Wall Street, Penn Station, Met
Thanks for these recs. What about for cheap a$$ food that's relatively decent in each of these areas? We are already spending too much money for this trip, so even though I would rather just go to NYC to eat, the Opera and hotel is running us up, so I guess I'll have to settle for a good pizza, burger, etc. Any thoughts on really cheap places near Wall St, Penn Station & Lincoln Center?
Wall Street, Penn Station, Met
I am travelling to NYC from Boston this weekend and need some food suggestions. I will be travelling with my girlfriend and her father who has diabetes so I'd like to know easy places to eat at in advance. I'm looking for suggestions near Penn Station, Wall Street(bear in mind it's the weekend), and something near the Met. We are seeing an opera, I believe at 1pm. Nothing too fancy or too hard to get into is prefered, any genre, any meal (b,l,d). I might be in need of a cocktail, so if they sell booze, bonus points. We are staying near Wall Street, so that would be the place I need the most help with. I'm chowish, but they are easier to please, so something not too dreadful to me would be wonderful.
Craigie on Main- Recent Faves?
pigs tails and grilled octopus were the food highlights for me. Especially the pigs tails. I didn't find the burger over-the-top special, although it gets much love by folks here. I had a Ron Zacapa 23yr rum old fashioned with some kind of chocolate bitters...very very good with giant ice cube. I really loved that cocktail.
Are you drinking anything special on St Patrick's Day?
Tipperary: 2oz Black Bush Whiskey, 0.75oz Antica Formula, 0.5oz.Green Chartreuse. Stir with ice. Yum.
where to get coffee (and what brand) if you're on a budget?
I agree with the 8 o'clock....Market Basket sells it under their name in 2lb bags for 9.99. Very good deal to me. That's whole beans, too.
Mulan take out: need recommendations
Yeah....I see that. I'm wondering if some of these travel better than others for the take-out aspect of this. It seems most of the folks were dining in.
Mulan take out: need recommendations
I'm headed there after work tonight to get some take out. I hear portions are large. I was going to order 3 or 4 items. Can you all steer me in the right direction? What have you had there recently that is good?
How do YOU roast a chicken?
The pre-salting is my favorite method. I shoot for 2-3 days if I'm organized, and I don't use a cast iron skillet, but keep the temp high. I line a roasting pan with tin foil, then a layer of parchment so it flips without breaking the skin. I just ate some for lunch today....the best.
Do you peel towards or away?
toward.....Jacques Pepin once commented on his show that when he was an apprentice his chef would kick him in the butt if he peeled away...
Splitting a Live Lobster ... HELP!!!
I did this once for Jacques Pepin's recipe for lobster fricasee.....I felt like i was in a battle...It was very stressful. I said I wouldn't do it again...because of the involuntary moving even after you cut it up..ugh...
That being said...I heard that if you stick it in the freezer I think for about 30 minutes...that'll do the trick. So I still might do it someday, but the first time definitely scarred me emotionally.
Boston to Midcoast Maine...interesting stops along the way?
Yes, I'm a born n' raised Mainiac living in Boston doing the tourist thing because I've spent zero time in the Midcoast area. While I'm sure the jerk chicken is great, I'm looking for seafood, raw oysters in particular. I forget how I stumbled upon King Eider's but it somehow drew me in. Although if another place has a better raw bar, or seafood selection, I'm down with that.
Boston to Midcoast Maine...interesting stops along the way?
What are your thoughts on King Eider's Pub? Ice cream at Round Top or Pie at Moody's Diner(which I've never been to)?
Boston to Midcoast Maine...interesting stops along the way?
I'm willing to go off Rt. 1 for something very good/interesting, but mostly just wondering about Rt. 1. I was thinking of stopping in Damariscotta for lunch.
Oyster happy hour in Midcoast Maine?
Are there any places that serve up dollar oysters in the area?
Boston to Midcoast Maine...interesting stops along the way?
Headed to Rockland, ME for the long weekend and am hoping to get some suggestions for food/sights along the way. I'm going to go up 95 to Brunswick, then go coastal. I'm interested in coastal recs (not Portland/Brunswick stuff). I'm staying at a B&B in Rockland, and have reservations for Sat. night at Primo. Looking for both high and low end establishments of any genre. Damariscotta oysers anywhere or other good seafood places? Shacks, etc. Also, any good cocktail or microbrew places?
Thanks much!

