Avoid Farmers' Market Faux Pas

"People pick the produce up and smell it and put it right against their nose. In Europe, you would get your hand slapped right away if you started fondling all the fruit."
Utter BS, I know for a fact that you can easily pick up every piece of fruit or vegetable in both France and the Netherlands until you find one and the seller won't be bothered.

Should You Tip on Takeout?

Oh god I love Europe where tip is a reward for good service, not a necessity.

Nagging Unsanitary Cooks

"But if the plates really were clean with no food or grease residues (were're talking weak bleach final rinse) and they were really well dried and they spent some time around a good strong UV source, like a sunny window, then chances are good that there isn't going to be a problem. The more time that passes in a hostile environment, the more of them die off. Most food born diseases need enough water, a food source, and time in a danger zone temp before you get enough of them to make you really sick. They are more vulnerable to UV damage which is pretty effective at killing them off, more so than you would think (skin cancer for bugs.)"
aggiecat: This is not true. Glass windows hardly pass UV-light. The amount that gets through is not enough to kill bacteria. So unless you have quartz windows, which I doubt, this will not work. If you have your windows open, it will work of course, but your plate might get contaminated with airborne germs, like spores from moulds and other fungi, bacteria and viruses. A good cleaning with soap, and a decent drying afterwards with a clean towel will make it nearly impossible for any microorganism to live on your plate.

Nagging Unsanitary Cooks

People really freak out about some things. The coffee cup story just made me laugh. While I used to be quite careless with my food, except for the raw meat/raw eggs thing, nowadays I'm living with a roommate and his cat. Cats are often carriers of parasites and therefore I don't adhere to the 5 second rule anymore. I often have to stop myself from picking up some food I dropped. I hope I'm not too paranoid about that stuff.
And Ruth Lafler, give it a rest please. We know already.

Sneaking Food into Movies

I have brought wine in at times, which I think is fine. Once I even brought a bag of chips in, which was obviously a bit too loud. I have thought about bringing in cheese to go with the wine, but it probably smells too much.

Bailing Before the Host Notices

I have a problem with the 2nd piece of advice. A lot of people are bad liars, if you lie badly and say: "We have to go.", it's not going to sound convincing at all. Just like the awkward: ‘We have to go: the baby-sitter, late night,’.

Fighting Wine Snobbery

LauraB706: Alcohol is probably a big cause of conundrums at the dinner table (and at parties even more so). That's why so many articles are written about it. And this one is more about bores than about drinking. It could be about someone who can't stop talking about cars, iPhones or the United Nations as well.

Foods That Destroy the Roof of your Mouth

There's some enzymes in kiwis that cut up proteins, perhaps your mouth is sensitive to that.

Foods That Destroy the Roof of your Mouth

Any oven pizza for me as well, I know I have to be patient, but I'm just not. There's nothing else though that I burn my mouth on.

Honeys from around the world--share your favorites!

I'm a really big fan of Dutch Heather Honey. It might be nostalgia, because that's the type my grandparents always had, but I still like that one best. The texture always was a bit crumbly, but still spreadable. And the taste was so rich!

Virgin Drink Reminder

"Not a party without alcohol? Twaddle.Helena, if you must have alcohol to endure a party, you're inviting the wrong people."
@Ken Writez: "Not a party without alcohol? Twaddle.Helena, if you must have alcohol to endure a party, you're inviting the wrong people."
Perhaps the guests are allowed some fun and they might not know eacht other. You have to think about your guests when throwing a party, right?

"I don't think it's responsible for her to declare, as an appointed "expert" that a party *must* have alchohol.
@Ruth Lafler: Responsible? Seriously? She is not telling anybody to get drunk. There are proven health benefits to drinking a little. And a wider and boring set of friends? You might consider that option, because I'm pretty sure that a big chunk of the population will not consider going to a party again if the host has proven not to pour any alcohol at all. So a wider set of friends would include them. Furthermore you state: "If that's true, then why not stay home with your own alcohol and not run the risk of breaking your friends' possessions..." Oh wow, drinking alone is now socially more accepted than drinking with your friends? Or perhaps she should invite some friends over who can break her possesions.

What's your favorite hot sauce?

Tabasco is definitely awesome. Sambal Oelek is good, Sambal Manis is very nice as well, it's not as hot and a lot sweeter. Other types of sambal are nice as well, such as Badjak and Udang.

Virgin Drink Reminder

Wow a lot of people jumped on the " ... but I confess I do believe that you can’t have a party without alcohol." line. I strongly believe in this statement as well. Nobody has to get wasted and not everybody has to drink, but a party is just better with some alcohol there. Even if I don't drink myself.
The argument that you shouldn't need a social lubricant if you throw a party, because you know the people well is invalid. Of course I don't need a social lubricant with the people I am inviting. My guests however might not know each other that well and they could be more comfortable with a drink. I don't say it's necessary for everybody, but people might be more at ease after a drink. Which is sad in a way, but that is the way it works in our culture. Alcohol is abundant and socially accepted (except by some of the posters above perhaps). I wouldn't say Helena has a problem with alcohol, I would say society does.
On a final note, I'm a student and if I threw a party without alcohol, that would probably be the last party people would attend at my place. Nice: no. Reality: Yes.
