Private room for 15 for small wedding celebration in Toronto -- please help

We finally decided to hold our small wedding party at the Park Lane private room at Colborne Lane, and we're really glad we did. The food was delicious, the service was great (attentive yet invisible), the ambiance was perfect, and everyone had a great time. They were very accommodating and very professional, and helped us have a really special day.

Thanks everyone for your advice!

Thank you, I agree it's a lovely place and setting, I was there on a group event once. From what I remember, as you say the food was not excellent, so I am going to try and find better food. But will keep it in mind in case I can't.

Hello, and thanks for all the tips! Because this is going to be very soon (er, in about two weeks) I don't think I have time to look for caterers, etc. I will check Centro and Oro.

Thank you! I have just asked about availability. Would you know by any chance about any of their other rooms? They seem to have others for about the same party size.
Thanks again!

Private room for 15 for small wedding celebration in Toronto -- please help

Hello,

I need some help with ideas for restaurants with nice small private rooms. I have thus far considered George (only its 12 people, though, and their next bigger room is too big) and Origin (I love the food, but it seems more like a club than a charming wedding restaurant).

I guess we're looking at something beautiful and elegant, but not outrageously expensive. We looked at Auberge du Pommier, but their rooms are also too large (45 people sitting). If you have any ideas for a special place, please let me know.

Thank you!

Looking for restaurant for special occasion in Toronto

We are looking to have dinner after a small wedding. Twelve guests in total. We would like to go a place that feels warm and special, with good food and not too expensive in the downtown area. Any ideas are welcome!

cool place for brunch in Kitsilano?

Thanks guys, now I have brunch places to check out for the next two or three weekends!

Spanish food in Vancouver?

I don't have a car... on the positive side, it will be a good excuse to explore the East side. Thanks!

cool place for brunch in Kitsilano?

Sorry I am adding another post but I just moved to Vancouver and I am in need of recommendations...

Thus far I've been to Cosmic Sophie's which I found OK but I am looking for something that has good food and is-more trendy.

Thanks!

Spanish food in Vancouver?

many thanks. I will try Oyama and the South China Seas Trading Co. and will go further east if I can't find what I am looking for.

BTW I never heard about piquillo peppers from Peru... Spanish piquillo peppers are grown in one small area where this variety exists. Other peppers do not taste quite the same. I am curious to see how these Peruvian peppers taste like, where can I find them, paulj?

Spanish food in Vancouver?

thank you! would you happen to know of any place close to kitsilano?

Spanish food in Vancouver?

Where can I find Spanish ingredients in Vancouver? I am thinking of Spanish chorizo, piquillo peppers,... is there any grocery store that carries them?

Thanks!

Proposing in Barcelona next week

Another possibility around the Barri Gotic close to the Cathedral that is quite nice is the Cafe de l'Academia -- that is if they have tables outside already. In that case it's a beautiful setting, I'd say romantic -- it's a medieval small street, very charming. The interior of the restaurant is in contrast very plain. The food is very good. Not an upscale restaurant, but well within your budget.

As PBSF notes above, if you want amazing food -- an upscale restaurant (romantic or not), then 100E is tight -- usually the shorter tasting menus start at about 50-60E, and that does not include drinks (it usually doesn't include taxes either).

Cooking in Madrid or Barcelona?

I think Barcelona is more happening, and more fun, partly because of the beach. Madrid gets quite hot in the summer so madrilen~os escape to the coast for holidays as much as they can...

Madrid might be a better spot for traditional cooking, but I would imagine (don't know any place though) there should be lots of places to learn traditional cooking in Barcelona too.

Boquria Market: Bar Boqueria & Kiosko Universal

The escamarlans look lovely. I miss those.

The desert sounds like 'cuajada', 'quallada' in Catalan. Was that the name?

Barcelona inexpensive?

this is not luxurious at all. It is charming though. sort of traditional food. the tasting menu is simple yet nice. i can't remember the exact price, might be about 20 euros, without drinks. you can email them and ask, the simplest tasting menu (which was quite a bit of food already) was called 'tres tastets' i think. I doubt one can get very good 'mama' food, or any very good food for that matter, for less than 15 euros in bcn. unless of course you go for sandwiches or pizza...

Barcelona inexpensive?

'inexpensive' is a bit subjective, but i would suggest El Pla de la Garsa:

I would recommend the tasting menu, the setting is quite nice too. I think it is good to get an idea of traditional Catalan food (most of it is), and the price is very moderate. Also the service is friendly, which unfortunately is not that common in Spain... down-to-earth place.

Barcelona inexpensive?

restaurants are forced by law to offer a set price menu for lunch. Not for dinner though. Is this what you mean? what do you mean by 'daily menu'?

Barcelona inexpensive?

'agua' is OK, but it wouldn't be on my list of favourites. Given that you're going in April and it will not be hot, I would pass and go somewhere else, perhaps in the Gothic quarter. More charming.

Best bets on the Danforth

Pantheon!!!!!!!!!!!

the decor is tacky but the food is great and it's superauthentic. Order a couple of starters (calamari is great, so is the 'flaming' cheese, can't remember the name) and the delicious lamb chops. The lamb chops come with a Greek salad. All this is enough food for two people to share. On top of that they'll bring you complimentary desert.

Barcelona inexpensive?

Nice list. Quimet & Quimet is an interesting place but I wouldn't go there for lunch, first the place is tiny and second it is a bit pricey to have lunch there, I see it more as a place to go for a couple of tapas.

tasting menu at Cinc Sentits: i believe there are two options, a shorter one for 40 euros and a longer one for about 60 euros, without drinks.

re breakfast, there is no tradition of 'nice' breakfast there. We typically have a pastry and a 'cortado' (small latte). but you could drop by one of Viena's sandwich places and get a nice sandwich.

Places on my radar in Madrid and Barcelona -- good choices?

I totally recommend Alkimia. Of the new creative Catalan cuisine, it's my favourite, quality/price. I also really liked Sauc -- it is a bit more grounded on traditional dishes, yet very modern. They are both upscale but not too pricey.

You can combine a visit to Alkimia with a visit to Sagrada Familia, it's nearby.

If you find yourselves in the Gothic quarter, I like the Cafe de l'Academia. Nicer in the summer, but still the food is good. Or go for a drink to the Museu Textil in that area too (the food is not so good though).

BARCELONA

I was in Barcelona last week and tried Bestiari. It is not bad, but I was disappointed. I ordered a 'cruixent de verdures' (crunchy vegetables) and it turned out being tempura, which is fine, but wasn't anything special. Then I ordered beef carpaccio, and it was supersalty. My friend's was also extremely salty. My other friends were a bit more lucky with their choices, especially the tuna tataki seemed good, but I would not recommend this place for someone visiting Barcelona with limited time. In my opinion, it is mediocre.

I would recommend to head to El Pla de la Garsa and have one of the tasting menus. It is also inexpensive, but a better selection, better quality, and even larger quantity.

Authentic Spanish style chorizo, made here...

I just think the other chorizo they sell tastes better, I find it more tender, so it tastes better when cooked. But I only use it for cooking.

If you like cooking chorizo eaten raw like that on manchego and bread, you would love 'sobrasada' -- that is if you ever find it in Toronto (I have never seen any here)...

First Date... Need help

As a Spaniard I have to say Torito is not good. They serve ceviche! I didn't even find it cozy. However it is not expensive in case that's what you're looking for.

I agree with Snarf: 93 Harbord is a great suggestion. It has a romantic, kind of exotic atmosphere; also every time I have been there the food has been great.

Riedel: leaded vs unleaded wine glasses

fantastic, thanks a lot!
