned.

Flamenco or Marriachi (live) with dinner on Long Island

There is a restaurant in Huntington called Fado but no live music. Go figure? I love Fado.

Saturday Brunch Midtown

Please define what you mean by "Midtown." Be aware that most brunches start about 11-11:30. You might be better off with a place that serves a nice breakfast.

Tango Argentinian Steak House has live Flamenco. Check and see which nights.
I would love to find a Portugese restaurant that has live Fado but so far no luck.

Mermaid Inn or AquaGrill?

I've been to the Mermaid Inn on the UWS and loved it. They have a great selection of oysters.
Never been to AquaGrill but it gets rave reviews. Perhaps the location should help with your decision. Mermaid has three locations.
AquaGrill is my next stop for seafood.

Al Bustan

During the past 50 years or so the Yemenis have emigrated to other parts of the Middle East to seek work as laborers and household help.
Sort of like the Chinese who helped build the railroads in America.
Some of them put down roots and had influence on local customs and cuisine.

"Jerk" I.Y.H.O.
I was recently thanked by a young woman for pointing out to her weeks ago the number of times she used "Um" and "Yeah" while speaking with customers.
So, maybe in one of a thousand it sinks in and makes a small difference.

Ah! Brooklynese!
There are some phrases that just flow with such melody with a Brooklyn accent.

Let's just toss the English language and start anew. Esperanto anyone?
In our office we consider: "Yeah, huh, wha' and um" unprofessional.
"Um, Ya know, it's like, like the way we talk to our buds, ya' know!"

Enlisted men and women (not officers) know that they do all of the hard work. Officers are referred to as "Sir."

To server: "May I have a glass of water?"
"Not a problem."
"Why would it be a problem?"
Blank stare.

Let's ban "Um!" While we're at it!!
To server: "What's your name?"
"UmRene."
"OK UmRene, I'd like the rib eye special."
Blank stare.

Let's ban the word GUYS!!!

"Don't call me sir, I work for a living!" Anyone who has been in the military knows what this means.

I agree. "No problem" is banned in our office.
My response is: Why would there be a problem?

Al Bustan

Saying "Arab food" is like saying "American food." So many different regions and cuisines.
Yemeni Café is most probably authentic Yemeni which is a bit different from Syrian/Lebanese. Similar but they use some different spices and more tomato based sauces.
In the mid 70's a plentitude of Yemeni restaurants opened on or near Atlantic Ave in Brooklyn. Adnan was one place I enjoyed. They have all seemed to fade away.
Tripoli (Syrian/Lebanese) endured and is still a favorite.

Al Bustan

Friendly and "family." Open and airy.

My indicator for "authentic" is Kibbe nayeh on the menu. Al Bustan has three types. Byblos only lamb. Very authentic.

Brussel sprout stalks -- edible?

At my local farm stand the Brussel sprouts on the stalk were the same price as a pint that had been picked.
The stalk yielded at least 3 times the sprouts. It was very easy to remove the sprouts from the stalk. I played Huck Finn and said to my sweetheart: "Honey, this is so much fun. Would you like to snap off the sprouts." She was thrilled!!
I cut the larger ones into quarters and smaller ones in half. Stir fried with chopped bacon, pine nuts, spices and a drizzle of maple syrup and then roasted lightly. Yummy!!
Sorry to be so off topic but I never considered eating the stalk.

Yay, more raw milk for Long Island

I love that place and the folks who run it. Take notice of the egg sizing machine. It's got to date back 100 years.

Poutine on Long Island

Any Greek diner!! Just order "Disco Fries!" Just kidding. I could not resist.
There was a restaurant called Poutine on the LES of Manhattan but they failed.
My best guess is that people in the NY Metro area are a bit more health conscious.

Al Bustan

I love Al Bustan. Authentic Syrian/Lebanese cuisine with a nice vibe. Service is decent too.
I also love Byblos for all the same reasons. Byblos is closer to my home.
In Brooklyn Tanoreen rocks!!
