Easter in Amsterdam

Hi seal,

Easter will be pretty much business as usual. Good Friday is a regular working day, Easter Monday is a bank holiday, but many restaurants are closed on Mondays anyway.

You might spot an Easter special, like lamb, on top of the regular menu.

Amsterdam Restaurants for Valentine's Day

Hi Malebe,

Those are good questions and I believe the quote is from one of my earlier posts, so let me try to give you some more input.

I would say that Bistrot Neuf is different in that it's more of a traditional French bistro. It's much busier and the food is more old school French. It's also cheaper indeed.

Both Restaurant As and Marius have a Chez Panisse past. Assume you are aware of that and that's why they are on your list.

De Kas is usually most out of the way, but actually quite close since you are staying in Oosterpark. It may be weakest in terms of food quality, depending somewhat on the menu of that day. Like every year, they have a Valentine's special: http://www.restaurantdekas.nl/valentines-special

Marius is indeed at the other end of the city, but actually reachable in less than 30 minutes with tram 22.

Not sure how to answer whether De Witte Uyl will be too fussy for you...

Finally, you may also consider Balthazar's Keuken or Blauw aan de Wal. Both fit your menu requirement and are also on my list of Best Amsterdam Restaurants. Balthazar's is small, busy and fun, smack in the middle of the Jordaan. Blauw is probably the most expensive of all of the above. It's right in the middle of the red light district and certainly has a very romantic touch that fits Valentine's.

Hope this helps!

Amsterdam Food Near RAI and more

Hi Psiweaver,

The area around the RAI is a bit risky food wise, probably due to the many ad hoc visitors just looking for some food close by.

Quite close to the RAI is a great Italian traiteur on Scheldestraat that has amazing sandwiches and also serves pasta to eat in: http://www.feduzzi.nl/ On the corner of that same street there also is a good high-end fish restaurant, visaandeschelde.nl, and a simple Indonesian restaurantdjago.nl.

For great restaurants in the rest of the city check out my blog!

Breakfast in Amsterdam?

Hi Famke,

There are many options close to the Pulitzer.

For something hearty you could try Gartine on Taksteeg or Greenwood's on the Singel. For details see http://www.dutchgrub.com/best-brunch-in-amsterdam/

For a quick coffee and snack you could head to Bagels & Beans on Raadhuisstraat or The Coffee Company on Berenstraat.

There are also numerous bakeries nearby that often also serve coffee. For example try Année at Runstraat.

Sunday in Amsterdam

Sundays unfortunately are a little difficult in Amsterdam as many restaurants are closed. I actually wrote an entire post on it because of that.

Lastage, As, and Bussia are all good options.

Also look at Blauw for modern Indonesian a bit away from the center, Fyra for a cozy place with an international menu, or Hotel De Goudfazant for a hip, industrial looking restaurant with a French menu on the other side of the water in the north of Amsterdam.

Amsterdam for one night only

Hi Monique,

Sunday is indeed not easy in Amsterdam, so I wrote a post on my blog about recommendations for restaurants open on Sunday.

Restaurant As: www.restaurantas.nl - International
Restaurant Blauw: amsterdam.restaurantblauw.nl - Indonesian
Restaurant Fyra: www.restaurantfyra.nl - International
Hotel de Goudfazant: www.hoteldegoudfazant.nl - French

A pretty good selection, I think. So there is hope!

One day in Amsterdam...

Agree with smnadler. People understandably are looking for authentic food when traveling and the rijsttafel is a popular option, but not really that great. www.tempodoeloerestaurant.nl does good, traditional rijsttafels and is fairly central.

For a great local treat not far from the van Gogh museum, get some great french fries at hole-in-the-wall Vleminckx on Voetboogstraat.

Amsterdam Marathon carboloading (pasta!) and recovery meals

Hi motownrunner,

Guess I'll have to help you out on this one, having run a marathon myself and writing a popular food blog on Amsterdam. It's not an easy one, though, as carboloading places don't make my blog, local cuisine is often asked for but not plentifully available, and many good restaurants are closed on Sunday and Monday.

So for carboloading I would suggest www.deitaliaan.com (a bit fancier and very close) or www.lastoriadellavita.nl (an easy walk).

If you really want authentic, you could go for a "rijsttafel" at either www.tempodoeloerestaurant.nl (traditional, central) or www.restaurantblauw.nl (more modern, bit further away).

Alternatively on Sunday and matching your Monday requirements, and actually open on both days, try www.restaurantfyra.nl (international menu, close by) or www.bistrotneuf.nl (French, in a great lively street).

Hope this helps. Let me know if you need more info and good luck with the 42.2 km! You'll be surprised how small Amsterdam is - the course will actually take you outside the city to nearby Ouderkerk!

