Since no one else will bother, I'll toss my two cents in. My two favorite hippy vegetarian breakfast joints are the Keystone Cafe and the Morning Glory Cafe. They're probably not going to win any awards, but I think the food is pretty solid. The Glenwood is another breakfast place that we like. Off the Waffle is pretty amazing. It's waffles, but with a twist.

Organic produce

And if you want local, you can always go down to Belle Chasse and hit up Becnel's for some local produce...they supply Whole Foods....but you'll pass at least one refinery on the way so there's that....

Vegan Kings Cake

New Orleans King Cake is VERY different from a French one. If you've made cinnamon rolls vegan, just use the same dough and instead of cutting into rolls, elongate and make it oval shaped. Bake it and cover with a sugar glaze and sprinkle with green, gold, and purple sugar. That's a relatively close approximation of a standard NOLA cake.

Foods you wish the big 'fast-food' drive-through would offer.

Our Jimmy John's has a drive thru and it's the BEST!

The hard debate over nutrition standards for food stamp benefits

That's patently false. WIC recipients get the choice of a number of items on each voucher. GALLONS of fresh milk, blocks of real cheese, a variety of cereals (including a few "fun" sugar bombs), a variety of juices. WIC is meant to be supplementary, not complete. I've been on several sides of this. I grew up on the food stamp/not qualified line and worked in a grocery store in college. I worked with the mentally ill for 12 years. I provided a LOT of education on how to better spend the food stamps. But because no one wants to pay for this kind of education for all, we have the rampant waste, inefficiency, and kids still go hungry because their parents made bad choices. I like the voucher idea because it does provide choice in a category (Meat, veg, grains, etc) but limits someone from blowing it all on cases of pop (I think there should even be a "other" voucher where you can get limited pop, junk, etc.). It doesn't have to be all or nothing. WIC has plenty of choice, just as a voucher system for FS would. Yes, applying for benefits is a nightmare. Yes, living on food stamps is awful. But the goal of the program is to FEED people, not to provide mom cases of Monster Java at the beginning of the month and then complain that the kids have no food at the end (true story).

The hard debate over nutrition standards for food stamp benefits

I've been saying for years that the Food Stamp program should be vouchers like WIC. I was a grocery store cashier in college and the stuff people would get on FS was amazing! For every one family that would actually buy food and make the most of their dollars there would be twenty buying complete crap. Not just pop, but the most expensive pop one can buy (cases of Mt. Dew....standard). I have also been saying for years that it would never change because big AG will never allow crap with a lot of CORN products (everything processed, at this point) to go off of the FS program. Everyone wants less welfare unless it's big AG profiting off of it.......

So much for tip shaming, now we've moved on to messy kid shaming

There is no way I would leave that for someone else to clean up. It's not the mother of all messes....but still...I would take the time to pick up the pieces. I probably wouldn't have chosen a scone either, as they are notoriously crummy and you're just asking for a mess...but to each their own.

Everyone in this story is just wrong. The parent should work with her kids on not eating like savages. IF they make a mess, help pick it up for crying out loud! No restaurant is responsible for picking up after my child when eating, especially if the mess is at all excessive. My daughter is almost three and has NEVER made a mess like that in public. And when she does, I pick it up. The restaurant wins no points by posting the picture of the mess. I get that it's annoying, but seriously not a good business practice! UGH all around....

Great recommendations from Bada Bing! Uptown Kitchen's sister restaurant, The Mark, might be a good bet as well. I have not dined at The Mark, but have heard good things.

Chicago in August

Places I've been to and liked (I'm a lacto-ovo vegetarian):

Green Zebra (this would be vegetarian fine dining)
Chicago Diner (Meat free since 83!) in Lakeview. Diner food. LOVE the vegan "milkshakes" here.
Native Foods Cafe. This is a small chain with three locations in Chicago. Their food is vegan and outstanding (and those two words don't always go together, so there's that...)
Handlebar. Funky bar with terrific food. Lots of Mexican-inspired fare.
For Deep Dish: Lou Malnati's. Hands down. The all-veggie pie, which I think is "The Malnati" is superb. In fact, I'm salivating for one as I type....

As you know, you probably can get veg fare at just about any restaurant...these are just a few suggestions of places that do all or mostly all veg fare.....

redfish sticker shock

Good to know. We live in Indiana now and he catches mostly bass and crappie.....

I just remember him running into these huge schools of redfish in his Lafitte skiff and bringing in sooooo many in a very short time span. I don't think they exist in those numbers any more....

redfish sticker shock

My dad used to catch tons of redfish when we were kids, before blackened redfish was a "thing". We were pretty poor and ate redfish a LOT. I didn't mind, though.....it was definitely my favorite fish.....
$50 a fish! I'll have to tell him about this....he'll get a kick out of it....

Three Generations/Four Days in Chicago

You really can't go wrong with the Bongo Room for breakfast. The South Loop location would be the most convenient for you and is a shortish walk to the Field Museum. There's also a Lou Malnati's in the South Loop that we've visited for lunch when out about about at the Art Institute.

I think the correct answer is, "ALL OF THEM". Tillamook cheddar is just fantastic and the Vintage Extra Sharp is indeed a most delicious cheese.

Vegan In Indianapolis

Have you been to Spice Nation on Lafayette Road (West Side) yet? Absolutely outstanding vegetarian and vegan Indian buffet. Everything is clearly marked and they even have all vegan buffet nights (I think Thursdays). They will ask you if you are vegan so they bring out the correct dosa and naan. Spectacular!
