Urasawa Liquor Policies

Just so you know, you can't bring any hard liquor into a restaurant like you would wine. Bringing wine is different in that the restaurant may not carry the bottle you have b/c of vintage or point of origin, but the view is that distilled spirits are enough alike that you can get a reasonable substitution, in addition to being hard liquor.

What's the deal with Wine Expo?

I've been a customer of them for 15 years and have never had a bad recommendation from them. I always refer other wine lovers to them. The one thing that I didn't see mentioned was the fact that the guys go to VinItaly and other wine conventions and personally meet the labels' producers. They want to give recognition and sales to those vintners who make great wine but don't have Mondavi's marketing budget. I think the radio metaphor is apt. some people like Top 40, others like KCRW.

Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives

I had the biscuits and gravy at the Nickel Diner in January and was totally put off by the cloyingly sweet gravy. They told me the chef used chicken and apple sausage for the gravy. ??????? Then I told them he's never tasted the gravy himself since he would know how badly it tasted, don't get too cheffy with the recipe and to go back to regular pork sausage for the gravy. Have they changed the B&G since then?

best restaurant/coffee shop/bar to write at

Joxer Daly's in Culver City would be a good choice. I go there to read a book or bunch of newspapers. Get a booth, order from the menu with a beer or soda and you're good for a couple of hours. Hit the end of lunch rush and stay as long as you like. You can be loud, it's a bar. It empties out after lunch so you'll have place almost to yourselves. I don't know if htey have wifi, I don't care since email is the last thing on my mind when I'm there. You won't find writerly types there either. It's on Washington blvd just east of Sepulveda.

Biscuits and gravy

I hear ya, Tari, nothing soaks up the previous evening's imbibing/fillls you up better than some B&G and hot sauce. That's how I came to love them in college

Biscuits and gravy

Thanks for the prior thread, I did a search and that did not come up. And I guess Dommy and I have dissimilar tastes when it comes to Nickel Diner's B&G. I shall have to try Pann's since they are in vicinity. Not impressed with O'Groat's or Snug Harbor's either.

The one part of that thread about adding nearly frozen butter chips to flour is so true; the flakiest layers ever.

Biscuits and gravy

Anyplace in Los Angeles that serves good biscuits and gravy? I mean GOOD flaky biscuits smothered in savory sausage gravy, not an LA chef version. Ate at Nickel Diner this past week and tried theirs. Chicken and apple sausage(?WTF!) over what looked more like cornbread than biscuits. The apple made the gravy cloyingly sweet and almost inedible.

I went to college in the boonies in the South where local places made everything from scratch so I know of what I speak. Any recomendations would be appreciated, thanks.