Eating with and Infant in Amsterdam

Two places that are always full of kids and their parents are Casa e Cucina (www.casaecucina.nl) and @Seven (www.at7online.nl).

Both are somewhat away from the center, Casa e Cucina around Vondelpark and @Seven near RAI. They are mostly good for lunch and sandwiches. They are very child friendly, and also genuinely nice.

NY Chowhound coming to Amsterdam. Need some help please

Your question is quite general and hard to answer. You might want to check out my blog for lots of suggestions.

Going by vicinity to the hotel and bigger budget, I would suggest Blauw aan de Wal. It's a beautiful restaurant in a typical Amsterdam building, smack in the middle of the red light district. The menu is modern international and very well executed. The service professional with character.

Chinese Food in Amsterdam

Hi eoj,

There's definitely a real lack of good Chinese restaurants in Amsterdam. Not sure why. Might be that due to historical reasons Indonesian cuisine has been very strong and might have kept Chinese out. Would be curious to find out the real reason...

Off your list, I would recommend Nam Kee, Oriental 128 and maybe Chang-i. Nam Kee is the most authentic food, but very bare bones in terms of decor and ambiance. Oriental 128 describe themselves as "culinary Chinese", which means that it's rather high end and influenced by International / French cuisine. The food and especially service are excellent. Chang-i is more of a trendy, fusion style place. Kind of fun.

Hope this helps!

Fish and seafood in Amsterdam?

Hi galka,

Frank's Smoke House is the go to place for smoked fish. They are famous for the smoked salmon (wild Alaskan), but also do great herring and eel (paling in Dutch): http://www.smokehouse.nl/

I'm not really in love with any of the fish restaurants in Amsterdam, which is a shame for a city famous for its harbor and canals. I often find them somewhat bland and boring. If you do want to go for fish, Vis aan de Schelde as suggested by zuriga1 is a good option. Alternatively consider http://www.nevy.nl/, which is more trendy.

Amsterdam, Berlin, Bruge - thanks to all

Glad you had a good trip and great meals. Always happy to help and keen on hearing what people thought. So thanks for having reported back.

Sorry you didn't like De Witte Uyl. Hopefully the other great suggestions made up for it. I've heard disappointing feedback on De Kas a few times, but hadn't had that with De Witte Uyl except for yours and that of eoj. Will keep my eyes and ears open.

I guess it might be time to update my Best Amsterdam Restaurant list, which has been stable for quite a while. I recently also liked Hotel de Goudfazant, Blauw aan de Wal and Fyra to name a few.

Amsterdam - where to find good sausages?

I like http://www.berkshirebutcher.com

They don't have a shop and only do markets. They are at the market on Haarlemmerplein on Wednesdays and do some other events listed on the agenda on their site.

Amsterdam Question re Rijsttafels and Reservations

Glad you find my blog useful!

With respect to spiciness, it's different for everybody and hard to say, but my guess is that you want to ask them for extra spicy. In my experience dishes in the Netherlands on average are less spicy than in the US, and everything I had in Indonesia was much spicier than what I had in Amsterdam.

Amsterdam Question re Rijsttafels and Reservations

Hi Lexma90,

The prices are certainly per person. Blue Pepper is high end. They also serve the rijsttafel as individual dishes, i.e. not all dishes on the table at the same time, but brought and cleared one after another. I would think your daughter would be allowed to try some of the dishes as long as she ordered at least a main.

Sunday and Monday are difficult in Amsterdam as many restaurants are closed. I would therefore definitely recommend getting a reservation for those also. There are suggestions for restaurants that are open on my blog.

Amsterdam on Monday

Hi JC2,

Sundays and Mondays are unfortunately hard in Amsterdam. I actually just did a post on restaurants open on Sundays.

All of linguafood's recommendations are great. Staying in the Jordaan, you should definitely have lunch at Small World Catering.

How does http://www.restaurantfyra.nl/ sound for Monday? They are open, it's a very typical Dutch style building, though more of a French / Dutch / International menu, and is reasonably close to the Jordaan, less than 30 minute walk.

Berlin and Amsterdam dinners - what time

9pm is on the late side in Amsterdam. Many restaurants close their kitchen around 10pm and some locals might get reservations as early as 7pm. I guess it also depends on the restaurant, but 8pm or 8:30pm might be safer.

Amsterdam's Jordaan Neighborhood

Agree with Bordewijk for a splurge. De Belhamel is another option on Brouwersgracht, one of the prettiest parts of the Jordaan.

And of course Balthazar's Keuken, which is on my list of best Amsterdam restaurants and towards the southern end of the Jordaan.

Amsterdam's Jordaan Neighborhood

Struisvogel and Small World Catering are great options! Small World has huge sandwiches and other snacks and is the friendliest place in town.

