Laid-off: how to spend my time cooking??

I too, found myself in the same predicament as you. I also decided that this would be a good time to do some baking and canning. I started off by canning tomatoes then I progressed to making jams; strawberry, raspberry and rhubarb. After that I got into pickles; kosher dills, sweet pickles, pickled cauliflower and pickled jalepenos. Next it was on to baking, some thing I have had problems with in the past but I forged ahead anyway. I am partial to rye bread and I finally found a recipe that results in a good quality loaf of rye. Naan was another I just had to try and it was the easiest bread I have ever made. Parker House rolls are always a hit and easy to make since decent dinner rolls from the store just don't cut it.

My most recent forray has been into sausage making. This is something I have wanted to do for some time but I have been a little leary about trying it. I started by making breakfast sausage which was really easy and then I stepped it up and have made two batches of Italian sausage. Both turned out really well and next it's on to Polish sausage.

As you can tell I have alot of time on my hands but I am sure you find it very rewarding. Best of luck to you!

Anniversary dinner-Tampa/St.Pete/Clearwater areas

My wife and I are celebrating our anniversary in a couple of weeks and we are looking for out of the ordinary dining. Indian, Korean, Carribean, something other than the usual steak or italian that we usally go to. I have checked the boards and i get mixed recs for Indian and some recs maybe outdated so any suggestions would be appreciated!
Thanks!

North Georgia, Blue Ridge area recs..

Thank you for your replies. I have been doing quite a bit of research into the area and I will report back after the 26th.

Being a rural area I am not looking for fine dining just decent food with acceptable service. We will be heading East to NC for a day trip so we will probabally stop at the Dillard House.

North Georgia, Blue Ridge area recs..

My family and I will be spending a week in the Blue Ridge area and we have never been in this part of Georgia before. So, any help with casual restaurants or any must see attractions would be appreciated.

Thank you in advance!!

Tampa area-ham pies etc...

Yes, they are an Italian Easter dinner staple. We did order some of each from New Jersey and usually my mother-in-law usually makes them herself, but we are having a difficult time locating them in the Tampa area.

Tampa area-ham pies etc...

My mother-in-law is looking to purchase either ham pies, rice pies or ricotta cheese pies. We live in the Tampa area so if anyone knows where these might be purchased she would be eternally greatful. Thanks in advance for your help!

Homemade Rootbeer...anybody make their own?

I have looked for recipes to make my own rootbeer without success. I don't want an extract, I want to try and make it from scratch.

If anyone has any suggestions or experience...?

Thanks in advance.

Detroit area hot dogs, not restaurants!

Thank all of you for your replies! The spiciness of the hot dogs is what set them apart form the others eg:Kowalski's. I will have to give the others a try, if I can get them online since I am in Florida. But I will keep the all in mind!

Thanks again.

Rochester NY area hot dogs...help!

A little background first, my mother -in -laws late neighbors spent summers in the Rochester area and they would always bring back hot dogs that my wife loved.

The hot dogs were white in color with natural casings but the name of the company that made them escapes my wife and her mother....Any suggestions?

Thanks in advance!

Detroit area hot dogs, not restaurants!

Many years ago my Detroit relatives would bring treats from the big city with them when they would visit us in Alpena. One in particular was a hot dog. It had a natural casing and a slightly spicy flavor. Unfortunately my relatives (great aunt and great uncle) have since passed on and no one in my family can remember where these hot dogs came from. I don't believe they were Kowalski hot dogs.

I know this was 30 plus years ago ,but some of you hounds may remember such a wonderful hotdog!!

Tampa Area-Italian Bakery/Deli's

My wife is a New Jersey native and used to the authentic Italian bakeries/deli's that she had back home. Does any place like this exist in the Tampa/St. Pete areas? Thank you in advance for any help!
