Foodie in Montreal for 1st time .... PLEASE HELP !

Nikkori suggested some great places. Since you are coming from NYC, I would not bother with chinese or japanese food here. You get that in NYC and Montreal does not do it better. Les 400 coups, especially for dessert, is great. I would suggest Joe Beef (I really like it and David Chang says its the best restaurant on the planet). That should help you judge, depending on your POV of David Chang. Au Pied de Cochon is very Montreal and I would not miss it. Wilensky's is a classic and when I visit New York, I have fun comparing bagels and deli. For that, try either St. Viateur or Fairmount for bagels and try Schwartz's for Smoked Meat (this one fills your hole in the wall). For what its worth, I found the Bourdain episode of the Layover on Montreal covered some great places. You could use it for some inspiration. Have a nice visit.

Last-Minute Itinerary Advice

If you are really into nose-to-tail dining you may want to consider DNA. Comes from the same school as Chris Cosentino and uses alot of local stuff including Canadian wine (although I know you posted that you prefer beer). You've spread out APdC and Joe Beef. And if you're like me, when I hit NYC or other great food places, i overindulge anyway. Go for it.

Empanada Boulengerie

The empanadas from this place are alright but I would not go out of my way for them. I live in DDO and prefer to go to Empenada and Cie in Laval, much better in my opinion. I agree with you ios94, the dough is the let down here.

Trying to decide between Les 400 Coups and Joe Beef

All are excellent choices and although I prefer Joe Beef overall to 400 Coups, the desserts at 400 Coups are just fantastic. However, if you want the Montreal experience, I think APdC and Joe Beef offer the best examples. I'm a big fan of DNA and if you like snout to tail dining, I would not miss it. To me, although 400 Coups was very good, the mains the night I went were not memorable. You could consider Liverpool House instead of Joe Beef as an alternative.

Five Guys Burgers - Coming to Montreal !

from what I saw as I drove by tonight, the paper from the windows is gone and they seem set up. So ios94, you seem to be correct. They should open very soon.

Montreal QC -- Where can I find a good Polish beer in Montreal?

Stash Cafe, a Polish restaurant in Old Montreal may be able to help you out.
A quick look at their website didn't list any drinks, but you could call then and ask.

Business Dinner Recommendations

DNA is the actual name of the restaurant
CCeP is le Club Chasse et Peche.

Business Dinner Recommendations

You could add DNA to your list. Close to hotel, Canadian wine list (could be different for them) and although upscale, not to gourmet in terms of portions IMHO. But le CCeP is excellent. On your original list, all your choices are solid and would not disapoint, but I would avoid Chez Queux. La Salle a Manger does have an interesting wine list.

Alas, No Space at Au Pied de Cochon....Now What?!

The SO and I really love Joe Beef and it will be similar to APdC. It has a chalk board menu, is small and funky. I wouldn't be concerned about the Anglo comment above. I think tha refers more to the location. Garde Manger would fit the bill, but getting a reservation for this weekend will be nearly impossible. I didn't like Le Local when we went, and wouldn't really recommend. Kitchen Gallery was excellent when we went. Very Montreal-type resto. Small, market driven place.

One meal in Montreal for parents visiting for the first time.

That depends on what disabled means. The OP never said the individual was wheel chair bound.

One meal in Montreal for parents visiting for the first time.

Au pied de cochon is obvious, and could be disabled-friendly although a wheel chair may be tight. I like the Salle a Manger idea. How about DNA. Showcases local ingredients and has Canadian wines on the menu (although it can get pricey). The space is larger once inside the restaurant although they have a few steps to go up into the place but they may have another way in. Kitchen Gallery would be another idea. We had a fantastic meal there a few weeks ago and for about 35$ you can get a 3 course dinner, wine list has some excellent well priced wines too. Space can be a bit tight, but i'm sure they can place you in a good spot if you let them know. Enjoy your guests.

Best Martini in Montreal?

The bartenders at Salle a Manger made us excellent drinks and that is pretty close to le P'tit Plateau. I liked the drinks at Chien Fumant also. Both those places made excellent no alcohol drinks for my pregnant wife (not just a bloody mary hold the vodka) and nice old school cocktails for me. I bet they would make the martini you're looking for.

Visiting MTL Fathers day weekend

For old Montreal, you could try DNA although it will be more on the $$$ than $$.
I really like Brit & Chips but it can get really crowded. I second Joe Beef and APdC. We had a great meal at Kitchen Gallery recently too. That fits your budget.

Suggestions for a date?

If you want to go along the portugese lines, Cafe Ferreira may work for you. It can be pricey but they have a reduced price menu after 10pm that I think is a great value and would fall into your budget or their other place, F Bar, near PDA. I really like Pinxto as well or you could go for tapas at Tapeo.

Graduation Dinner

That's a very good question. Not sure. But if you call ahead, I'm sure they can do something for you. Let us know how you like it.

Graduation Dinner

DNA in my opinion would be an excellent choice. More upscale look and more quiet than say APDC or Joe Beef. Very interesting menu and wine options and we always have great service when we go. CCeP would be a good choice too but have't been in several years so hard for me to comment.

