Tipping at Starbucks when buying bananas

Katz's is unique in many ways. I go with the flow. I've never noticed a difference in a non-tipper sandwich or sample.

Tipping at Starbucks when buying bananas

I don't feel a necessity to tip at Starbucks, Dunkin Donut,a C-Store or any take out place. The counter person is paid a wage that is not based on being a server and getting gratuities.
If there is a "tip" jar I'll toss in some or all of my change depending on how much it is.
I have to admit I do tip the sandwich maker at Katz's and will get a sample of the succulent pastrami being sliced.

Your automobile as dining room!

I took a trip to Lisboa in 2001 and discovered Portugese espresso (uma bica).
I bought an espresso machine and stopped drinking Café Americano at home.
A nice large double in the morning to get the heart pumping. My nickname became "Doppio!"

Best Ways to Halve and to Store Fresh Bagels?

I buy a dozen at a time at my favorite bagel shop. I also buy a dozen bialys at my favorite bialy shop. The bagel shop makes great bagels but the bialys are sub par and the bialy shop makes great bialys but sub par bialys. It makes for a nice walk about town.
As soon as I can I freeze them in a paper bag placed in a zip lock freezer bag. The night before I need one or more I'll remove and place in another zip lock in the refrigerator to defrost. By the morning they are defrosted. I wait until then to slice with a serrated bread knife. Popped in the toaster oven for a short while will bring them back to near freshness.
If you want rubber hockey pucks put them in the microwave to defrost.
Pre slicing before freezing ends up with freezer burn.

Need Italian Rec's

I don't know if it's downtown enough but I like I Trulli especially if it's warm enough to eat in the garden.
Then again, I had an amazing romantic date there last Summer. The evening ended wonderfully. Then I got an email: "Don't call me again!" Go figure? Senior dating is not easy.

Carded in our Mid 50s!

It's an ironclad policy at some places. If they card everyone then no one slips through the cracks.
I.M.H.O. it's a good policy. Why would I be offended?
If a place that is known for good drink and passable food loses their liquor license it is a disaster.

During the Summer months I'll put a couple of tea bags in the car and brew my own tea. 1 tea bag in a full water bottle + hot car + 1 Splenda = tea.

Do you hold Grudges against Restaurants? And for how long?

On the other hand I have neighbors who eat out often. I will join them on occasion.
Choosing a restaurant quickly becomes a "Novella." There are so many places that I love where they have had a "Bad Experience." Yet they want me to choose. Go figure?
They won't go to one of my favorite Middle Eastern places because the former owner did not have the proper respect for the female of the couple. I agreed that he was condescending to women but NOT the new family that bought the place. Go figure?

I would have given them a second chance to at least see if your complaint made a difference but can understand your reluctance to get bit twice.

bagelman, I'm a touchy feely guy with friends but never strangers or business associates. My limit is a friendly handshake if I am familiar with the server/host.
I'd be appalled and I am totally in your corner.

Do you hold Grudges against Restaurants? And for how long?

Yes, and for a long time.
I know it is totally illogical but I hold grudges against the location too.
If I've had a really "Bad experience" at a restaurant, especially if it's a fine (expensive) place I won't go back. I won't even go back after they have gone belly up and a new place opens. Makes no sense, I know it!!
There is not a long list of "Bad experience" places. I was a lunch regular at a local Chinese place that took my $50 bill and gave me change for a $20. When I went back they denied it.
The other place is now called Jedediah Hawkins Inn. I can't even remember what it was called when I had the "Bad experience" which was really bad. Am I nuts or what? Yes!!

Acceptable Behavior ?

Our family tradition is to never start eating until everyone arrive. Home or restaurant, it didn't matter.
It was a nice tradition except when my parents would come over for dinner and I was a little (less than an hour) late getting home from work.
I'd get home, ask my wife where they were, she'd point to the dining room. Without exaggeration they'd be sitting at the table holding a fork in one hand, a knife in the other shooting daggers from their eyes. "We waited for you!"
It was one of many personal Seinfeld moments.

Your automobile as dining room!

I've come to realize that I have had many amazing but simple meals in my car in all my years. Most while driving but for some while parked.
This is probably because I am not crazy about solo dining although many of these mobile meals have to do with staying on the road and getting to our destination.
Some are ritualistic. In other words: When I am passing Coney Island at meal time I have to stop for a couple of dogs.
My most challenging meal while driving (don't try this) was a pastrami sammich from Junior's in Brooklyn. This particular offering from Junior's was a special with succulent fatty pastrami, creamy cole slaw, deli mustard and a little Russian dressing but NOT on rye. It was special because they substitute two potato pancakes (Latkes) for the bread.
Since I was heading home and didn't need the shirt or pants I was wearing I took the challenge. Enormous fail!!!! But memorable meal.
