Why ham on Easter? [split from Home Cooking]

I read somewhere that during the Spanish Inquestion (sp?) the people had to prove that they were Christians and not Jews by eaing pork for the Easter dinner. And they had to hang the leg bone outside their door also as proof they weren't Jews (the people who crucified Jesus).

Food shopping in San Antonio

If you want to take a trip to Austin there's an asian market up there that covers Thai - Viet Namese - Japanese - Philippino - Chinese food. It's the best Asian market this side of Southern California. The name is MT Market 10901 N Lamar.

Dinner for Family in Merced

I am planning a dinner for about 15 people in Merced in late July. I 'm looking for a restaurant with a small private room. Any type of food would be fine and price is not a major consideration.
Any ideas would be appreciated.

Sharing a Plate in London

My wife and I will be visiting London, specifically staying in Kensington. My question is that after a esophegeal cancer operation I can only eat/drink about 16 oz of food and beverage at one sitting. Here in the States my wife and I often share a plate. This is usually not a problem on this side of the pond. And I tip as if we had two meals so the staff won't feel cheated. My question is, is sharing a plate accepted in the UK and if so do the restaurants charge extra? We will be staying in a small hotel with a kitchenette and will eat "take away" meals as much as possible but will have to eat some meals in restaurants.

Kensington in Aug

After reading to responses one thing on our list is to have batter fried fish & chips in a pub. The last time we were in London we had f&c in a pub but it was breaded not batter fried. I realize batter fried may have a ton of calories and could be called "a heart attack on a plate" but want to try it while we're there.

Dinner near Victoria Palace Theater in Aug

Being from Texas we have had asian, Italian and obviously mexican. But we don't have much experience with east indian or southwest asian food (pakistan - Iraqi etc). Also we'd like to try pub food. The last time we were in London we had fish and chips in a pub and were disapointed. We were looking forward to batter fried fish and both times when we ordered F&C in a pub we got breaded fish, although the chips part of the meal was great.

Dinner near Victoria Palace Theater in Aug

We will be going to the Victoria Palace Theater in Aug to see Billy Elliott and would like to know if there are any reasonably priced restaurants in the same area. We like any type of food. Also what kind of dress does one wear to the theater (coat & tie - casual)?

Food shopping in San Antonio

Try Tims Oriental & Fish Market for asian food.
7015 Bandera Rd Ste 8
San Antonio, TX 78238

They have the basic essentials for most asian cultures (Vietnamese - Chinese - Korean -Japanese - Thai - Phillipino etc). I'm an American of Japanese decent and it's one of the few places where I can get some japanese speciality items. There are acouple of Korean markets on Harry Wurzbach (one of them has a restaurant in the back but I haven't tried it yet) about a mile south of Loop 410. And then there's another Korean store on on Pt Booker Rd in Universal City

Kensington in Aug

We will be staying in Kensington in early Aug. We've been to London on a tour so we didn't get to walk around and do things on our own, This time we'll be on our own and are looking for cheap and good (oxymoron) food in the area. We're staying near the Earls Court Road Tube station. Our hotel has a fridge and microwave so we aren't above buying prepared food and heating it in the micro. Willing to try "almost" anything but would like to try some of the breads, cheeses and Indian food. Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated. If there is another thread on the same subject I'll check it out.

Live Oak vs San Antonio, Tx

In the Medical area on Wurzburg Parkway is the Golden Wok. Decent Mongoloian BBQ and Dim Sum. On the weekends the Dim Sum is on carts but during the week you have to order off of the menu. Still the only Dim Sum in the area. The Mong BBQ is pretty decent with plenty of veggies and sauces to pick from. Haven't tried the other chinese dishes off of the menu.

Noodles Houses in San diego

Tonkotsu style ramen is native to Kyushu Japan. They boil pork bones for hours and (someone help me here) somehow the broth turns milky white. It has something to do with the fat/marrow/other "things" in the pork bones. Anyway it makes really, really good ramen if it's made right. When I was stationed in Japan the broth was so good I could drink the soup and throw away the noodles-I didn't of course but it was really good. I know tonkotsu is really close to tonkatsu but it's an entirely different dish.

Best Restaurant Not in a Major Texas City - Texas

One of the best meals I've had since coming to Texas is Risotto's restaurant in McAllen. The meals were great but their Cream Brulee was outstanding.

Noodles Houses in San diego

Thanks for the comments, I guess I'll have to give Tajima's a try. There used to be a noodle shop right across the street from the Chopstix on Convoy that had a great tonkotsu ramen they called Kyushu. Anyone know if they reopened anywhere in SD?

First trip to London! Where to eat?!?! (Coming from San Francisco, LA and Chicago)

We were in London in Sept and suprisingly one of the best meals we had was take-out at the Whole Foods in Kensington. In the basement there were two salad bar tables and one steam table. You get a container and load up with whatever then pay by the pound. Everything we had was fresh and well prepared. The breads and rolls were excellent. Coming from San Antonio we were surprised to see a Texas based store in London.

McAllen - Rissoto

I was in McAllen on business with some co-workers and had dinner at Rissoto Restaurant. The meal was excellent, I had the Steak Diane (the menu had a different but similar name) and it was one of the best Steak Diane I've ever had and Creme Brulee for dessert. The Creme Brulee was without question the best Creme Brulee I've ever had. If it's one the menu I always order it so I've had Creme Brulee at various restaurans before.

Looking for good italian in San Diego

I'm sorry but I have to ask. I'm an ex-SD resident (currently living in San Antonio) and used to go to Stefanos and Zolezzi's. My memory isn't what is used to be but I always enjoyed the food there. My question is (and this is driving me crazy) is where were they?

San Antonio Help

Second the opinion of The Lodge at Castle Hills. I thought the food and service were excellent. The tab for a party of four was $325 which included a bottle of wind and the tip.

English and European Tex-Mex Virgins Hoping to Go Wild in San Antonio!!!

Not being a native Texan I can't comment on most of the places in this thread. However, I've lived most of my life in Colorado and California and love mexican food. One thing you should try while in San Antonio is the "Puffy Tacos". You can get them in alot of the local mexican restaurants. I've only seen them in San Antonio, I don't know why because they're really great.

favorite soy sauce brand?

Does anyone know what White Soy Sauce is? I bought a bottle while in LA (I'm from San Antonio). It was pretty expensive, don't remember what it cost but I bought it because I was in LA and probably wouldn't see something like that in Texas. It is a dark yellow color and clear, it tastes like soy sauce to my un-educated palate.

Chow in Escondido?

For a great breakfast try Champions on Grand Ave in Escondido. Some of the breakfast plates are a "heart attack on a plate" especially the homemade corned beef hash(not out of a can) and the cinnamon rolls are huge and to die for.

Long Weekend in DFW-area...need brews and BBQ

At the risk of occuring the rath of the reeeally serious Hounds I recommend the Red-Hot & Blue in Irving and thought the pulled pork sandwich was pretty good. I've been to other branches of RH&B in Virginia and think this branch is better. I could see the pink smoke ring in the pulled pork meat. I've been to the greats in Lockhart but don't remember if they had any pulled pork. Can't comment on the brew since I was driving to San Antonio and didn't have a beer.
