Best Shabu Shabu?

I went to Shabu Zen in Chinatown years ago and liked it, but am wondering if Kaze is better? Or the Shabu Zen in Allston (from this board, it doesn't seem like it but I thought I'd check again...) Are there any other Shabu Shabu options in the Greater Boston area?

Is City Table in Back Bay any good?

I'll revive this post with the same question-- the menu looks decent yet I don't know anyone who has gone here. Does anyone know anything about this place?

Clink-- not worth the money

I know it's not new, but I only just recently ate at Clink. And I was not sorry that it took me this long. Lots of $$ for a mediocre/dull meal = thumbs down.

Started with the $25 charcuterie plate, shared with a friend. To be fair, the meat was good-- some prosciutto, lomo, chorizo, salami, , coppa, country paté. It was served with a grape mostard, which was fine, but didn't add much to the meat, and 3 breadsticks. I was glad I still had bread leftover from the bread basket they brought earlier, otherwise, it would have just been too much meat. As it was, it could have used some other accompaniments besides the mostard-- maybe some mustard and cornichons for the pate? Something else crunchy or vinegary to break up the rest of the fatty meats. Also, it was way too much meat for 2 people-- would have appreciated the waiter mentioning this.

I then ordered a $9 pea soup appetizer that was supposed to contain smoked flounder. I say "supposed" to, because there was literally a flake of flounder in there; if I wasn't looking for it in the bowl I would have missed it completely. The pea soup itself was fine but nothing to write home about (esp. when compared to the spring pea soup with parmesan at Market right now) Even more disappointing was a $9 side of pasta shells with cheese and smoked truffle salt. It was shells with butter and parm and if there was truffle salt on there, I couldn't taste it. $9 for either of these dishes was a ridiculous amount. I don't mind paying for food if it is worth it, but this wasn't.

My friend enjoyed her pappardelle with lamb ragu, which did look good. I definitely could have just ordered wrong; I'm sure there were better dishes on the menu. But $9 for a side portion of pasta with butter and parm? Not worth it...

June 2011 Openings and Closings

Thanks for posting about this, I am excited to try (and just complained in another post about the lack of restaurants in Newton, so was even happier to find this post!)

Christina's European Bistro Newton?

Just drove by it on Walnut Street, near O'Hara's, where a Dunkin' Donuts used to be. Looks like it is opening soon, does anyone know anything about it? It would be nice to have another option in Newton, which has a surprising dearth of restaurants compared to surrounding suburbs (IMHO).

A little love for Lineage

Agreed-- I had been wanting to go for a long time and just made it there last month. All 4 of us had a great meal, from apps to mains. Re: the average diner's age there-- it actually seemed mixed when we were there. We were a group in our mid-30s and there were certainly several groups older than us, a couple younger, and some around our same age. Fresh, creative food, good service-- we'll go back.

recs for child-friendly battery park city restaurants?

Thanks!!

recs for child-friendly battery park city restaurants?

Thank you, that is very helpful!!!

recs for child-friendly battery park city restaurants?

this might be too tall of an order, but i'm looking for a restaurant to go on a sat. night with my hubby and 6 month old near the embassy suites in battery park (100 north end ave)-- i don't know this area at all, (i'm a boston chowhounder) we will be staying there for a wedding.

would like to keep the cost moderate-- entrees in the low to mid $20 range? i find that loud places are good with the infant, so any place that is loud or kid friendly while yummy would be appreciated! open to all types of food.

Lord Hobo

Well, we went last night and the new chef needs to work on food temp issues.

My "warm" raclette, apple arugula and ham sandwich wasn't even tepid, the inside was cold...and it would have been a lot tastier if it was warm (I was picturing something more along the lines of Audubon Circle's hot pressed brie and apple sandwich). My DC's potatoes on top of his shepherd's pie were also cold. Otherwise, we did have a good time, the service was great and the beer and cocktails were great. Fun atmosphere, and since the food wasn't crazy expensive I wasn't too annoyed. But I'm not sure I'd go there again for food...