Looking for an upscale, white-tablecloth Indian restaurant
I'm not sure what Masala Art is like now (Needham), but it seemed a bit upscale and good a few years ago. I haven't been since then though.

What to stuff when grapeleaves are out of season?
Collards are even better than the grape leaves. Tastier and less stringy.
what to do with country style pork ribs?
Yes, the slow cooker is perfect. I make dry garlic spareribs...brown them, then mix some water and brown sugar, ground mustard, soy sauce with a bit of cornstarch and a ton of minced garlic. This is one of the ways the Chinese restaurants in New Brunswick, Canada prepare their pork.
I tried something new this morning...for the sauce i used roasted cherry tomatoes, and a roasted tomatillo sauce(onions, garlic, chilis, cilantro). I will find out tonight if it's any good...How could it not?
Viking Mixer in the area
Is there any local store that sells Viking kitchen mixers? Most places have kitchen aid mixers, but I'm looking for a Viking and would rather not buy online.
Le Creuset
actually, I just made the no-knead bread, which calls for a preheat at 470. I did it at 450 and my red dutch oven turned almost a maroon color. A definitive color change. However, as it cooled, it returned to its original red color.
Somerville Winter Farmer's Market
So, do you know why there was a huge representation of Florida produce? I thought what defined a farmer's market vs. let's say Haymarket, was that a farmer's market sold local items...am I wrong?

Somerville Winter Farmer's Market
I stopped in to check it out. It was packed, which is great. But...what the heck was all the produce from Florida doing there???? Which would be fine, I suppose, if it were a small stand of citrus, but it took up such a huge space. Aren't there any local people who could take their spot instead. I can go to a grocery store for Florida produce, no?
Cooks Illustrated's Pursuit of Blogger [Split from Home Cooking]
ugh....I hate how these "folks" are such bullies(reminiscent of Percy Schmeiser and Monsanto)..... I think the CI lady was being very passive aggressive, so to those saying she was nice, well we have a different interpretation. I have both CI and CC magazines and will not renew. Although I do like the back-cover illustrations quite a bit. Plus I had the unfortunate experience of seeing a certain someone on a cozy "business" dinner in Cambridge recently. I don't think touching your dining companion's face and hair are things that I would do with my co-workers....unless it was mistaken identity. Maybe it wasn't him, but his evil twin.

No, I don't think an off night due to a stah... I've found that issue there before. I swear to god, one time the guy clearing off tables grabbed a fork out of my dining companion's hand. No exaggeration.
No, not Flay... more of a new england nerd guy.

Had a nice meal there last night, but I find that they literally take the fork/plate/etc. away from you before you are finished with it. I wish they could just let you eat your meal without doing this. Plus I was distracted (in a bad way) by a famous cooking show host who obviously was on a date with a brunette who did not look like his wife. Too bad, because the food was delicious.
Has anyone else a problem there with hyper-eager table-clearing service?
Davis Square's "Foundry on Elm"
I went this past weekend. I had the calamari and the poutine. I also had cold curds in the poutine. I'm not sure why they can't keep the cheese out at RT before throwing them on the orders. Too bad because I loved the peppery gravy. I loved the basil sauce that the calamari came with, but there wasn't enough sauce to finish up the calamaris with. I had some of the classic cocktails. They were okay, but not as balanced as I was hoping for. They tasted watery even though there was plenty of booze added.
The chairs at the bar are very comfortable. I'll certainly go again.
Brunellos in Winter Hill
Just wanted to post a message saying how much I enjoyed by meal there last night. Homemade bread, homemade pasta, deliciously thick cut of filet mignon, perfectly seared scallops, veal marsala. So very good. We loved it and will be back soon. The service was wonderful and the meal was delicious. Too bad that it was fairly empty.
Help: Need to cook and freeze veggies from CSA today
ratatouille freezes very well. The carrots will last weeks in the fridge. Arugula pesto will freeze well. Blanche and freeze corn.
