Really good hardwood charcoal in Lexington area?

Prime, a meat shop in Arlington Heights on Mass Ave. (right opposite the bus depot) sells the same brand as the BBQ barn (Canadian, French name, can't remember it). We've been very happy with it for our Egg.

Babka in Boston?

The babka you are describing is what my (Polish, non-Jewish) grandmother called her sweet bread, usually made at Easter, but not always. It's not a MA thing, but it may be a Polish thing. What's being described by everyone else does sound a lot like a chocolate version of potica (my recipe says it's Hungarian and usually has walnuts or poppy seeds).
I have seen the Polish sweet bread at bakeries in Salem and Springfield (Chmura's Bakery, 14 Pulaski Street,Indian Orchard).

Is there anywhere North of Boston to see lots of flowering trees and catch lunch nearby?

A bit south: Garden in Woods, Framingham
Gore Place or Lyman Estate, Waltham

Waltham, especially, has lots of choices for a pleasant meal.

A bit west: Tower Hill Botanical Garden, Boylston

For smaller parks on your preferred route, check the Trustees of Reservations and the MassAudubon website.

ISO: Thick-shelled white eggs for pysanky (Ukrainian dyed Easter eggs)

I also do pysanky and typically get my white eggs from Wilson Farms (not their own eggs, they get them from a vendor in PA,I think). Extra large, haven't had trouble blowing them out. Maybe just go a size up, to get a better grip? (But not too big, too much to decorate, then.)

problems digesting many legumes

The baking soda thing is a myth--the idea was it would react to "degas" the beans; doesn't work, and according to Cooks Illustrated, it makes dried beans tougher. The above recommendation to add an acid is a better one.

Organic Baby Spinach... Never Again!

Oh yeah, I peeled and quartered grapes. I'd probably have removed stems too--one blown diaper would cure you of the idea that very young kids really can digest much fiber.

Where can I BBQ at the beach in Boston??

For 100 people you will need a permit, from either the town you are in or from the state agency who owns the land. I organize company events and we recently found out it is already too late to get a permit from DCR for this summer--the deadline was May 1st. That includes pretty much all the real estate along the Charles River, Nantasket Beach, Sandy Beach in Winchester and many other areas. Your best bet is to go through a caterer who can suggest a venue.

Also Lexington Farms (formerly Busa's) in Lexington, on Lowell Street, on the Arlington line.

It's Strawberry Season Again! Anyone seen the local ones yet?

Wilson Farm had very good berries from Delaware last week.
Based on my Arlington strawberry patch we are about a week away just to start.

Ice Cream Cake in Metrowest?

Chilly Cow in Arlington makes a good one,
as does Rancatore's in Belmont or Lexington.

Polish Christmas wafers (oplatki)

Does anyone know a source for Polish Christmas Eve wafers other than Baltic European Market in South Boston--was there an Eastern European market in Billerica, for example?

Fresh herring?

They may bring it in for Christmas Eve, it is a common part of a 7 fishes meal. Fish markets down in New Bedford/Fall River might also be a better bet.

Good Polish restaurant OTHER than Cafe Polonia?

There was a Café Polonia in Salem for about 18 mos/2 years? It closed a few months ago. And, yes, pierogi are not hard to make, easier than golumbki, IMO.

I'm sorry, I'm old enough that the thought of an Arlington-Lexington dining "scene" still blows my mind. but: I don't actually disagree with anything you said, although I do like Ixtapa's drinks.

Toddler friendly dessert/ice cream parlor in Cambridge/Arlington/Lexington area?

Don't know if you are still looking for this but Colonial Candies in Bolton (used to be Hebert's) has an extensive make your own sundaes bar. We were there yesterday, very decorated for Halloween, lots of kids there.

Toddler friendly dessert/ice cream parlor in Cambridge/Arlington/Lexington area?

Pretty much all of them are toddler-friendly. For what you want to do--make your own sundaes--your best bet might be Frozeland, a new frozen yogurt place at 882 Mass Ave. in Arlington, across from the high school. Very friendly folks, and of course the whole point of the pace is choosing your own toppings. It has much better parking than the other frozen-yogurt place in Arlington Center (Yummy's) and is large and cheerful looking.
Otherwise, the Chilly Cow in Arlington Center, but you can't do it yourself, and Rancatore's in Lexington (also not usually do it yourself, but maybe) come to mind.

PYO: Plums

I have in previous years purchased Damson plums at Honey Pot Hill in Stow. If you possibly can, go on a weekday--it is a very child-oriented place in the fall (which fine for me and my family, but probably not for everyone).

PYO: Plums

Does anyone know of a farm/orchard that is offering PYO plums? I have previously gotten them from Nashoba Winery, but they are not doing PYO for plums this year. (And, before someone mentions it as an option, the MassAg website does not allow you to search for plums.)