Montreal With 20-Something Old Son-Early June

I would skip Moishes as well. Max's suggestions are very good. Your son would probably like the atmosphere at Garde-Manger. I think it could fill your Friday night idea, but so would Chien Fumant. F Bar and Brasserie T could be good choices too. Have you considered Au Pied de Cochon. Very Montreal, lots of fun, casual place and great food.

Montreal May 2011 Visit...(need recommendations)

I have eaten several times at the restaurants from your original post except for Le Local (which I didn't find that great). CCP and APDC are excellent choices. Garde Mander is loud, but service is good and so is the food (some items have been on the miss side on some visits). Not to sure about your choice for Holder. I would have gone with Joe Beef or DNA. The last meal we had at DNA was awesome, from the service to the creativity of the dishes. Max also but some very interesting choices. Chien Fumant is a very small place on the Plateau that would be a change in scenery from the other restaurants you selected. Since poutine has become popular in NYC recently, you may want to try one in Montreal. La Banquise is the go to place. If you have the time, you could compare Schwartz's to NYC deli and either st. viateur or fairmount bagels. Let us know if you try those. Have fun trip.

Montreal hound needs comments on Paris food choices

My wife and I were in Paris last summer. We went to Au Lyonnais and while I liked it, my wife not so much. I had a liver steak which was very well prepared. We both liked the atmosphere though and they had so nice wine by the glass if that is important to you. As for quick bites, l'As du falafal on des Rosier in the Marais was excellent. You could also walk along rue Mouffettard. Several cheese shops, bakeries and wine shops to get stuff for a picnic. We also liked the bakery on ile st. louis (35 rue des Deux-Ponts) and les glace Berthillion for ice cream. By the way, we live in Montreal. Have a nice trip.

Alternatives to Piment Rouge???

I agree with the Dominion Square Tavern recos. It's a nice place, great cocktails and the food was fun and delicious. I also agree on your take of Piment Rouge. It has been getting some hype both in the print media and on this board that I don't really get.

Single Malt for a Gift

The SAQ signature store downtwon Montreal has a resonable selelction although more expensive than most stores in the US (I live in Montreal). A feature I like about the store is that you can taste several of the Single Malts that they sell. Just ask a sales person. As for the product you are looking for, I personnaly really like Lagavulin but its really heavy on the peat, so its unique and not for everyone. One bottle that I'm enjoying very much right now is Auchentoshan 21 yrs (Code SAQ : 00398776) which you can buy online from saq.com although its 150$. They have a 12 yr for 55$ but its not online. If your interested, WIne spectator had an issue recently that reviewed 50 or so bottles of scotch, talked about paring food with scotch (smoked fish for example) and most of them available are at the SAQ. Your grandfather is a lucky guy.

BEST DINING SPOTS IN VERDUN

The choices in Verdun that people have made are very good. My wife works in the area and has loved these restaurants. She really likes Su and Villa Wellington. Mas Cuisine is very good also, I can attest to that. It has a market driven cuisine. Since you will be going to Jazzfest, don't forget about some great places around the Lionel-Groulx metro stop (on the same line between downtonw and Verdun). I'm think of Joe Beef and Liverpool house. Burgundy lion can be a nice place for a beer too. Enjoy your trip.

Le Piment Rouge - review + pics

My wife and I had received a gift certificate for this place which we had never used. After seeing the La Presse article, we decided to try it. You are correct that the dining room is very nice, service was quite good (although a bit uneven when we went as many servers came to ask for drinks and if we had ordered). The food was very good. What really pissed us off though was after ordering a dish of dumplings wih peanut sauce, my wife requested extra sauce. They charged us 5$ for the extra sauce even though our bill was almost 200$ in food and drinks. Also, 30 min to wait for mains because the kitchen was understaffed shouldn't happen at a high end restaurant. We have several other excellent Chinese options in this city, I'm not sure I would return to this restaurant.

Empanadas in Montreal

I like La Chilenita very much. However, your Argentinian friend may not if you want more authentic Argentinian empanadas. I have several Argentinian friends here and they love a place up in Laval.

Empanadas Et Cie

The cheese and onion are fantastic. The only pproblem, is unlike most places, the dough is folded the same way for all fillings so sometimes it hard to know what you get if they are mixed in a box. Get them to identify them and you'll be all set.

Oysters and Clams - Questions and Suggestions

The fish place at Jean Talon market (Poissonnerie Aqua Mare) was selling oyesters that you could try on the spot for about 2$ each. You could have the calamari to get the taste out of your mouth if you don't like them. But they are delicious, in my opinion.

Five Guys Burgers - Coming to Montreal !

When you walk into a Five guys location, you order your burger, fries whatever. While its being prepared, they have boxes of peanuts in the shell around the restaurant that you can eat while you wait.

Five Guys Burgers - Coming to Montreal !

When we lived in the DC area, I thought Five Guys was great. However, they have expanded like crazy over the last few years and friends in the DC area are saying its not as good as it used to be. That said, I'll give them a try. In the US stores, the have peanuts in the shell to eat while you wait for your food. I always thought that was fun. And I would not say its expensive, its not MBrgr for sure.

looking for a great resto around place des arts for tonite any recomendations,

You could try Brasserie T.

Grapefruit Bitters

Le Lab on Rachel had several types of bitters last time I was there, although not sure the had peach. They may be able to hook you up or provide you with contact info on where they get their supply.
