Light Rail!
With light rail opened up, those of us who work downtown now have an easier and quicker time getting to places like Beacon Hill, Columbia City, and Rainier Beach for lunch. What places near the light rail stations should I be checking out for the first time?

Yakima, Tri-Cities, Walla Walla -- But Particularly Yakima
We're making a Walla Walla wine run from Seattle this weekend. I'm primarily looking for a great place in Yakima for dinner, as I think that's where we'll be dinner-hungry given our departure time (3:30). But I'd be delighted to get any recommendations. Seriously, any recs, ranging from Taco Truck to Fancy.
Speaking of Taco Trucks, there is one out at the Walla Walla Airport each year for Spring Release near the Tamarack winery. Does anyone know where that particular taco truck goes during the rest of the year? It's the best food in the universe.
Harvest Vine tonight--what to order?
I've heard great things about Harvest Vine, and I'm going there tonight for a business dinner. Any suggestions?
wherein we discuss fine submarine sammiches
Tubs Subs, on Lake City Way. I order the Brooklyn.
Pike Place Market Cheese Festival
We went at about 11:00 last year, and it was just miserable. So crowded you could hardly get to the cheese. I'd go as early as you can. The cheese was great, though. And I'm going to bring water this time, because the cheese dries your mouth out in no time, making it hard to enjoy.
What to make with my scallops in mushroom sauce...
If you were to make this -- http://www.epicurious.com/recipes/recipe_views/printer_friendly/233261 -- what would you make with it?
Breakfast in U District
third Portage Bay. The bacon I ate there was the best bacon I've had in my life. It had this great crust on the outside.
pork tenderloin, in a salad?
We grilled up a spice-rubbed pork tenderloin last night, and have about four inches of it left. My SO suggested that we slice up the leftovers thin and put them in a salad. Which has me thinking, what else would go in such a salad. Ideas?
Seattle Convention Center (7th and Pike) Quick Lunch under $10?
If you go to Bambuza and you're looking for a cheap lunch that will make you happy, don't go in on the main entrance. They have a side door where you can get little Vietnamese sandwiches (Banh mi?) that will just make your day. I think they're $3 or $3.5 each. If you're a big eater, grab one or two of those, and then walk across the street and west toward the little crepe stand. I've been working in this area for a bit over a year, and I think that's the best you can possibly do for an under $10 lunch.
A close second--and yes, better than Baguette Box--is the Other Coast Cafe in Two Union. Order a six inch "Ragin Cajun". The six inch is about 8 inches long, very filling, and crammed full of goodness.
Espresso + Comfort + Privacy in Downtown Seattle
Cherry Street fits the bill very nicely, thanks!
Espresso + Comfort + Privacy in Downtown Seattle
Looking for a new best place to have our weekly coffee, and have some very specific paramaters:
1) The espresso must be really really good.
2) There must be comfortable seating for 3.
3) The seating must be private enough that you can have a conversation at a normal volume and not feel like the people at the next table can overhear you, but not so loud that you have to yell to be heard.
4) It must be short walking distance of 6th and University. Belltown is too far, International District is too far. Pioneer Square is borderline.
We used to be extremely happy with the Juan Valdez on 5th and James, but it closed down. Help me Chowhounds, you're my only hope!
Chow in Lake City
Recently moved to this area, and have been most happy with LC's Kitchen (Lake City Way and 80thish) and Saltoro (140thish and Greenwood). If you do LC's, I would recommend takeout. Am also addicted to the Won Ton soup at Chang Thai, which we usually order with the "Mix Appetizer".
Downtown Seattle--Not ID--Wonton Soup
Have had a craving for wonton soup. Want it for lunch in Downtown Seattle. No time to get to the ID.
Where to go?
SEA: LC's Kitchen in Lake City/Roosevelt
I went back the next day :) Couldn't agree more with you about the "decor". But we had the stew mentioned above and a tilapia - both made us very happy.
SEA: LC's Kitchen in Lake City/Roosevelt
I checked this place out on the strength of this posting, yesterday, and I completely agree. Had a platter of mozz, sun dried tomatoes, olives, roasted red peppers, and grilled bread that was really tasty. Came with a salad that had a "tomato jalapeno" vinaigrette (which I thought sounded gross but will order again and again). Then we also had a tortellini with a creamy sauce, squash, and caramelized onions. All of this food only cost me $22.
Thanks for the great recommendation.
Just got braces and EVERYTHING hurts, need ideas for softer foods...
what exactly is congee?
Just got braces and EVERYTHING hurts, need ideas for softer foods...
I'm told my teeth will hurt for the next few days. Tried fried tofu, and even that was a bit much. I food processed some Tom Yum soup. The texture was terrible, but it didn't hurt. Any better ideas?
Why were my seared scallops so terrible?
Then I'm assuming clarified butter would also work?
Why were my seared scallops so terrible?
I'm assuming a nonstick pan is what I'll need. What kind of fat?
Why were my seared scallops so terrible?
Good idea! But I didn't realize you could leave seafood out for that long. Do you put it in the fridge? If not, do you know the outer limit for how long you can leave seafood out?
Why were my seared scallops so terrible?
So I made this (http://www.epicurious.com/recipes/recipe_views/views/230929) on Friday. My first, and hopefully worst, attempt at searing scallops. When I first put them in, so much water came out that they didn't get any type of texture. Then, I took them out and did each one individually on the other side. That got a nice texture. But when I ate them, the crust tasted like pure salt. I had to cut off the crust to get anything edible. What did I do wrong? What are the secrets to searing scallops?
Left Over Taco Meat -- What to Make
It must be from Cooks, because I got it off America's Test Kitchen. I LOVED the tacos. I think making the shells is the best part of it. Just be careful not to overcook, because you need them somewhat malleable to get all the tasty business in there.
Left Over Taco Meat -- What to Make
Let's see...
1 small onion , chopped small (about 2/3 cup)
3 medium cloves garlic , minced or pressed through garlic press (about 1 tablespoon)
2 tablespoons chili powder
1 teaspoon ground cumin
1 teaspoon ground coriander
1/2 teaspoon dried oregano
1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper
table salt
1/2 cup tomato sauce
1/2 cup low-sodium chicken broth
1 teaspoon brown sugar
2 teaspoons vinegar (preferably cider vinegar)
Ground black pepper
Left Over Taco Meat -- What to Make
Made some mean tacos last night, but have about two cups of seasoned hamburger leftover. Other than tacos, what am I eating tonight?
