Any recs for Port Washington?

I have to take my mom out for a birthday dinner - she's thinking Louie's, Waterview, Bistro Toulouse or Chez Noelle. I have not been to these places in a long time. But my previous experience is that these spots are very over-priced and they don't deliver. Where to go with my 73 year old mom to make her happy? She won't do the places I like like Trattoria Diane's (I feel like it would be perfect but ....)
I'm stumped. I don't have a lot of confidence in the places I mentioned. AM I paranoid? What would you recommend?

Theatre District with Elderly Parents

So my folks are seeing an early show on Saturday and want to eat nearby the Roundabout Theatre. This is where I get stuck! Where to go? I don't spend much time in the neighborhood. the few places I've been to are Hallo Berlin (delicious but a little to casual for my parents), Vynyl, St. Andrews (not bad but totally over-priced) and John's. Anyone have other suggestions? I'm specifically looking for something I don't have to shell a ton of dough on (that's why I am nixing all their tourist trap suggestions) but will provide a good experience.

Help for Solo Dining in Kansas City

I feel like I need to throw my two cents in - I had a miserable dinner at the American this last Friday. We brought out my mother-in-law who had been a big fan of the place and the chef for many years but now M.I.L does not get out much. She was thrilled to see an old waiter there who knew her from years back. Service was top notch but the food was so disappointing. Mother-in-law ordered the duck breast and it arrived tough - it seemed to be heavily over-cooked. My husband got the salmon as his main option (it is a minimum 3 course prixe fixe) and his dish was also very, very overcooked. We sent the duck back but it was my M.I.L's birthday and she did not want to sit around waiting for a new entree. My husband complained about the salmon but decided not to send it back so as to not elongate the night. The servers was very helpful and tried to make some good out of the situation. Luckily, my main dish (the chicken) and starter (tuna) were great. Anyway, overall it was not a happy affair - is this something anyone has gone through recently at the American? If you do go, perhaps avoid the foods I mentioned and let me know your experience.

Oysters, crabs in Seattle

Yes, my husband adores that place. Whenever we are in town, we hit it. He thought it beat Elliott's happy hour - price and taste-wise. I am not an oyster fan so I cannot give a true opinion. But hubby loves it and I like the down-to-earth atmosphere. We'll be there next week when we visit from Brooklyn.

Betty Bakery experiences?

Got my wedding cake and wedding cupcakes here. Very pricey (spent more on the cakes than the dress). BUT all of it was delicious. We always get each others birthday cakes (love the mango butercream).

Uh oh - Valentines Day in Napa - where can a girl get a delicious meal?

Thanks y'all for these suggestions. I'm here in No. CA now and looking forward to trying them !

Uh oh - Valentines Day in Napa - where can a girl get a delicious meal?

So I am a public school teacher here in Brooklyn, NY and I can only vacation when I don't have to teach. This upcoming school vacation (President's Day week) will find me tromping through Northern California in search of fresh air, space and good wine. I've also come to the realization that I'll be in Napa on Valentine's Day. I find Valentine's Day to be a bit of a dining bust - often it's hard to find just a well-priced meal on this holiday. Anyone have any suggestions? I've looked around the restaurants in Napa and found, as I thought I would, have prixe fixe Valentine's Day menus that are expensive and not entirely appealing. I don't want to stay in my hotel room (am staying in AVIA for night - right downtown). Any suggestions? I am willing to shell out money for a delicious meal but not willing to shell out bucks for a holiday hype meal! Thanks.....

Anyone been to the new Montreal Smoked Meat deli in Brooklyn, called "MILE END" ????

Had same issue with the poutine. Gravy was scarce (but creamy and flavorful) and lukewarm. It did little to melt the cold curds on my fries. Fries were good but it wasn't poutine that I'd spend the 1000 calories on again. More gravy, less cold cheese. The fries quickly cooled and I had intact cool clotted gravy with intact cheese curds.

Been there and love their poutine. I had it two nights before I got married last year. My dress still fit.... but barely.

Lunetta - telling it like it is

That meatball dish is a joke. I went in on a rec from someone - she went on and on about the meatballs. What a disappointment! And not a cheap one at that.

