The Barrymore....or something like it.

As someone who recently moved to Las Vegas from Boston, I was very excited for my first dinner at the Barrymore. The restaurant offers some of my favorite dishes (steak tartare, mussles, pork belly) and has a vibe that I find missing at a lot of restaurants in this price range around here. I loved the restaurant, cocktails and decor, but found myself a bit disappointed with the food. Perhaps we didn't order the right items, but the mussles were very small, stringy and fishy and the steak tartare was quite bland. I will definitley try again and order different items, but the group I went with wasn't impressed with the food.

Montenapo Ristorante - Is it Open?

Thanks - I saw that it had closed, but had seen a review some out since that article so I wasn't sure.

Montenapo Ristorante - Is it Open?

I've been trying to book a table at Montenapo (New York Times Building) for a client meeting on Friday but the phone is out of service and the online reservation system is giving an error message. I don't live in NYC so I can't stop by and check it out - does anyone know if this restaurant is open/seating guests?

Thanks!

Too Much Leftover Smoked Brisket!

This is the book we used for the brisket rub! Guess we should have looked here first.

Too Much Leftover Smoked Brisket!

Thanks for the great ideas! Will definitely freeze some - I thought that may make it tough but sounds like it's the way to go.

Too Much Leftover Smoked Brisket!

We smoked a 14 lb brisket on Saturday (7/31) and have about 6 lbs leftover - any ideas for what to do with these leftovers and how long we can eat them? I would think it would be OK until at least Thursday, but never really sure about these things. I am definitely going to do a taco (cabbage, crema, avocado) one night, but any other suggestions will be great!

Best sandwich in boston?

I love sandwiches! Could eat one every day. Some of my favorites are:

- Pork Cemita - Dorado Tacos & Cemitas in Brookline Village

- Steak Bahn Mi - Pho Viet's in Super 88 Food Court, Allston

- Roast Beef, Peppers and Cheese Grilled Sandwich on Whole Wheat - Sam La Grassa's, Downtown

Where to Buy Fresh Turkey Legs?

Thanks, super helpful. I'll try Lord Jeffs. By fresh I meant not frozen since they probably wont have time to thaw between when I buy them and when I need to start cooking them, but if frozen is the most common way I'll just make do. My first time making these so very unfamiliar.

Where to Buy Fresh Turkey Legs?

We're having a BBQ this weekend and smoking some brisket on Saturday. Wanted to make a batch of smoked turkey legs for the non red meat eaters - any idea of where to find these in the Brighton/ Watertown/ Waltham area? I haven't seen them at the local S&S in Allston. Thanks!

Basho?

We were here for a birthday dinner this past Sunday (7/11), and everything was outstanding. We had a party of eight and were dining at 8:00pm, 1 of maybe 3 tables in the whole restaurant. The space was a bit "un-intimate" because of the high ceilings and large open space but there were also a few cool design elements, particularly the lighting. Since we were with a large group we didn't get to try everything we wanted, but instead went along with the flow. Here are a few dishes that I tasted that really stood out:

Chicken Balls: This appetizer was great, small meatballs that are caramelized on the outside and juicy inside
Fried Shumai: Nothing special, pretty much like all others, not greasy at all
Spicy Edamame: They have a few different options for toppings, the spicy version is juicy and messy becuase of the chili sauce that is on it, but very tasty
Dragon Roll: Sweet potato tempura, avocado, eel
Yuzo Yellowtail: Very light flavor, still got the fish, delicious

Overall everything was outstanding, and we got out of there (with a separate check) for $80 for dinner for two including 2 drinks each.

Hole in the Wall, Family Run

Don't know about all but the ones I like, I REALLY like. Mostly in the Allston/Brookline area because that's where I live

Italian (my addition): Carlo's Cucina
Mexican: Angela's
Fish Taco: Dorado & El Pelon
Vietnamese (bahn mi esp.): Pho Viet's in Super 88 Food Court
Thai: S&I To-Go
Ramen: Ken's in Super 88
Fried Chicken: Tupelo
Clam Roll (hot dog bun, buttered, and overfilled w/ whole belly clams): Tony's Clam Shop
Lobster Roll: Love the original Kelly's, haven't had Neptune but it's at the top of my list

Best fries around???

