Just like home cook'n
I am about 1/2 way through a complete kitchen reno, I'm managing ok with a makeshift kitchen in the basement, but i need a nice home style "supper". Have been doing a lot of take out, and dining out, but am at the point where i just need some simple, yummy, homestyle food. I am "greased" out, salted out, and microwaved out. I know there must be some nice basic restaurants in this city, not looking for showy cuisine, even though i will be doing a lot of that in my new kitchen, but for now, just want to feel like im going to moms for supper. i am in leslieville, but have a car, and am willing to travel to get "comforted"......3 weeks to go to my new kitchen...woohooo
Cold Stone milkshake flavourless: any decent shakes in downtown Toronto ?
I have been to JR in the US a number of times, especially for the malts, but when i tried it here, both at younge and dundas and Vaughan mills i could not believe the quantity you "did not" get. The glass arrived about 2/3rds full, and the remainder which was in the shaker consisted of about 1 oz, not even enough to fill the glass to the top. in the US, you get a full glass and well over a third full shaker. I questioned the server at both locations, knowing its not their fault but store policy, it turns out its the owners policy who owns both location...well i have not been back since, although i still crave malts
Montreal Bagels wood-baked on Roncesvalle?
they bring in their bagels from both St Urbain, and Bagel House, i prefer Bagel House, more authentic. They bring them in fresh daily, and on saturday mornings i have bought them when they are still warm.
Bagel world opening on Bloor St at Spadina
theres a new little store on Roncy, just north of Queen, on the East side (right accross from the nursing home) that brings in both St Urbain, and Bagel World bagels. I was there early saturday, around 8 am, and they were still warm, and i have picked a couple up after work around 5ish, and they still have some left. Sure beats a trip north.

School- 1st Annual Spaghetti Feed-advice?
I totally agree, meatballs on the side. Although i almost always use whole wheat pasta, for the masses, i suggest regular, its less expensive, and even the real health nuts, can forgo the ww for one nite, and i still think the majority perfer regular. I enjoy having regular pasta when i go out. As far as bread, i suggest just some nice fresh crusty italian loaves, with an offering of either regular or garlic butter. No toasting not fuss no muss. Salad, simple, maybe a choice, regular tossed, or cesear, again dont go gourmet, i doubt anyone is expecting it. Desserts can be a few large slab cakes, maybe a chocolate and and vanilla, covers most basis there. The one thing you may want to try is to make sure they are peanut free. I was involved in a spaghetti nite when i was in grade school, many moons ago, i remember it like yesterday, so simple and so fun. Have a great time and good luck

I planning on making braised short ribs at an upcoming dinner party, and am having troubles finding them. My first thought was costco, but while i was there on the weekend i could'nt see any. I am thinking calling cumbraes and royal beef, but if anyone has any other ideas, they would be very welcome. thanks lb
What's "the" food where you're from?
My husband is from northwest Ontario, Thunder Bay, and they have this pastry (danish, donut, not sure how to describe) with pink icing called a persian. He said he was addicted when he was growing up, so when i was up there i had to have one, ...two, three...ok lots. its like a honeybun with pink icing, i don't know what they put in them, but when they are fresh....they are so good, in a very bad sort of way.

slow cooker favorites?
This may not be quite what your looking for, but what i use my big 6 qrt slow cooker the most is for making chicken stock. Its the best easiest stock i have ever made, and i set it for over nite. about 8 pm i load it up, chicken backs, bones, carcuss, whatever, a carrot, a celery stock, a few pepper corns and water, turn it on low, next morning, viola, some of the best, clearest stock. I just drain it through a colinder, to get out the big stuff, then thru a fine seive or cheese cloth if i want it perfectly clear. Chicken stock without skimming or baby sitting.

New Bakery in Leslieville
I was there at 8 am saturday morning, i don't think they where even actually open yet, but since i had the right change and had my own cloth bag they where more than happy to serve me. Got a wonderful stout and oatmeal round, and a fruit loaf. Both where still hot from the oven, and wow did it make my car smell wonderful, since i wasnt going home for a few hours yet. Both loaves where delicious. Welcome to the hood brick street, what a treat.

Do you remember these childhood favorite cookies?
or does anyone remember toybox cookies, again, they where very hard, but thicker, in different shapes, if i recall, square, round, and triangle, with a coating of pastel coloured icing, and a pic of a toy, ie rocking horse, teddy bear in the centre of each cookie made from a drizzle of white icing. Please tell me i am not hullicinating and these really did exist in my childhood, if not, i will seriously begin to question my other memories, and that can really open up a whole new can of worms.
ISO malted milk powder
Can anyone tell me where i can find malted milk powder, not ovaltine, but the stuff to make good old fashion chocolate malteds...I remember carnation used to have a malted milk powder, but that was eons ago, and i hav'nt seen anything recently. thanks lb
One treat a day for the rest of your life?
my moms home made perogies...haven't had them now in well over 10 years, i really should try to recreate them some day...mmmmmm to die for
buddha dog--toronto version
Amen roncie man, i had about 20 minutes to kill, as my mom had her dinner at the nursing home up the street, so i thought i would pop in and have a quick little snack myself. Little snack is an understatement, i had read that they were small, but this is rediculous. If you where to have 3 or 4 or more, you would totally fill up on bread. the overall taste, well i won't spit it out, but it sure did'nt leave much of an impression, the garlicy aoli, was well i think missing a whole lot of garlic, the weiner, was on the george forman a tad to long, the bun was ok, but i can get the same on at swiss chalet along with my quarter chicken. So in a nut shell, a miniscule wiener, bland aoli, and before i forget, prob the most dimwitted servers i have ever encountered, next time i think i will pull up a chair and have a snack with my mom at the nursing home.
Hot dog
Hi, im a Toronto hound coming to Buffalo for just 1 day, my friend is a hot dog nut, and thats all she wants for lunch. Which is the best, Louie's or Ted, or is there something better that i hav'nt heard of. Thanks very much