Here are some more ideas:
- Cafe de Tuin for beers and local scene before / after dinner
- Pizzeria La Perla for thin crust pizza sitting around a large communal table
- Eetcafe de Reiger for typical Dutch style casual dining
- Burgermeester for freshly made burgers with unusual ingredients
- Koevoet for Italian home-style food in a very Dutch decor

Have fun!

Hamburg, specifically near Michaeliskirche (but also anywhere else)

Hi Klary,

Seems that we enjoy similar places in Amsterdam, so will try to help out with some Hamburg suggestions, although my time there seems almost as long ago as yours...

I enjoyed the Freischwimmer in Eimsbüttel - fun, unpretentious, friendly and a great mix of German and Mediterranean cuisine. It's a great area for bars between there and the Schanze. http://freischwimmer-hamburg.de

In that same area, and an incredible experience of unexpected flavors and textures, check out Artisan. A true foodie experience. http://www.artisan-hamburg.com/

For somewhat more standard, but also very good restaurants, you might want to try http://www.trattoriasalento.de/ for good Italian (also) in Eimsbüttel and http://www.el-toro.de for solid Spanish near Schlump.

Hope this helps!

Cheap Dutch specialties

Great list!

I definitely agree with Vleminckx for fries, Pancakes! and Small World Catering for sandwiches.

For sandwiches, I would add Broodje Bert on Singel. Big, reasonably priced and very good. For Indonesian, often the smaller take out type places have the best food.

Amsterdam - Restaurant Suggestions for 20th wedding anniversary celebration

I second Blauw aan de Wal and Le Restaurant as suggested by Klary and Nancy. Le Restaurant recently got a Michelin star. And Blauw aan de Wal not only has great food and service, but also personality.

Would add De Witte Uyl to the list. It's small and friendly, serves creative organic food and has a great wine list.

4 Days in Amsterdam w/ food obsessed family

Hi fress!

Glad you liked my recommendations. I hope they'll deliver! Let me try to help with a few of your questions:

Indonesian: I can imagine the kids would like the idea. Tempo Doeloe is more central and touristy and quite traditional, so might bring back those memories. Blauw is a bit further out, off the beaten path. It's slick, modern and somewhat expensive.

Coffee: I went to a very nice "private dining" evening the other day at http://www.carlodiluca.com/ in De Pijp. Carlo is a real Italian who loves anything food and actually roasts his own coffee and espresso.

Eet cafe: Cafe de Reiger is a good option! Alternatives would be http://www.cafeloetje.nl/ for mostly steak and french fries or http://www.vooges.nl/ for a bit more upscale place with a Dutch / mediterranean menu.

Hope you have a great time and looking forward to your report!

Amsterdam chow recs around Waterlooplein or thereabouts

Thank you, lingua! Very kind of you to recommend my reviews :)

Will try to post more affordable options in the future, Degustation. In case you have one night left, Eetcafe Vooges on Utrechtsestraat comes to mind. It's small, and like other eetcafes a mix of cafe and restaurant. Menu is a mix of French and Dutch and they have a small, but decent wine list: http://www.vooges.nl/

Eater Comes To Amsterdam

Hey scrumptiouschef,

Glad you like my blog!

Sorry I didn't get back to you on your questions - I was traveling. You mentioned being in Amsterdam in January, so assume it's too late to answer now. Let me know if you still do have questions.

I did get a good laugh at lingua's obvious answers on the best coffee in town. Too funny! These are some good roasts. Kashmir Lounge on Jan-Pieter Heijestraat is another option. And the Rokerij is ok too.

Please do let us know what you did / did not like!

Cologne, Brussels, Bruges, Amsterdam

Hadn't seen any replies on the Amsterdam list yet. Hope it's not too late.

Amsterdam is expensive when it comes to food. I'm afraid you will have a hard time finding a good dinner for under € 20,=. And the top restaurants will set you back much more than that.

So that criterion definitely eliminates De Kas, De Witte Uyl and Restauant As.

I would also caution against La Oliva. It looks great, but the food is not good and it's expensive.

Small World is great for lunch. Amazing sandwiches, tapas and other organic snacks. Vleminckx also closes early. Do make sure you stop by during the day for the best French fires in the city.

Thai Bird is a good option. Great Thai food and probably less than € 20,=.

For other ideas, you might want to look into Zus en Zus on Overtoom. They do a good prix fixe menu at € 25. That's probably the cheapest good food you will find. Eetcafe Reiger in the Jordaan is also good - mostly steak and fries.

I had a nice Sloe Gin cocktail at Schiller's Liquor Bar in NYC a few weeks ago. I kind of worked like a Tequila Sunrise, but with sloe gin, regular gin and blueberry syrup at the bottom.