I too love fries, some of my favorite include:

Publick House: thin and crispy, fresh cut, always with double chili aioli

Teatro: Also thin and crispy, parmesan and truffle oil

5 Guys: Very fresh, don't usually prefer thick cut but these are tasty

Huevos Rancheros

I thought the version at Franlkin Southie was OK but my favorite so far is at Metropolis Cafe in the South End - eggs your way topped with spicy black bean hash, salsa, sour cream and tortilla strips

Gluten free pizza in Boston - anything actually worth it

My sister likes the pizza from Stone Hearth a lot, I haven't tried it. I have tried the GF pizza at Uno's and can tell you to STAY AWAY from it, it's terrible.

Need Recipe Help: Lavender Simple Syrup/Lemon/Champagne

Thanks for the suggestions, I'll be doing a few trials tonight and tomorrow and will keep this in mind - considering sneaking in some vodka/gin since I know that will taste good

Need Recipe Help: Lavender Simple Syrup/Lemon/Champagne

Hi All -

I have been put in charge of making the "punch" for a bridal shower this weekend. The bride requested "lavender lemonade" that they serve at a local restaurant. I got the recipe, it calls for:

lavender simple syrup to taste
1 part fresh squeezed lemon
1 part water
vodka
topped with soda water

The only problem is that the venue only allows champagne/wine and the bride decided to go with the champagne. I was thinking of doing

1 part lemon
.5 parts water
.5 parts champagne
lavender simple syrup to taste

How does this sound, will it be too sweet? I am planning a few trial runs this week and wanted to get some input before I waste too many ingredients.

Thanks!

Fresh Lavendar - Waltham/Watertown/Brighton?

The people at Formaggio were super nice and helpful but can't get it until Friday. Since I am afraid of waiting for the last minute (need the drink ready on Saturday) I am going to grab the lavender from Russo's and give it a try, I think I will only need about 4 plants and $12 is worth relieving some stress!

Fresh Lavendar - Waltham/Watertown/Brighton?

Thanks very much, this is great help. I'll call Formaggio Kitchen and if all else fails will go down the dry route - I hadn't even thought of that!

Fresh Lavendar - Waltham/Watertown/Brighton?

My friend has requested a lavender infused lemonade for her bridal shower this weekend, and I am in charge of making it. Any idea on where I can find fresh lavender - I work in Waltham and live in Brighton. I was thinking of trying Russo's, but don't have much time left for trouble shooting!

Gluten Free/North End/Inexpensive - Possible?

My sister's boyfriend is in town from Las Vegas and really wants to have dinner in the North End on Monday 3/29. We will be meeting them there around 6:30pm. My sister has a gluten allergy and, while it's not mandatory, we would love to find a restaurant with GF pasta. I know Marco has some GF offerings, and we will go here if it it the only choice, but I was hoping to find something a bit less pricey. Any suggestions? I know there are some great choices outside of the NE (Erbaluce, Burton's Grill, etc), but with the way everyone's schedule worked out, we are only looking for options in this area.

Your best fried chicken recipe(s)?

My best way is Marion Brown's recipe:

The recipe calls for a whole fryer, but since it was just the two of us we picked up a package of 5 drumsticks. Rinse the chicken in cold water and pat dry. In a gallon sized plastic bag, mix 1/2 cup flour, 1 tsp salt, 1 tsp pepper, 1 tsp garlic powder, 1 tsp cayenne and 1 tsp paprika (this is modified for the smaller portion.) Shake the chicken in the bag and coat evenly but then shake off all excess flower. Heat 1 cube butter and 1 cup shortening in the fryer until smoking hot (don’t worry if it bubbles from the butter, it will go down and get hot without burning.) Carefully drop in the chicken and cook covered until a LIGHT golden brown on both sides, this will take about 4 minutes per side.

