Al Bustan

During the past 50 years or so the Yemenis have emigrated to other parts of the Middle East to seek work as laborers and household help.
Sort of like the Chinese who helped build the railroads in America.
Some of them put down roots and had influence on local customs and cuisine.

Let's ban the word GUYS!!!

"Jerk" I.Y.H.O.
I was recently thanked by a young woman for pointing out to her weeks ago the number of times she used "Um" and "Yeah" while speaking with customers.
So, maybe in one of a thousand it sinks in and makes a small difference.

Ah! Brooklynese!
There are some phrases that just flow with such melody with a Brooklyn accent.

Let's ban the word GUYS!!!

Let's just toss the English language and start anew. Esperanto anyone?
In our office we consider: "Yeah, huh, wha' and um" unprofessional.
"Um, Ya know, it's like, like the way we talk to our buds, ya' know!"

Let's ban the word GUYS!!!

Enlisted men and women (not officers) know that they do all of the hard work. Officers are referred to as "Sir."

Let's ban the word GUYS!!!

To server: "May I have a glass of water?"
"Not a problem."
"Why would it be a problem?"
Blank stare.

Let's ban "Um!" While we're at it!!
To server: "What's your name?"
"UmRene."
"OK UmRene, I'd like the rib eye special."
Blank stare.

Let's ban the word GUYS!!!

"Don't call me sir, I work for a living!" Anyone who has been in the military knows what this means.

Let's ban the word GUYS!!!

I agree. "No problem" is banned in our office.
My response is: Why would there be a problem?

Let's ban the word GUYS!!!

In Brooklyn we say: "You'se guys!"
As in: "How you'se guys doin'!"

Al Bustan

Saying "Arab food" is like saying "American food." So many different regions and cuisines.
Yemeni Café is most probably authentic Yemeni which is a bit different from Syrian/Lebanese. Similar but they use some different spices and more tomato based sauces.
In the mid 70's a plentitude of Yemeni restaurants opened on or near Atlantic Ave in Brooklyn. Adnan was one place I enjoyed. They have all seemed to fade away.
Tripoli (Syrian/Lebanese) endured and is still a favorite.

Friendly and "family." Open and airy.

My indicator for "authentic" is Kibbe nayeh on the menu. Al Bustan has three types. Byblos only lamb. Very authentic.

Brussel sprout stalks -- edible?

At my local farm stand the Brussel sprouts on the stalk were the same price as a pint that had been picked.
The stalk yielded at least 3 times the sprouts. It was very easy to remove the sprouts from the stalk. I played Huck Finn and said to my sweetheart: "Honey, this is so much fun. Would you like to snap off the sprouts." She was thrilled!!
I cut the larger ones into quarters and smaller ones in half. Stir fried with chopped bacon, pine nuts, spices and a drizzle of maple syrup and then roasted lightly. Yummy!!
Sorry to be so off topic but I never considered eating the stalk.

Yay, more raw milk for Long Island

I love that place and the folks who run it. Take notice of the egg sizing machine. It's got to date back 100 years.

Poutine on Long Island

Any Greek diner!! Just order "Disco Fries!" Just kidding. I could not resist.
There was a restaurant called Poutine on the LES of Manhattan but they failed.
My best guess is that people in the NY Metro area are a bit more health conscious.

Al Bustan

I love Al Bustan. Authentic Syrian/Lebanese cuisine with a nice vibe. Service is decent too.
I also love Byblos for all the same reasons. Byblos is closer to my home.
In Brooklyn Tanoreen rocks!!

Yummy Lobster Rolls in NYC

I stopped at Jordan's for a lobster roll for the ride out East. Always excellent but they put nothing on the lobster. They give you tartar sauce, lemon and mayo if you like to add them.
Such nice people too!!

A broom? That explains it. My first wife left her broom when she moved out. I wondered how she got home.

Do guests' "do not eat lists" get you down?

The menu at my favorite diner is as thick as a bible!!

I feel your pain!!! It's impossible. Form an ad hoc committee!!
A Good Greek Diner is the best choice. Hah!

Do guests' "do not eat lists" get you down?

"Vegans, the Hezbollah of vegetarians!"

Do guests' "do not eat lists" get you down?

Ugh!! I cringe whenever we try to make dinner plans with J&A or J&U. Two couples we know and love.
They are peculiar eaters so we ALWAYS let them pick the restaurant. It usually takes about 5 days for them to decide after perusing the menus and several calls to the restaurants.
THEN comes the ordering ordeal: At an Italian restaurant, "is there garlic in that?". "Are the fried oysters dredged in wheat?" "Is the water filtered?" "Don't let the French fries touch my chicken." "How much salt is in the sautéed Brussel sprouts?" Oy vey!! It's a comedy routine!! Where is Alan Funt when you really need him?
At one small neighborhood Thai restaurant I felt so bad for the young server who barely spoke English. J&U had her running to the kitchen 6 times with questions she barely understood. When she came back all she said was "Yes" or No." By that time I was banging my head against the table top. This caused even more confusion to the server. Fortunately the restaurant was in their hood and we'll never be back.

housewarming gift?rude

My friend has a huge 150pp party on her farm every Columbus Day.
Knowing most people would bring wine and beer I stopped at Costco and bought paper towels and toilet paper.
Hostess: "OMG!!! How did you know?"

guests not offering to do dishes, is it rude?

Update: Great news!! Wife is now Ex-wife and anal neighbor is now Ex too!!

She did replace the two broken platters with some cheapo Pier One platters. Ugh!!