Low-key, cheap Valentine's Day Recs?

mmmm....haven't been to Vinny's at Night in forever, good idea!

Low-key, cheap Valentine's Day Recs?

Looking for a good place to go for V day, in Boston, Cambridge, Somerville, JP-- I'm pretty open to location. I'd like it to be on the cheaper side, and laid back, nothing fancy or with a specific V-day menu. Last year we went to Picco which was great, and I'd actually be open to going there again but I thought I'd ask the board for recs.

providence must eats? (besides al forno)

going for a weekend to providence-- where should i go besides al forno (which i have been to and love!) ? someone mentioned julian's to me- i was thinking of going for breakfast? any other ideas?

where to go for 35th bday celebration for 6 people?

sunday night, entrees in the low $20s....

where to go for 35th bday celebration for 6 people?

anywhere in boston, cambridge etc....can't be too pricey, but still has to be nice and festive enough to celebrate a birthday. i'm just blanking on ideas...

Board favorite restaurant veggie burgers?

River Gods.

Spring 2009 Openings and Closings

Would you say it is a family-friendly place then? Always looking for good food I can bring the kids to...

Spring 2009 Openings and Closings

I just drove by Citrio in Newton Highlands and noticed it is now called Bread and Lily. Anyone know when this happened? I liked Citrio, I hope this new place is as good...

Why is Thai food in boston so bad?

Has anyone been to Thai Thai Kitchen in Newton Center? I've driven by and am intrigued...seen a few good reviews in the paper as well but am curious what Chowhounders think....

good rye bread?

Since the Diamond Bakery in Newton closed, there is a serious dearth of good Jewish rye with sissel (caraway) seeds. I'm not even sure that the Diamond's was that good, but at least I knew where to get it. For a while, Whole Foods was carrying a great brand called Rudi's, but they seem to have stopped carrying it.

Anyone have any good suggestions?

Olecito?

Anybody been recently? There were some posts from May about it that seemed so-so. Is it worth going? If so, what should I get?

Anyone tried Citrio in Newton Highlands?

Just had some nice tarts/pies at a friend's house that were from Citrio-- a cherry peach (I think) and an apple. Very tasty.

boysenberries?

Is it possible to get fresh boysenberries around here? I remember eating boysenberry yogurt as a kid, but it recently occurred to me that I don't think I've ever eaten or seen a fresh one...

Estragon

Sounds great- I'm planning to go next week and glad to have all these recommendations. One question- what's the deal with parking there? Is it just street parking?

Good restaurant for veggies and carnivores alike?

I'm looking for something for Saturday night-- something casual and not too expensive for 4 people. Cambridge, Somerville, Boston all acceptable locations. Any ideas?

Wedding cake designers in the Boston area?

I'll "third" the rec for Icing on the Cake-- not only do the cakes taste great but people there are creative and really easy to work with.I also second the comment above about Konditor Meister...cakes are not very good.

Grass-Fed Burgers in Boston/Cambridge/Somerville?

I'm not 100% sure but I think that Garden at the Cellar may have them...I would call and ask though.

Is O Ya worth it?

Absolutely. I've been twice within a time span of about 3 months, and it was worth every penny. I'm generally not a fan of places where one ends up hungry after going, but O Ya succeeds because every bite is so exquisite that somehow you end up feeling sated even if you didn't eat a ton. In fact, I would argue that less is actually more in this case, and that if each dish came in larger portions, it wouldn't actually end up tasting as good...palate fatigue, I suppose? I probably won't be going again for a while, because it does practically require a second mortgage on one's house to dine there, but I will dream of it until I can afford to go again.

Really Delicious Salad at ESK

Good to hear-- I am a huge fan of ESK but haven't been recently and was wondering if it is still good, as I have heard some negative things about it. Did you eat anything else?