Turn back to original side and cook covered until a Dark brown on both sides, this will take about 5 minutes per side. reduce the heat and cook 5 additional minutes on each side (until fork tender) or until chicken is cooked through. Remove from the fryer to a paper towel lined plate and let drip – transfer to a parchment lined baking sheet and put in an oven that is heated to 250 to keep warm. Drain most of the grease from the fryer, reserving about 2 tbs of fat and ALL the pan drippings. Add 2 tbs of flour and mix well, slowly mix in 2 cups of milk. Bring to a simmer and leave until desired thickness. This recipe calls for a very traditional white southern gravy but we like spices so we added a liberal amount of salt, pepper, garlic and paprika.

Fun lunch spot in Brighton, near St. Elizabeth's hospital

I've heard good things about Jasmine Bistro (Cambridge and Market) and it looks like a nice atmosphere from the outside although I've never eaten there. Devlin's also has a nice patio, and if the weather keeps up it may be open this week.

Good Food & Kid-Friendly

Went to Max & Dylans (Theater District) with a 5 year old this weekend. The staff was overly accommodating and the choices on the kids menu were very reasonably priced. There are also a lot of kid-friendly items on the regular menu (think mac n cheese, sliders). both of our meals were great, will definitely be back!

Dorado Tacos - excellent experience

Dorado is the only place I have ever had a Cemita (pork) and I thought it was great! If there is someplace where they are even better I would love to try. I do like La Verdad's fish taco's, but do you know of any other places in the Boston/Brookline/Allston/Brighton area that serves a better cemita?

Best Pot Pie in Boston?

Tried the Harrow's pot pie with chicken and vegetables - as another poster noted it was very starchy and I also found it to be quite bland. The crust was fantastic, but the filling quite unremarkable.

Help with the in-laws

We are prevented from hosting because we live about 1.5 hrs away from the rest of the family and they don't come to visit often. We are always going to them.

Help with the in-laws

They have about 5 of these gatherings a year, and live in a different state so we always go to them. I am not saying I am too good for their food, I would just like to contribute something tasty but don't feel able to. We have invited them over to our house for a holiday party, but since she has been hosting for so long she brought her own food - the same food she makes at home! I am not trying to change the way they eat, just want to share my dishes with them as well...

Help with the in-laws

I have a similar problem that leads to me getting heated every time there is a family gathering. My problem is that his family always tells me I cant bring anything because there will be enough food. The only time they ever let us bring anything is Thanksgiving when we are "allowed" to bring a fruit tart from a bakery near our house. This Christmas I told the host that I would like to bring rolls and she said it would be ok - I made plain rolls and rolls stuffed with ham and cheese, the basket was still full the the crescent rolls she made just in case disappeared.

My issue is that I actually WANT to bring food, I love cooking and sharing it with people but the hostess (same every time) thinks it is an imposition on me to bring something. Their meals are also very plain/simple and usually lacking seasoning and flavor. I have also never seen a fresh vegetable in the house.

Do you think it would be too pushy for me to bring the stuff and sautee up some fresh green beans or asparagus for the next gathering? For me a holiday meal isn't the same without a substantial amount of fresh veggies, but even one would be nice!

Low Cholesterol Boiled Egg Breakfasts

Don't know much about how to reduce cholesterol but it sounds like my go-to breakfast may work for you - mini quiche cups reheated.

Mix 2 cups liquid egg whites, any combo of meat/veg (I use canadian bacon, mushrooms and spinach), 3/4 cup reduced fat cheese, s&p and tabasco. Divide evenly among 12 muffin tips, cook at 400 for 20 minutes. Once cool, prepackage them (2-3 per meal) - they are super easy to grab in the morning and only take about 45 seconds to heat up.

good luck!
