Where to go for what my 70 y/o Mom thinks is a "fun" meal? But foodies need to be appeased, too.
Does anyone know if Theater Bar in Tribeca serves food?
Crispo... Apizz...dinner with my boyfriend's parents in my city
Scarpetta was much quieter than Crispo! I suppose its where you're seated at the latter, we were in the garden room in the back which was insanely loud. Probably some of the smaller rooms in front might be quieter.
For what you described, I think Scarpetta sounds perfect. I'd also heavily recommend L'Artusi. If you're not set on the neighborhood, try Peasant.

recs for child-friendly battery park city restaurants?
PJ Clarke's is a workable option if your kids are being fussy and you don't want to travel. It's a New York institution, though this location lacks all of the charm of the original on 3rd Avenue.
If you're willing to go a bit further, Locanda is fantastic - but I always manage to rack up one hell of a bill when I go. And Saturday night will be insane, probably not the best option with a kid. VietCafe is not super authentic, perhaps, but has well-executed Vietnamese and is much more upscale than some of the dingy Chinatown spots. For cheap eats, Max is a cozy, basic Italian spot on Duane Street (next to Tokyo Bay). Petite Abeille (Belgian on West Broadway) is great, and The Odeon (brasserie on West Broadway) is another NYC classic, with better food than PJ Clarkes.
Also recommend Estancia 460 on Greenwich and Desbrosses. Argentine / Italian influenced and the owner Stacey has young kids so they're super accommodating... but its more of a lunch crowd and dinner tends to be thin, so its not "loud".

Del Posto. Ouch!
I've given up on the whole Batali empire. Babbo has become a joke, in my opinion, certainly not worth even a quarter of the time and effort it takes to secure a 5:30pm reservation. A month from now. *sigh*

Devils on Horseback? [Ldn]
I love Devils on Horseback and have heard about them being a "classic British bar snack" - and yet the only two places I've found them are The Hind's Head in Bray... and in NYC at the Spotted Pig.
Does anyone know of an upscale (or downscale!) pub in London that actually serves them??
London Marylebone Questions
Providores, Providores, Providores!! Do it!!
For a more casual gastropub in the area, I'd go with Coco Momo over the Beehive. Food's ok there, but I had one of the worst experiences of my life at their recently opened sister restaurant Osteria dell'Angolo, and have put the whole group on probation.
For real ale, check out Angel in the Fields pub, on Thayer Street at the very bottom of Marylebone High Street (around the corner from the Golden Hind).
Winebar-ish place for a first date
Wholeheartedly second The Room, or The Otherroom, on Perry St. at Washington, though as stated they get slammed on the weekends. (Skip Anotherroom in Tribeca) But I can't think of a better "second-stop spot" if the night is going well and you want to extend it a bit!
Other favorites are Gottino or The Bourgeois Pig, depending on the vibe you're looking for
[London] Lamb Sandwich
I'm a fan of the lamb @ Burley's Salt Beef, in the City or @ Canary Wharf
(though the roast beef is even better!)
the 12.5% service charge
Is the "cover charge" just another loony London loophole? Like the "membership" requirement for a 24-hr license. Some way of getting a different liquor permit or better operating hours or something?
That's the only way a £1.50 charge would make sense at a Michelin.
Only ONE night in London for a special meal, not TOO pricey, but nice, maybe romantic, etc….good food is a MUST.
If you're coming on a Friday night, make sure you hit up Monmouth Coffee on Saturday morning! Just up the road from your hotel, has a vibe a lot like Jack's (though much smaller). Its closed on Sundays.
The Electric - Disappointing! [London]
The Breakfast Club has a location in Soho, so that might work - but it doesn't look like they serve Benedict there?? I wonder if they can make it "off menu"...
Will definitely check out Bistrotheque, and possibly Blue Legume too, if I wake up ready for a long bus ride!
The Electric - Disappointing! [London]
Went to The Electric in Notting Hill on Sunday, after reading a number of good marks for its "American-style" brunch.
Total disappointment!!
1) Hostess quoted us a 20 minute wait, sent us to the bar for coffee, then forgot about us. After 45 minutes, I checked back, and after some frenzied consultation, we were finally seated. At least the coffee was good.
2) Service was brusque and disaffected, but I'm coming to accept that from London, especially the trendy places. But even as a New Yorker, this seemed over the top.
3) Food was unremarkable. My eggs benedict had one well-poached egg and one that was basically hard-boiled. How you could so massively overcook only half the eggs on one plate takes a special talent. A bacon/egg sandwich was tasty, but was presented unadorned, a lonely flop in the middle of a too-large plate. 10p worth of fresh greens on the side would have completely altered our perception of the dish. Chips were so heavily salted, I thought they had fried the Dead Sea.
All that at a price point too high to warrant the additional annoyance of a trip to Notting Hill.
Any other recommendations for a decent benedict? Have Oyster, will travel!
Any cool restaurants for teens in NYC?
Maybe TWC is different, but Landmarc Tribeca is walk-ins only...??
I think Cafeteria or Eatery would be good choices. I'd second the suggestion for Cowgirl in the WVill.
How about a Murray Hill place? Blockheads? Rio Grande?
London: Fish n Chips - Without the Fish?
Excellent, thanks for the info everyone... sounds like I can probably make do with a greek salad and a plate of chips. (never thought I'd see that combo!)
I hope she realises the sacrifices I make! haha, maybe I'll just make her stand in line at La Relais afterwards!
London: Fish n Chips - Without the Fish?
As a transplanted NY'er, my girlfriend is coming to visit and I'd like to take her to a serious fish n chips place - but I don't eat fish. I've read about the Golden Hind as the place to go, but can't seem to find a menu online.
My ask is this - what is the best London fish & chip shop that also serves chicken, or some other non-fish dish??
Thanks!
