Sripraphai - Not overrated
We had the same experience with the Drunken Noodles, they were just bad and bland - no side sauce either. And the whole meal was by far the most disappointing we've had in about 30 dinners. I think we made the mistake of telling them not to make some dishes spicy. We also went later on a Saturday night and they were very busy. We were reluctant to go back after that for a while, but we ventured out after Christmas on a weeknight, ordered everything very spicy and the meal was absolutely spectacular.

It could be the Shredded Dry Beef w Spicy Sauce and it is excellent.

Russian honey cake with many layers?
Gastronom or "A&R International Food & Delicatessen" on 108 st between 63 DR and 63 RD has at least two kinds of this honey cake and they are delicious. It is not a bakery, it is more of a Russian deli, I think they buy the cake from somewhere. I've seen it in other Russian delis as well. 108 is farther from the subway, you should try first in delis on Queens Blvd and if you can't find it check out 108 st.

I tried the Cong Ting Tou and it was delicious. I also tried their Clams in Black Bean sauce which was pretty good too. I'm frustrated a bit because of the language barrier I can try only some of the dishes, many are not translated in English and I'm sure they're delicious, but I'll work through the menu somehow.

Thanks. You made it sound like I'm a bad parent. Just being realistic.. Let's face it, not many adults out for a quiet meal Saturday night are especially eager to share the restaurant with a noisy 2-year old.
We ended up at Il Poeta on Metropolitan Blvd. As soon as we stepped in my son wanted out, so I ended up walking around with him for 30 minutes till the rest of the family ordered and had dinner. Food was good, we had:
- Tagliolini del Poeta , very good
- Penne al Salmone Affumicato, good, nothing special
- Pollo spezzatino con olive, capperi , pomodoro ciliegino in salsa alla senape - again, very good.
- the bread and the olive oil spread from the house were very good as well.

Any recs for a classic Italian restaurant where our 2 year toddler would piss off as few people as possible. Not too expensive if possible.

Spicy & Tasty question
The front counter is like a deli with cold foods. You walk in point to stuff and take it with you or eat it there. They have Celery & Tofu dish which is very good, a Spicy Tendon and all sort of other stuff.

Southern Spice: seems to be getting better and better
I ordered takeout 2-3 weeks ago. The stuffed peppers were good, but the Chicken 65 and the Lamb Varuval were absolutely fantastic, flavorful, spicy. Plan on trying other things on the menu as well.

Spicy and Tasty--help with ordering fish and other dishes
The "Fresh Filet in Fresh Hot Pepper" dish is magnificient. Soft, white, buttery fish in a spicy, slightly sweet sauce. My only other experience with Szechuan cuisine was Chengdu Heaven but Spicy and Tasty was just on another level.
Vegetarian at Golden Mall?
Some of the staples there would fit their diet.
The cold Liang Pi salad from the Xi'an stall, has no meat if I remember well.
From Chengdu Heaven there is a delicious "Fish and tofu" dish. Second in the 3rd column of the menu. I think they have a picture of it. This is in a big container, enough for 2 people.
They also have the Ma Po Do Fu, I didn't detect any meat in it, seemed entirely tofu-based but I leave other hounds to confirm if it has meat. It is the second to last item on the 3rd column of the menu. They will recognize it if you ask and they have a picture of it on the wall.

I'm excited to break this news first: Chengdu Heaven has added beautiful pictures of their dishes and most of them have English translation. You can see them as you walk in, they have even more pictures inside the stall.
I don't know if it is good news or bad news. Maybe the depression finally forced them to try translate the menu and add pictures. I hope they stay open.
need help with dinner in flushing
3-4 weeks ago the dumpling place in Golden Shopping Mall was open. This was after it had been closed by the Health Department. It looked like the owners cleaned up and updated the place a bit. I wondered if it was the same place, same owners.

Yeah, I've had those a few months ago. They would be even better if she would put together like 4-6 of them. I guess you can buy 3 of them and eat them together. And she is really pretty BTW.

I had this dish tonight - middle column, second from the bottom - it definitely looked like you described it. Long white gelatinous noodle-like stuff in chilli oil with peppercorn, scallions etc. They were pretty good, they gave you that pleasant numbing feeling they were a bit salty though.
This was my 3rd attempt -all of them on Thursday around 6:30-7:00 PM - to eat from the 3rd column, but the chef wasn't there again. What I understood from the 2 women is that the chef is usually there in the morning, not in the afternoon. They told me to try on Tuesday, I will confirm next week if he stays that late.
