Seriously good food in a new style in Rock Hall, Maryland
Hi All,
We did go back by for breakfast.
The scones are amazing. Light crunchy, flavorful!
My wife had one with coffee.
I ordered a breakfast sandwich of scrambled eggs on Rye toast with bacon. The toast is a really rich bread, quite wonderful. The eggs perfectly done and in the meantime more great conversation with the couple who own, run and do all the cooking.
We had to leave just as they were preparing for two NYE seatings of what sounded like another great meal at The Kitchen!
If you're within a couple hours drive, you must!
Sadly, I'm almost 5 hours away!
Try it!
We hope to be back in the summer...
Seriously good food in a new style in Rock Hall, Maryland
Hi All,
Just spent a few days in delightful Rock Hall, Maryland. Had some good food at Ford's and Waterman's Crab House...
Don't want to pit local places against each other but there is a special place that opened last spring-The Kitchen.
A couple of software engineers from the DC area have relocated bringing an amazing love of people, food and cooking to this corner of The Eastern Shore.
While many, many sources say that Waterman's is the place on the Eastern Shore for Crab and that might be true for the old style crab boil/pot...
The Kitchen features crab in many ways and some surprising and delightful twists on the older style of cooking. One favorite from the menu is an Eggs Chesapeake featuring crab.
One example of one of their takes on new style cooking is a wonderful portion of Rock Fish over rice, with shrimp, asparagus and an "Asian Style" broth. Ah.
My wife had an appetizer of wonderfully pan fried oysters (from North Carolina) with a wonderful remoulade sauce and then the slow cooked and so tender Lamb Shanks over Polenta.
We followed these dishes with their wonderful Chocolate Bread Pudding with White Chocolate Sauce.
Sadly we have to leave here early on Saturday, New Year's Eve... Even so we're stopping by The Kitchen for one of her scones and some coffee!
Whatever is featured on the day you visit, there is a great wine list of by the glass and bottle selections.
Prices are totally fair for the fare.
Their "website" bare but pithy: http://www.thekitchenatrockhall.com/

No published menu yet. As she says "It's under construction"
Right now, breakfasts featuring homemade biscuits. A star at lunch is what they are calling a New Jersey Cheese Steak which features pepper jack cheese. As soon as they get a menu up online. I"ll be happy to share it. They are closed Oct 23-25 for more remodeling. Reopen on Oct. 25 early am.

Hi,
I thought the thread was New Jersey and I tried to post a link to their FB page which shows it is in South Orange on Irvington Ave. I don't know how I left off all that key info. My apologies,

Great Eats in/near Atlanta
Bob,
That's what was so outrageous: Rocks: $2.00
What's next? Salt, Pepper, Napkins, Fork, Knife, etc.........
Makes you feel the fool for not ordering an iced water (maybe .50) and spoon the ice out!
Best Regards,
Ron
Great Eats in/near Atlanta
Hi,
Just returned from a quick trip to the area and found three spots about which I must comment.
First is on Memorial Drive SE and called Home Grown. (http://www.homegrownga.com/)
A fun, funky vibe. Great southern breakfast treats!
Especially enjoyed that a local artist was hanging a show as we were having late breakfast. When in Atlanta again, we will definitely return to try other items from this menu!
We tried a great dish featuring pimento and cheese grilled on Texas toast with bacon and fried green tomatoes. A kind of white trash BLT--delicious every bite!
Also wonderful is their chicken biscuit with sausage gravy. Salty/peppery chicken breast strips (I just can't call them tenders)
Can't leave without pie! The Lemon Icebox brought back memories of my Mother's best cooking before she aged and started taking "shortcuts"
The wait staff was friendly and fun. Opening line: If you're looking' for a place with great food, you found us. If you want really healthy food, maybe not! Fair warning and love the truth in advertising.
Second is just West on Memorial: Ria's Bluebird (http://riasbluebird.com/)
(Across from Oakland Cemetery and worth a visit if for only Margaret Mitchell, Bobby Jones and Maynard Jackson grave sites. (http://www.oaklandcemetery.com/)
Equally funky vibe as Home Grown and a great setting.
Huevos as good as I ever ate. The pinto bean's very flavorful, great salsa verde and all served over three probably homemade tortillas. The coffee was also delicious.
Then who would imagine great food in the shadow of Atlanta Airport?!
In very nearby College Park is a wonderfully restored feed store, now called: The Feed Store
(http://www.thefeedstorerestaurant.com/)
We had their Wedge Salad (with a topping they called Southern Trail Mix) A treat!
Panzanella -The Lemon Vinaigarette is to kill for.
Fried Calamari--Very nice with a honey and candied ginger topping
Their Beef Short Rib (fork tender and like velvet) with a tremendous White Sweet Potato Gratin--Could be a meal in itself as some people treat Mac and Cheese!
The Peach Fried Pies can't equal my Aunt Lottie's but she didn't serve her's with Sweet Tea Sorbet!
What a great dish!
Service was cheerful and eager and helpful to each other.
One BIG complaint. If you are charging for food and drink at these price points and the drinks and food were well worth it, it is more than TACKY to charge for the ice in a Jack Daniels!
I've been hit with fees for many odd things in my 62 years but that will keep me from returning to The Feed Store, even though I loved the food.
It speaks to something pretty inhospitable... and that is not the price of ice.
Final comment: I'm not really accustomed to traffic in Atlanta but learned, thanks to the wait staff at Home Grown that Boulevard/Monroe/Piedmont is a wonderful alternative to using I85/75 to go to and from Buckhead. What a nice surprise!
Best Regards,
Ron Carter

Tupelo, MS--Where should we eat?
This is about a place for a mid-day meal. It's not just lunch.
This is real food, served in big portions and cooked with love by the Brother and Sister who own and run this road side spot. Only Monday to Friday and if my memory is correct, only 11am or so until 2pm. Never on Sunday!
Menu has some different features depending on which day you go.
Not in Tupelo but only a bit south in Verona, go enjoy the best southern cooking this southern boy who now lives in NJ has had in years. (Grew up in Jones County)
