What would you do if a restaurant wouldnt cook your Burger to Order?
As an aside but totally related - my bf and I ended up sitting next to Hilary Swank and her friend this summer on a patio of a modest brew-pub in Toronto and listened to her berate her server for nearly 10 minutes because the place was unable to cook her a rare burger.
She ended up eating nachos.
"That Corner Spot" at Front & Jarvis
went with some friends the other night and sat on the patio. we were virtually the only ones there. The beer on draught is local - a couple from mill street, a couple from amsterdam and peelers cider. The wine selection isn't stellar - mostly LCBO general list stuff but not overpriced. The server told me the kitchen gets essentially everything from the St. Lawrence Market and it was pretty evident. I had a sandwich with grilled balsamic vegetables and capicolla and my friends had some burgers- veggie and beef. Everything was well portioned and delicious. We each had 2 beers each and a meal and each paid 30$ incl tax and tip. I'll be back for sure. Great music, too.
Fave Ontario Beer
Love the Old Credit amber ale and pale pilsner. They make a holiday honey around Christmas which is delicious too, but the amber ale is the real standout, in my opinion. I usually buy it at the LCBO, but the brewery in Port Credit sells mini-kegs and big 680 ml bottles too, which are neat.
canuck veggie
I absolutely am aware that similar topics have been posted here, but would love it if a) anyone would be willing to post the links to previous similar posts or b) would like to offer advice... my boyfriend and I will be visiting San Francisco over easter weekend and Saturday just happens to be his birthday. I'd love to take him somewhere nice in honour of his 30th year, but am not really looking for something too swanky. He's a vegetarian and I'm not really into an Indian place(we eat it at home all the time); those would be our only limitations. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.....
Jersey Giant on Front St.
I want so badly to love the Jersey Giant, but after one too many excruciatingly long waits for even a first approach, I simply can't do it any more. The last straw perhaps came when I was there with a friend for a bite to eat and a pint and our server came to notify us in the middle of our meal that her shift was over and we had to settle up with her... immediately. She stood over us while we rooted through our wallets to come up with the cash and then disappeared, assuring us that someone would be taking care of us.... fast forward half an hour and nobody has come to clear our plates or offer us another drink. I'm usually quite patient, but the place was empty and I'd really just rather head over to the Jason George or C'est What....
Best/Worst Chowhound Tips
Best: Foxley, Abbot on the Hill (thank you, thank you, they're a couple of my faves!)
Worst: Edward Levesques
Chef's Tables in Toronto
There is also a chef's rail at Canoe which oversees the entire kitchen with a beautiful west-facing view as well....
Bargain Wedding Wines?
I've agreed to help a friend of mine pick some wines for her wedding reception in September and because they've gone over budget on every other aspect of the event, I've been given a ceiling of $8 a bottle (one red and one white) for the guest tables. The food is business as usual - roast supreme of chicken and beef tenderloin. I've been able to research quite a few wines at the LCBO, but unfortunately haven't had the opportunity to try many... does anyone have any recommendations/ favorites I should know about?
Thanks in advance!

ISO good ice wine at trader joes
if it's from canada, there are very strict laws about our icewines, and freezing them in an icebox is totally verboten. In fact, it has to be specifically colder than -8 degrees celcius in order to pick the grapes at all. In general, vidal icewines are much less expensive than riesling because the grape is not as complex and sometimes vidal icewine can be a bit cloying. But by all means, have with dessert (something like a peach crumble would be delicious) or as dessert.
Anyone know of any Dutch or Viennese restaurants in Toronto?
The only thing dutch on the menu at Quince are the croquettes. As a Dutch Canadian, I've been lamenting the lack of dutch cuisine around here for ages. At least the St. Lawrence Market sells the Conimex Indonesian seasoning so we can make our own Nasi Goreng. Also, the best Dutch store I know of is in Burlington in the Roseland Plaza.
Indian Restaurant in Burlington Ontario
Gates of India on New street - i think it's new street, at least - across the street from the Roseland Plaza and next to the vaccumn shop. Sounds great, right? Trad. Indian resto ambience, but my family and I have been visiting for what seems like decades now and have yet to be disappointed.
Rooftop Patios for Dinner?
I have a friend who used to work at the Boathouse and he has less than excellent things to say about the venue and, more importantly the food. I really like the patio at Czehoski, but sometimes I find the food a bit "precious". Agreed that The Fifth is the best, but if you're looking for something a little lower key, Pony Bistro on College has a cute rooftop patio and modest overall yummy eats.
