Family fare in Stratford

York Street Kitchen is not gone, they moved to Erie Street. It's a tiny location but they have a patio and take-out. Their landlord kicked them out of the other location.

Whitby/Durham restaurants that don't suck

Moving to the area (courtice) and looking for a good Sushi restaurant. I don't want AYCE, but fresh, well prepared sushi. Sounds like Zen and Kobo are my picks. Can someone tell me where Zen is located?

Would either of these restaurants be appropriate to bring a toddler to?

Cambridge country inn?

I agree with millygirl...I've been several times (live 10 min away) and have always been underwhelmed.

Where to eat near Courtice

We are moving from Kitchener (though we moved here from TO). I must say the food scene in Kitchener Waterloo has improved greatly in the last 7 yrs. I'm going to miss all of the great dining options, not to mention the choice of farmers' markets, butchers, bakeries, and gourmet food stores. We also have a great 100 mile store where you place your order from a huge list of local foods for weekly pickup.

So sad to be leaving. Hopefully Durham will start to improve in the years to come.

Where to eat near Courtice

Thanks for the suggestions fifthglen. I have to say the Thai Hotspot menu looks a little confusing - thai, vietnamese, japanese, and chinese. :) Why do places feel that have to do it all instead of doing one well?

I searched through your previous posts and got some other great ideas. Thanks!

Thanks to all of you. They are great recommendations. Please feel free to share any other ideas you have.

Zucchini flowers?

It's still a little early. When they're ready you'll be able to find them at the farmers' markets that have local producers (ie. Brickworks).

Where to eat near Courtice

I'm moving to Courtice Ontario in June (located between Oshawa and Bowmanville) and am in desperate need to find places to eat.I need it all: breakfast, sushi, thai, delivery, etc.

I also need to know where to shop for my food other than the grocery chains. Where are the butchers, seafood mongers, cheese shops, etc. I love to buy local and get my food as direct from the producer as a possible.

All recommendations are welcome. I fear I am moving to an area that will force me into chain restaurants.

Thanks

Is this place still open? Their website is 7 months out of date.

Marca Restaurant in Whitby

Good to know. I'll be moving to the area in the spring and have been depressed by the the lack of quality restaurants in the area. I look forward to trying!

Any romantic restaurants located in waterloo or kitchener?

I would add Verses - located in a former church with high end food. I also like Bhima's Warung. They have fabulous south east asian food that's great for sharing. This is our go to restaurant when we want good food with a romantic atmosphere.

Paese or Tutti Matti

Thanks everyone. We ended up at Paese and really enjoyed it. I agree it is basic Italian food, but it was really good food. I had the caprese salad to start and it was so fresh and clean tasting. Just the right amount of salt to bring out the flavours. My DH had the octopus and it was fabulous. I was surprised how tender it was and it had a spicy kick to it.

For mains, DH and friend had the veal ravioli with butter sage sauce. It was nice but the sage was not very noticeable. Other friend had the veal scallopini and he seemed to really enjoy. I had the ricotta gnocchi and devoured every bite! They were so light and the sauce was so creamy. Though I did find the chunks of chicken a little off putting.

We shared the chocolate cake with hazelnuts for dessert and it was wonderful.

The Sommelier was a little disappointing. He didn't really engage us in a dialogue when we asked for his opinion. Our friend mentioned one he was thinking of and the Sommelier responded "sure". In fairness he did bring another bottle to the table as a suggestion along with the one we ordered. I think we ended up selecting the other option and was very nice.

Overall it was an enjoyable experience and I would be happy to recommend and visit again.

Paese or Tutti Matti

Coming into the city for dinner with friends. Trying to decide between Paese (King St.) or Tuttie Matti for dinner. There will be four of us and we are looking for good food, relaxing atmosphere, and fair prices.

What would your choice be?
Thanks.

Leftover pierogi filling?

What about using it as a ravioli filling. Buy fresh lasagne noodles and make a yummy sauce - maybe butter sage sauce or a nice rose. Yummy.

Charbries has closed. Apparently there is a sign on the door that says as of July 14, they will be closed. It comes as a surprise to many. Not that I will miss this restaurant, but I wonder what happened.

I haven't personally tried it, but I hear that El Rinconsito Mexicano in Cambridge (21 Ainslie Street) is suppose to be good.

I tried My Thai in uptown Waterloo yesterday for lunch and quite enjoyed it. I had the lunch special of pad thai with a spring roll. This is one of the few pad thai in the area that I enjoy.

I also noticed yesterday that a new fish and chip place is going to be opening. It's called "ish & chips".

Hog Tails BBQ in Waterloo...has anybody tried it?

So...I tried this place for lunch today. I had the pulled pork sandwich and cornbread.

I've definitely had better, but I've also had worse. The pork was juicy and not fatty, but it lacked the nice smokey flavour. The bun was soft (like a grocery store bun) and absorbed the sauce. I prefer a bun with more substance.

The coleslaw was mayo based and extremely salted. I ended up putting it on my sandwich since I couldn't eat it straight.

The cornbread was cold, hard and dry. I don't recommend.

I wouldn't race back, but if you have a craving for BBQ, this is really your only option in the area and may satisfy the craving.

Hog Tails BBQ in Waterloo...has anybody tried it?

I personally haven't, but my husband will often go for lunch. He says it's okay. Nothing spectaular, by far not the best BBQ he's ever had, but it will satisfy a craving.

That being said, BBQ is a very personal preference.

Kitchener/Waterloo

I have to say I had one experience with Marcelo's and I will never be back. We went in on a weeknight for dinner and they didn't seem to know how to handle a walk in. There was only one other couple in the restaurant, so finding a table wasn't an issue but we almost walked out thinking they couldn't accomodate us!

We had two servers the whole evening. One had a very awkward presence and would linger at your table for a a few seconds to long after you placed an order or when she dropped something off. I'm not sure what she was expecting us to say or do beyond "thank you".

The other server had so much perfume on that I could taste it. Not appealing when she is bringing you food. And each time she would walk by the scent would linger for a while ruining the taste of whatever I was eating.

I don't remember what we had to eat. I think it was okay, but not exeptional. Not good enough to bring me back.

Interestingly enough friends of our went there months later and had a very similar experience.

rec's for St Jacob's this weekend?

I use to to love the market, but sadly, St. Jacobs is being taken over by many distributors and and not growers. Corn and cherries are the same ones your grocery store would pick up at the Food Terminal and they are anything but local. Pretty much the only thing in season right now is asparagus. It also makes me mad to see imports available when local items are are season. The market should ban sellers from doing that.

I tend to visit the local butchers in the surrounding area, far superior product and often cheaper.

Patio in Guelph - Monday night dinner

I need a restaurant in Guelph that has a nice patio and is open for dinner on Monday nights. I was thinking Artisinale (I know the debate on this board about this restaurant), but it fit the bill - quiet patio and decent food. But alas, they are not open on Mondays for dinner.

Thanks

Big Ragu - Still good for a big birthday dinner?

I was there late last year and was not impressed. I had the gnocchi with mixed mushroom, gorgonzola and a Jack Daniel cream. The gnocchi was like glue, you could not distinguish one dumpling from another. The Jack Daniels was so strong it was as if they poured it on at the end. I barely got through a quarter of this dish. Worst gnocchi I've ever had!

ISO Indian Candy

The cavier guy located downstairs in the SLM. God I love that stuff!
