HIP COFFEE PLACE "A LA STUMPTOWN" IN THE QUARTER OR UPTOWN?
PJ's is the chain in the New Orleans area. It's okay, but not spectacular.
I like Fair Grinds off of Esplanade in Mid City adjacent to the fair grounds: http://fairgrinds.com/
Why do no national burger chains have veggie burgers?
Burger King. I hate them, but they do have the BK Veggie, even here in rural Indiana. It's a Morningstar patty.
If we're going to go into casual dining, you can get either a Gardenburger or a Boca patty on any of Red Robin's burgers. I. LOVE. IT!
Burgerville (a PNW chain) has a spicy black bean burger on their menu.
how to make dairy free rice pudding that tastes like dairy?
I second the Puerto Rican rice pudding using coconut cream. My grandmother's was outstanding, but I don't have the recipe!
Best Vegetarian products:
I was going to come back and mention Soyrizo. I really like the Cacique brand because it's authentic and dirt cheap (compared to the Frieda's). So versatile!
As for sausage....I have yet to find anything I could make a decent gumbo with. I do like the Field Roast quite a bit...but pricey and I have to drive an hour to get it.
Best Vegetarian products:
Morningstar's corndogs are my husband's vice. He wolfs down the entire box in one sitting.
Vegetarian and Vegan Cookbooks
All of those....
and Vegan with a Vengance by Isa Chandra Moskowitz
and Vegan Soul Kitchen by Bryant Terry
Best Vegetarian products:
Morningstar is about the worst. I'll only go for it in a pinch. I really like the Gardein stuff, including the Chick'n Scallopini and the Mandarin Chick'n. I also am a fan of Quorn's products, but it's pricey in my area.
What discontinued products do you miss?
I can't believe they haven't brought back Bacon Cheetos.....I remember them from the early 80s and they were fantastic!
driving from chicago to new orleans---to eat southern ill, northern ms?
We're making this trip in a couple of weeks as well, I-57 to I-55. We're leaving a little late in order to hit the Firefly Grill in Effingham on the way down for lunch. We had a fantastic lunch there on another trip.
South Bend -- Recommendable Pork Tenderloin Sandwich?
I hear the grilled tenderloin at the Streamliner in Rochester is divine....but I have no opinion on this since I'm a vegetarian....
BUT....I found a convo on Yelp: http://www.yelp.com/topic/south-bend-pork-tenderloin-sandwich
I have seen a couple reports on Miles Lab and everything there looks top notch. That may be the place.....

Thanksgiving Day on I-90 (Indiana or Ohio)
I hear the Chubby Trout in Elkhart (off the SR 19 exit) is very good, but I'm not sure if they're open for the holiday: http://www.chubbytrout.com
To be honest, there really isn't much off of the toll-road in Indiana unless you stop in South Bend or Elkhart. Likewise, in Ohio, the turnpike goes to the south of Toledo. You might want to search those cities and call around previous suggestions.
All of I-90 through Indiana and half of Ohio is toll road. If it comes down to it, don't bother with the toll plazas in Indiana, they are disgusting. Most of the ones in Ohio are now brand new and aren't that bad for food court food. They'll all be open in a pinch for sure.
Sorry I don't have better suggestions. I tried to find a list of restaurants open in South Bend, but was unsuccessful...

Best birthday cake in South Bend, IN?
Macri's Bakery on Niles Ave, on the East Race. I got my wedding cake there and it was fantastic! I have also had several other cakes there for birthdays and anniversaries and they do them right. Best buttercream in the world....
You can also check into Indulgence on Edison Road, but I can't vouch for their cakes...
Anything worthy in South Bend, IN?
Corndance Tavern on Grape Road in Mishawaka is spectacular in terms of fresh ingredients, interesting preparation. It's the sister restaurant to the Corndance Cafe in Culver and both are outstanding.

Lemon Chicken Rice Soup in Michiana/Southbend area
Christo's in Plymouth has a decent Avgolemono. Pretty much any Greek family restaurant will have it on the menu sometime during the week. In SB, there's a Greek owned family restaurant on S. Michigan near Ireland Road called Angelo's...they might have it. I'd also try Alexander's Grill on SR 23 near Notre Dame.
Road trip from St. Paul to Madison, WI on 94- would love foodie sidetrack suggestions! [Moved from Minneapolis-St. Paul Board]
We really enjoyed a nice lunch at the Nucleus Cafe in Eau Claire, WI. I had a blue crab sandwich that was divine!

