Raw/Vegan food near Irvine?

Thank you, everyone! Such great options! I wish we had as many down here in San Diego.

Raw/Vegan food near Irvine?

I have to be in Orange County today, at UC Irvine, and will be there around dinnertime. My friend and I are both vegan, and I know there are some excellent raw/vegan restaurants in Costa Mesa and thereabouts, but don't know which to seek out. A friend gave me some leads several years ago, but I can't find them, and they're probably out of date anyway. All help welcome. Thanks!

Morning meeting place near John Wayne?

Thank you, all, for your help. I've forwarded to one of the people I'll be meeting with, and I'll see what she says. Even when I was living in LA, I didn't really know that area well.

Morning meeting place near John Wayne?

A group of 6 of us needs to meet near John Wayne Airport around 11 a.m. in a couple of weeks. I don't think we're talking lunch, at least not for everyone, but we need to be able to talk comfortably for an hour or so and order a snack and/or coffee. A place like Panera would probably be ideal, but I don't see any of their locations close by, and I'm not sure they could seat all of us comfortably anyway. Any suggestions? Thanks!

Trip tp OC and SD - Restaurant recs?

Depending on where in San Diego you'll be, I can highly recommend Naked Cafe in Solana Beach for breakfast. Good, fresh, imaginative food that won't break the bank and includes an ocean view to boot.

Ethnic restaurant between HB and SD?

American style is fine as long as I can get veg options (other than a veggie burger or salad) and the food is interesting and good. Share away! Someone I know suggested Dana Point, for instance, but the only places I know there are in the harbor and mostly seafood/tourist/marina food, expensive and with few options for me.

Ethnic restaurant between HB and SD?

You know, I just went to a site with Norys menus, and there doesn't seem to be a single vegetarian option, other than a couple of appetizers, so that leaves that out. Natraj looks great. I'll let you know!

Ethnic restaurant between HB and SD?

Wow, Junglekitte, what a motherlode of suggestions! Thanks so much! I'm sure we can find someplace among all those options--not only for next weekend but our next few get-togethers! And yes, I'll let you know where we end up and how we like it.

Ethnic restaurant between OC and SD?

You know I screwed up. It's the Roxy in Encinitas that's really mediocre. I actually like Mozy quite a bit, though the Thai wrap about took the roof of my mouth off the last time I was there. That was the only questionable meal I've had there.

The only raw food place I know about in Carlsbad is Cilantro, and I haven't tried it yet. Good to know there's another. My SO refuses to try it, so I have to find braver soul to go with me. There's another raw place behind Mozy, isn't there?

Ethnic restaurant between OC and SD?

Mozy's is really mediocre, IMO. I really want to like it more, but I haven't had a decent meal there yet and so don't even consider it anymore.

This is off topic, of course, but for breakfast and lunch in the area, there's nothing I like more than Naked Cafe in Solana Beach. It's crowded on weekends, though, and for good reason.

Vegetarian in San Diego..

Kim's in Encinitas (in The Lumberyard) has a really extensive veg section in its menu--more than a page. And it's actually quite good, at least most of what I've tried (curries, soups, pho). It bills itself as Chinese-Vietnamese, but it's really mostly Vietnamese. I'd shy away from anything that sounds like gringo Chinese food, but then I'd do that anywhere. And if you have the $$, treat yourself to a fresh coconut for your beverage.

North County, San Diego (Oceanside)

For the chocolatier catering part, contact Mariella at guannichocolates.com. Guanni sells handmade chocolates through the farmers markets, and they are the best I've ever had. She also does special orders and will probably cater--I know she does weddings. And she's located in Fallbrook. I'll probably see her husband at the farmers market today and will ask for you.

Ethnic restaurant between OC and SD?

Thanks, Enorah. We've had good experiences at Bangkok Bay too, though I was hoping to find something farther north so our friends don't have to drive more than an hour. There seems to be a wasteland between Carlsbad and Lake Forest when it comes to good ethnic restaurants. Then again, maybe I just don't know where to look. I've never managed to get into Swami's on a weekend, but didn't know it was open for dinner. It always seemed like a breakfast and lunch place.