I live a block away from the place and am excited for it to open. I love, love, love poutine. My only complaint is that the poutine at this place seems on the high priced end (as per the website http://www.mileendbrooklyn.com/ ) But maybe that will keep me from going on a regular basis as it is one of my favorite 1000 calorie dishes.

Four Days in Kansas City for all your can eat!

Husband and I have an open evening tomorrow in KC. We are visiting from Brooklyn. Think we are going to take the advice from below and check out Room 39. That or Michael Smith's spot. Hmmm. So many choices!

Montreal Bagels in NYC (coming soon)!

I met the owner about 2 weeks ago - he was working inside the place. He said hopefully November. He went on to describe the smoked meats they'll have available... wow, sounds delicious. And I never get sick of poutine!

Need to get out of NYC on my birthday

So Blue Hill it was. Was a cool experience. We had a tour by one of the gardeners who was very knowledgeable about the whole operation. Made me want to bring my students there. Afterwards we had a simple lunch in the cafe. But we weren't too hungry as we sampled fruit along the way.

Really pretty place. The hogs were adorable - so friendly and fat. They looked very happy living out in the woods.

Need to get out of NYC on my birthday

Thanks! Did get away for a day - we ended up doing the shorter Blue Hill trip. Was really beautiful. Both Mohonk and Canal House look intriguing. Need to find a well-priced weekend. Getting out of the city is so important for me but it rarely happens. No car and scads and scads of papers to grade (I have 163 students this year).

my birthday is tomorrow and no reservations... where to go?

I loved the pasta and tomato at Scarpetta.... been trying to replicate it since (with a provided recipe from the restaurant!) with no luck. Convivio sounds like it might be it.

Need to get out of NYC on my birthday

Look more toward lunch. But that place looks grand. Maybe I can get a Saturday dinner out of it!

my birthday is tomorrow and no reservations... where to go?

My birthday is tomorrow (friday) and my husband didn't make any reservations. Where to go? I wanna have a nice dinner but not one where I will wait forever. Or if I am waiting, maybe a wait at a nice bar? I'm open to a lot.

I brought him to Scarpetta for his birthday (which wasn't too crowded on a Friday eve and it had a nice bar). Any places like that?

He thought we'd try our luck at Blue Ribbon Sushi but I tend to go for more caloric splurges on my birthday. I had wanted to try the Minetta Tavern but he called too late in the game for an appropriate dinner reservation. So I'm stumped.

Montreal Bagels in NYC (coming soon)!

I walk buy it every day. It's slowly coming together. Looks like it might open in a few more weeks. I'm scared for that as it is a block from where I live. I am a poutine fiend and had considered myself lucky b/c it's a trek to get some.

That was actually the top of my list! It's a good trip?

Need to get out of NYC on my birthday

My birthday is coming up and I have a rare access to a car. I need to take little day trip somewhere... that has some good food and scenery. Maybe upstate? Maybe Long Island. I looked at lunch at Mohonk Lodge in New Paltz and it seemed a little pricey ($65pp). Any suggestions? I work in an inner-city high school and would love a breath of fresh air!

Brooklyn Fare Tasting Dinner

It's actually part of a supermarket - Brooklyn Fare. It's on the corner of Hoyt and Schermerhorn in Brooklyn (right across from the A subway stop). It's $70 per person.

Near Penn Station.... anything?

Both sounds good. I'll run it by her. It's a tough neighborhood to find a restaurant!

Near Penn Station.... anything?

My disabled mom is coming in via train tonight to Penn Station and has very limited mobility. Do you guys know of any decent places nearby we could get dinner? There are many pubs but few restaurants. I used to go to bars around there and remember the food being pretty awful and more priced for the tourist. I'm looking for something not too expensive. Our palates are pretty open to most cuisines.

Rifugio Tips?

I'm actually Nichole's husband. We're staying at the Rif. Bolzano in Apli di Suisi, and at Rif. Malga Brogles, near Selva Gardena. For our final night in the region we haven't settled on a place to stay -- we want to be in or near Cortina, so we can catch the train there the next day for Venice (the second leg of our trip).
