FOODIE ON A DIET :( ... Need Healthy Restaurants
I really enjoyed True Food Kitchen when I feel like I need a good healthy meal. There is a location in Santa Monica and Newport Beach (Fashion Island) as well. I particularly like the fresh juices and the salad dressings there.
Bludso's Texas Sampler - will it hold?
They do pack it pretty well in shrink wrap so it should be good for probably an 1 to 2 tops. The sides are the problem, which you will probably need a cooler and then reheat. Sauce on the side so it keeps its integrity a bit more?
The hard part is smelling the que the whole ride without opening and eating a piece. You will need the discipline of a Buddhist monk for that tast alone. I suggest ordering some ribs tips to munch on since the drive will be a nightmare. : )
Last Meal in LA? Leaving after 20 Years
He does like Shake Shack but the lines alone are unbearable for him. The crowds of tourists really annoy him so he avoids them at all costs unless I am in town to do all the touristy stuff. He is not a big time foodie but I am slowly converting him. I got him addicted to Travel Channel and Food Network. One of his favorite shows currently is Man vs Food.
It could be nostalgia, but I think it is more that he is lazy and does not want to buy a metropass to wait in line for an hour. : )
I don't know what it is about In n Out. My brother even has to take burgers back to his co-workers. They even want day old animal fries which to me sounds disgusting, especially warm you reheat it. He literally takes the lettuce and tomato out for them and everything. I eat it maybe once a year, tops.
Last Meal in LA? Leaving after 20 Years
My brother used to live here and now lives in NYC and the first thing he does it gets In n Out straight from the plane. Then he usually craves Mexican food like tacos and burritos. Oh yeah, and he goes to Hot Dog on a Stick because corn dogs are almost impossible to find. lol

Midweek Lunch in Walnut area near Mt. SAC
I think if you take Amar to Nogales, then head South you can make it in 10 minutes. Be aware though, Rowland Heights is always full of traffic and the college can be a pain at times.
It is definitely worth the drive. I particularly like Happy Harbour for very good dim sum. Another note, this place can get packed at times and depending on the number in your party, there could be a wait.
Midweek Lunch in Walnut area near Mt. SAC
If you can make it, take Grand to the I-10 and get off on Azusa and head North to Mr Pollo. They have great Peruvian chicken and other dishes. The place is not very great for a meeting though but the food is awesome.
Also, if you like Korean BBQ/Tofu there is a decent spot called Jeun Tong Tofu House on Amar and Nogales. This might be a great choice if the weather cools down a bit.
Both of these places are not kind on ambiance but the food more than makes up for it.
ISO Fresh Morels
Hollywood Farmers Market has them. The place is near the southern most section of the market.
Umami Burger Costa Mesa - any visits?
I was going to go but the line was outrageous, especially for burgers I have already tried at other locations.
Which high end places (twist, la atelier,etc...) have a bar menu?
Definitely check out Guy Savoy's Bubbles and Bites bar. It is less formal and the menu items are from the main dining room. The burger is amazing.
Deciding between Mesa Grill, Spago, and Mon Ami Gabi... NEED HELP!!!
All three of those places are very good lunch spots. Best atmosphere has to be Mon Ami Gabi because you are literally sitting on the strip and can watch the Bellagio fountains but food is just okay.
The best food can be found at Spago which is great for lunch or dinner but might have the worst atmosphere, unless you are into eating in a mall setting with people passing by. The pasta dishes are amazing.
Mesa Grill is a great lunch spot. Atmosphere is okay but the waiters pretty much mention Bobby Flay like he is there all the time and some of the food is hit or miss. I love the chopped salad and the shrimp tamale. Some of my other favorites there are the shrimp tacos and the grits (omg the grits) but that is only available for weekend brunch.
game meat in orange county
Only stuff I have seen fresh are probably the oxtail and quail. It is rare to find game meats fresh.
Best gourmet ice cream and patisserie?
Just hit up both Mother Moo's and Carmela since they are pretty close to each other. Grab some vanilla at Mother Moo's and Strawberry Buttermilk at Carmela.
game meat in orange county
Meat House. They have locations in Costa Mesa, Brea, and Mission Viejo.
Carne Asada Burrito or Taco in Los Angeles
Most places use plate or flap or even top sirloin because of cost. Also, making carne asada from skirt is essentially a waste of money as flap has the same nutty flavor but is less tender thus cutting it up for tacos.
I mean, if you really want skirt just go to Border Grill and get the skirt steak and pay about $25. There is a reason why places are not using skirt steak because it is just too good of a piece of meat for a taco.
American-Chinese food is real Chinese food?
The author would have more merit had she actually been Chinese and not American.
I think her big fault in this article is calling orange chicken authentic Chinese cuisine.
Portos Bakery Cafe Lunch -- Downey Location
The guava cheese danish is my favorite item there. I have been to all three locations and they are all identical as far as quality goes. Parking is much more convenient at the Downey location though. I usually go there and get two Cubanos and 10 guava cheese danishes.
I have never, ever, had a bad meal at ____________and I have eaten there over a dozen times!
I have recently figured out (took me all this time) is to actually order chili cheese fries with raw onions and a sandwich and insert the chili cheese fries into the sandwich. Is that wrong?
I have never, ever, had a bad meal at ____________and I have eaten there over a dozen times!
The Hat
In n Out
Joan's on Third (desserts only?)
Bludso's
Brent's
Pollo a la Brasa
Red Chili Beef Tamales at La Indiana Tamales
I like the tamales there but prefer La Moderna and La Moscota more. Still a very good tamale but for the area I prefer La Moscota. My favorite out of the three is La Moderna.
Carne Asada Burrito or Taco in Los Angeles
It is not rocket science. Carne asada is grilled steak. Most places use cheap chuck steak to keep the cost down which is why it is dry, a bit too acidic, and tough. Find a place that serves skirt, plate, or flap and your chances of getting better carne asada greatly increases.
And I thought Mexican food in general is supposed to be greasy.
Carne Asada Burrito or Taco in Los Angeles
I have to Tijuana's and they actually grill it on a char broiler. It is a good carne asada flavored with basically salt and a touch of lime. Like I said before, hit up Tacos San Pedro in Anaheim or Hawaiian Gardens, it is the best I have found in SoCal. The flautas especially since it is the same carne asada they use. It is grilled a la plancha, and is a very good quality flap meat they is only seasoned with salt. I highly advise going there if you like Tijuana in Pomona.
I also suggest getting the menudo (weekends) and you will see that almost every table has an order or two.
Carne Asada Burrito or Taco in Los Angeles
What are you talking about? Alberto's carne asada is disastrous at best. It is like the Farmer Boys of Mexican cuisine.
Carne Asada Burrito or Taco in Los Angeles
If you are up for a drive to Hawaiian Gardens, Tacos San Pedro has wonderful carne asada. There is alos a location in Anaheim on Lincoln. The carne asada is the meat to get here. I especially like the flautas because they put the same carne asada meat in those as well. I have been to Tijuanas Tacos in Pomona and the carne asada is good but the salsa there is a bit too tangy for me.
Mexican salsa?
I tried both the red and green today and you were right. The green is pretty darn good. The red was smokey but a bit bland. They had samples of all the salsas out so I got to try 3 different ones along with the guacamole. The green was definitely the best out of the bunch. It is not King Taco but it will do. Only real gripe I had was that there was a huge line just for salsa, cheese, and chorizo but lines don't really bug me so long as it is worth the wait.
Thanks for the rec.