Ethnic restaurant between OC and SD?

Thanks, SD Gourmand. I was there once almost two years ago and found it awfully pricey for what you got, and although we had reservations, we still have to wait, and they didn't have enough menus. (And there was only one veg dish on the menu, and it was loaded with cream.) But maybe I need to give it another chance.

Any REAL Italian food in San Diego?

Villa Capri in Carmel Valley is our favorite, though we really like I Trulli in Encinitas as well. It's probably a bit lighter and more upscale than what you have in mind, but my friend from Sicily gives it a strong stamp of approval (she likes I Trulli as well).

Good Ethiopian in SD?

Thanks, Ed. I'll certainly post if I find anything else, and I'll make a point of trying Asmara. The waiter at the place in Santa Rosa (called Abyssinia) recommended a place, but I can't find where I wrote it down, and can't find anything listed that is reminding me.

Ethnic restaurant between HB and SD?

Thanks. I've unfortunately come to the same conclusion about south OC. My SO isn't a big fan of Mexican food, but can be persuaded, and I'll check out the options you suggest. We've been to Dana Point a number of times with our bike club, and at least in the harbor area and environs, all we've really found have been the typical marina/touristy places (which was how we wound up at Inka Mama's in Aliso Viejo--someone with our group had a car last year). Where ever we end up doesn't have to be cheap-cheap, but we'd all appreciate reasonable prices.

Ethnic restaurant between HB and SD?

Thanks. I've been to their Web site, and it looks promising. Do they have many vegetarian options? It seems mostly to be fish and chicken, even in the eggplant.

Good Ethiopian in SD?

I was in Santa Rosa a week or so ago and had a fabulous dinner at an Ethiopian restaurant there. It made me pine for the days when I lived 15 minutes from the Ethiopian enclave on South Fairfax in LA. Are there any good Ethiopian restaurants in SD? I ate at one some years ago on, I believe, El Cajon Blvd., but it was just okay, and not worth making a special trip to from North County. I'm a veg, so I'd be especially interested in a place with good veg dishes. Gotta get my injera fix!

Ethnic restaurant between HB and SD?

We need to meet some friends for dinner next week. They live in Huntington Beach, and we live in North San Diego County. We'd like to find someplace in between, preferably ethnic, preferably inexpensive but tasty. And it needs to have decent vegetarian options (IOW, not limited to dishes heavy on cheese and cream.) It doesn't need to have wine, but it needs to be a place where we can visit leisurely.

Can anyone come up with suggestions? In the past we've enjoyed Inka Grill in Lake Forest, but it's a bit far for us San Diegans. (We were not impressed with Inka Mama's in Aliso Viejo.) OC south of the I-5/405 split seems a bit of an wasteland, ethnically speaking, based on Google searches and Yelp. Or are we missing something?

Quinoa SD

Naked Cafe in Solana Beach serves quinoa as a side with a number of dishes, and it's often red quinoa, which I'd never seen before. They also incorporate it into a number of dishes. One of my favorite restaurants, BTW, and judging from the lines on weekends, I have lots of company. Only open for breakfast and lunch, though.

Good place for lunch in North SD County by beach?

One of my absolute favorite lunch spots is Naked Cafe in Solana Beach. I recently had what had to be the best salad I've ever eaten in my life--their Autumn Salad (a special, alas). Everyone I've taken there has enjoyed it. It's not fancy, but it is very close to the beach. You can see the ocean from almost anywhere inside.

Ethnic restaurant between OC and SD?

We need to meet friends for dinner somewhere between Huntington Beach and North SD County. None of us is much into drinking, but we do like tasty food. Three of us are omnivores, but I'm a vegetarian, mostly vegan. Ethnic restaurants work well for us. Can anyone suggest some restaurants we might try that have reasonable vegetarian options and won't require either party to drive more than an hour? We've done Inka Grille in Lake Forest and Passage to India in Encinitas.
