Looking for down home country food in Richmond

for future reference, I'm guessing McCleans Diner would suit

BBQ in Richmond!

So I tried the ribs. Fine, but not as good as I expected.

Went to ALamo last week for lunch. Like the place, but so so BBQ. The texas brisket sadwich was good, but not due to the Q

The Roosevelt

eh, I thought it was good, not great. Really nice vibe/decor. I liked the food, didn't love it. I'd go there without a thought if I were in the area, but wouldn't wait an hour for a table.

Takeaway - good neighborhood spot

Any early Pasture reviews? [Richmond, VA]

Fine, to my mind, nothing special. I don't like the decor, feels to sterile to me. The beers on tap are excellent, might be the most interesting selection in Richmond. I find the food good, but forgettable - was just there last week and can't even remember what I ate.

While I wouldn't call myself disappointed, none of our party has any urge to rush back. I hope it succeeds, but..

Where is chef Peter Chang now?

I ate at the Charlottesville place a month ago while he was in the kitchen. Simply stunning, he really is that good!

Good to hear. It was great, but really went downhill so I haven't been back.

Yeah, food at racine is surprising. Creative guy with good execution in kitchen

Making a list for a friend moving to Richmond VA need basic rec's please.

As per above, the place I generally compare Richmond to is Brooklyn. And yeah, the city is pretty full of people who moved here from elsewhere now.

Mekong is GREAT for beer, but only so-so for food. People should be aware.

8 1/2 has great takeout pizza and subs. Whole menu is great, actually.

Coffee - lamplighter in fan is ok, there's a place in the museum district which is much better. I'm a coffee obsessive though, and quality of microfoam matters to me

Don't know anoaka, but malabar is great Indian too

Nope, Richmond has changed an incredible amount since when you were here. Night and day, seriously. I moved here from Boston, and feel no culture shock

Sadly, have to agree on Avalon. Had one great meal there, and every one since has been worse and worse. Think they changed chefs :-(. Can no longer recommend it, last eal was downright bad.

Currently like magpie a lot. Think chef was the chef at stronghill, out on his own now

Havent had desert there, but was really surprised by how good the food was the one time we ate there. Haven't gone back because it seems so far out of the city, and we have so much good Italian closer.

I've heard good things about the prix fixe, and it takes price out of the equation, could see that making sense. Keep meaning to try it, haven't yet

Currently am a big fan of water grill in carytown. Recommended by a friend from manhattan, ironically, and totally justified. Best fried green tomatoes in Richmond so far (but ehh shrimp and grits)

We go to Bellytimber a lot for burgers, it's kid friendly. think it's an offshoot of mezzanine. Loud bar scene, but good food. I'd rec the Mexican pizza.

Racine is another bar with really really good food. One of my favorite places in Richmond currently

Richmond recs needed, some restrictions

Another vote for franklin inn, but it's very small... Be warned about table availability

selba: richmond

My wife had a great meal there. She and I then went and had a mediocre meal. Hopefully it will end up more like the first than the second....

Nice bar and garden room, it'll be great for brunch

Any Richmond Hounders tried The Roosevelt or The Magpie?

Magpie is excellent. Be warned, not many tables

Went back that weekend - 3 times going to Acacia in the last couple of months. Won't be doing it again for a LOOOOONG time. It's fine. Just fine. For the money, there are a lot better places in the area that I'd rather go to.

My wife and I decided it was our 5th favorite place that month. Which would be fine, but the prices don't justify that.

I honestly think the decor thrills people, like Balliceaux (which is dreadful). Its very un-Richmond. But I've lived in Miami and London and NYC - the warmed over Richmond version doesn't excite me. I'd rather a place that looked like it belonged in Richmond, and served better food.

Italian bakery near Richmond, VA?

oh sure, I've no complaints about the service - nothing's ever "wrong", but they may well be the most resolutely not friendly place in richmond (as distinct from un-friendly).

Though I could see how you could make an Orange ricotta pie, coming out of northeast italian culture its just weird.

Don't get me wrong - 8.5 is one of the best takeout places I've ever come across, anywhere in the world. I get food from there constantly

Seafood Dives in Virginia Beach & Wiliamsburg?

you are pretty out of luck in Williamsburg in my experience - it's pretty much all strip mall, plus 3 "fancy" places

Richmond Virginia Best Hamburger and French Fries Combo

gotta disagree. I like cookout, but its not incredible. Better than Wendy's or BK or McDs, but its no In-n-out.

I'd go there, but I wouldn't wait in line (and there's a long one these days)

Lunch in Cambridge, MD

The bar/crabshack over by the docks is pretty good - snappers?. Hyatt probably has the best food though

If it was your last meal where in Virginia would you eat?

Louisiana Flair. Great New Orleans Po'boys on 322 Grace Street. Its the real deal. First place outside New Orleans I've ever eaten at where the food tasted "right"

If it was your last meal where in Virginia would you eat?

also 8.5 = takeout place from the same people.

If it was your last meal where in Virginia would you eat?

c'mon. Joes Inn is awful. I just can't figure out what people like about it, aside from the fact it's dirt cheap. I live around the corner from it, so I wish I could say better things.

BBQ in Richmond!

Yeah, Buzz and Neds is fine, but not spectacular.

BBQ that is. A bunch of the sides are REALLY good. Best hushpuppies I've ever had.

Haven't tried the ribs yet.

Help me find the Best Grits in Richmond, VA???

If shrimp and grits, I'd vote for the ones at Mezzanine and Zeus Cafe in carytown

Looking for a Weekend's Worth of Eatieries in Richmond

these are good suggestions

huh. I'll try to go by Acacia this weekend, and see if I change my mind. I admit that much as I love desert I'm trying not to order it these days... I'm at my usual winter point of overindulgence, but with less exercise than usual.

An aside - the chef left Avalon and the sous chef moved up, but I've no complaints about the change

Richmond Restaurant Bucket List

Mekong's got a great beer selection, but the food is pretty mediocre - I'm sure you'd do better in SF on the Vietnamese front.
