Decent americano near Carroll Gardens?

Hi. Just want to add: Have been to Root Hill several times since and have had their regular brewed coffee. It is very good too. A small is $1.50, so you do not have to spend over $3 to get a Clover coffee to get a good one. Nice place. They really care.

Root Hill Cafe

Went here for the first time today. I got an Americano which was the best I've had in a very long time. My husband got the Clover coffee -- wonderful. It felt a little surreal to pay more than $3 for a non-espresso based cup of coffee. But then I thought of the hundreds (thousands?) of lousy cups of coffee I've spend money on in a lifetime and figured that the near guarantee of a good coffee experience might be worth $3.

We found the service and the whole feel of the place friendly and happy. Excited to find it.

Reporting: Thank you! Went to Root Hill today and it was lovely. I had an Americano which was wonderful, and my husband had a cup made with the Clover machine -- excellent. Nice, friendly place too. A real pleasure.

Decent americano near Carroll Gardens?

Ha! He does. But sometimes that's not enough . . . . Thanks for all these answers. I will try Caputo's bakery for now. Have never had their coffee.

Decent americano near Carroll Gardens?

Oh, yeah -- I didn't even bother asking about a good regular drip. Kind of given up around here? There is D'Amico's whose beans we buy and usually like. I love D'Amico's in many ways. But .. . . . well, they're not that careful with their brewed coffee.

Decent americano near Carroll Gardens?

Well, I might as well respond to my own post. Why not? I had one at Sweet Melissa's yesterday. It was drinkable. It was OK. Better than some shameless slop I've had at other places. But still searching for better. I'm starting to think that Americanos are the stepchild of the espresso drinks. Many places don't even list them and I often get asked "how much water do I want with that?" Huh? Aren't they supposed to know that? I am, after many hard knocks, starting to learn the answer to that, but unless someone has a particular unusual preference, shouldn't the barista know how much water to add?

My husband's very much into espresso and has perfected them at home with his reconditioned (himself!) Olympia Cremina. In deference to my wimpy pallet, he's also developed a wonderful Americano, though I image purists frown upon the whole idea of it, and perhaps anything other than straight espresso. Anyway, I'm not looking for his level of heavenliness, just a decent cafe Americano.

Decent americano near Carroll Gardens?

Hi. Where can I get a decent americano in or near Carroll Gardens in Brooklyn? Not only a good shot of espresso, but a place that knows how to make an americano as well? Thanks.

Oh, also, nice simple homey presentation with just enough festiveness. I love that.

Best buttercream?

Hello. Reporting as promised. I did get Sugar Sweet Sunshine's pistachio cake with the almond butter cream which they call "The Mousse." It did not disappoint. Very close to the cupcake, the cake is the right texture and not too pistachio-y. And the butter cream was light and wonderful. I can be iffy about almond, but here it's great. Had it for breakfast too . .. . yikes.

Oops, sorry, somehow did not see last three responses when I just wrote about Sugar Sweet. I know Baked a little; it's near me. Though I don't know their cake or frosting. Have never been to Butter Lane. Thanks!

UPDATE: Went to Sugar Sweet Sunshine Bakery (126 Rivington St.) today and had their pistachio cupcake with almond buttercream. Yes, yes, yes. That is what I'm looking for. Will most likely order cake in same.

I thought maybe I worded that confusingly: Trying to avoid super dense butter cream like they make at Cupcake Cafe.

Carroll Gardens rut...its a good thing!!!

In defense of not knowing where Lucali's is, he has no sign. I happen to live steps away, or I might now know it existed either as I've been away from chowhound and other sites likely to mention it for quite a long time now.

In defense of Lucali's: it is devine. Yes, I am luck because I can sit in my apartment and await the call that my table is ready. This makes the wait part far less burdensome for me. Still, though, better to put your name in early regardless, or be there when he opens at 6pm.

Best buttercream?

Hi. Need a simple cake with very good, light, not-too-sweet buttercream frosting. Would like to avoid boutique-y artisan-y (are those the right words?) places, and very dense Cupcake Cafe-like buttercream. Any bakery suggestions? Posted this on the Manhattan Board because I thought Manhattan was more likely, but I live in Brooklyn, so here would be great as well. Thanks so much.