Visiting Notre Dame tomorrow (Monday and Tuesday)
I'm not a huge fan of Tippecanoe Place. Overpriced, and the food isn't very good. Very stuffy and past its prime. I really can't recommend any Asian other than *maybe* Siam Thai downtown, which would be walking distance from the hotel. For "regional" , the places that come to mind are:
1. Corndance Tavern on Grape Road in Mishawaka. I'm a huge fan of the original Corndance Cafe in Culver, IN. Great place for a variety of meats, seafood, and pastas. http://mishawaka.corndance.com
2. Uptown Kitchen in Granger and the Mark at Eddy Street Commons by ND. Both are run by the same guy and offer great food in a casual environment. The Mark is definitely closer by cab and might be nice for lunch.

Hope that helps. N. Indiana doesn't really have a cuisine, per se...but these are some newer restaurants that are trying hard to bring fresh, local ingredients to the forefront.

Indian Restaurants (South Bend/Mishawaka)
It's a sad state of affairs when it comes to Indian food in SB/Mish. We loved Taj as well, it was definitely our favorite. India Garden's curries are too soupy and the flavors are just meh in my opinion. We just have the buffet when we're REALLY jonesing for some Indian. There's Taj Mahal in Fort Wayne that is *okay*...it's not up to Taj standards, but edible. My husband likes it way more than I do. We usually do the buffet there as well. We also tried a place in Chesterton, it was also *okay* but a bit pricey. There is a place in Merrillville called the Taste of India, but I have not been yet.
I REALLY wish Taj would come back.....as do the majority of our friends...
On a completely unrelated note: Have you been to the Corndance Tavern in Mishawaka yet? I am a HUGE fan of the Corndance Cafe in Culver and am excited to try their new establishment. Their food is, in my opinion, the best in the entire region....the Pear Ravioli is AMAZING.

Columbus - Need dinner restaurant
Dirty Franks is within walking distance on 4th street. It's a small bar that serves hot dogs, fresh cut fries, etc. We absolutely love it!

A weekend in Cleveland
We stopped at Melt on a Sunday on the way home once and even at 2:30 in the afternoon, we still had an hour wait. It was well worth it though, the food was fantastic and I'd definitely make it a point to stop .
South of South Bend, IN?
I hear that Buffalo Rose's Pizza in Lakeville decent, but I've never been there so I really can't vouch. Bad thing is that they're only open for dinner. That's about all I'd even come close to recommending, as the other restaurants are a Subway and some hometown joint that I hear is horrible.

If I were you, I would stop by Bamber Superette on Mishawaka Ave and pick up some items for a picnic....
Columbus, Indiana recommendations?
If you're willing to take a scenic 30 minute drive, I'd recommend the Story Inn on the south side of Brown County State Park. Story was an abandoned town that was purchased and turned into a bed and breakfast with a restaurant serving breakfast, lunch and dinner. We had a wonderful breakfast there last fall when visiting the area. They have FANTASTIC coffee, locally processed.

The 59 Best Breakfast Places In US..........
Yeah, I saw this list before....and thought that any list that had Walker Brothers but didn't have Franks Diner in Kenosha was bunk. Also didn't like the chains listed at the end. It's as if they got lazy.
A recent review of Melt Bar & Grilled, Lakewood (Cleveland) Ohio
Yeah, we realized that, which prompted DH to say, "If you had read this yesterday, we totally would have driven to Cleveland this weekend!" I have a feeling there might be some kitchen experimentation along the lines of the Corny Beast soon....
A recent review of Melt Bar & Grilled, Lakewood (Cleveland) Ohio
We absolutely love Melt and we're planning on making a detour on our way back to Indiana in July to partake. I read my husband the description of the Corny Beast, and he replied, "that sounds like something I would die for....." Thanks for the great review!
Milwaukee (and surrounding areas) for good vegetarian cuisine? :)
Several places that have choices for vegetarians (My husband and I are vegetarians and we visit a non-vegetarian couple in Milwaukee a couple times a year):
Maxie's Southern Comfort, http://www.maxies.com/milwaukee/index.html :Has several good BBQ Tofu dishes.
Comet Cafe, http://www.thecometcafe.com : LOTS of veggie options.
Beans and Barley http://www.beansandbarley.com : More of a breakfast/lunch place.
Juniper 61, http://juniper61.com : Not as straightforward with the veggie options, but what they have is excellent.
