Trader Joe's - Rego Park - Update

That was highly amusing. I do agree.. there is a touch of bus phobia.. but if you have some time on your hands.. the bus is the jam! The bus offers prime chow scouting! Buses usually wind through neighborhoods not accessible otherwise... often passing restaurants or other food establishments worth a trip back.

On another note, the trip to TRader Joe's can be a whole day affair! Not too far away from the soon-to-be TJ's is Atlas Park! Shopping, movies, decent food and The Amish market.. a decent supermarket for sure. Check it out!

Filipino open late? - Woodside & 69th

Good morning all,

I am looking to eat some delicious Filipino food in the Woodside/69th Street area with a large group of people. I feel like all of the restaurants around there close somewhat early. This is a birthday dinner so there are planned activities after the meal (bowling @ 34th Ave Lanes) and so I dont want too much downtime inbetween. Any suggestions?

I have eaten at Ihawan, Perlas and Kyrstal's.. and remember Perlas and Krystal's being somewhat inconsistent.

The other option is another cuisine alltogether.. but you know when you get the craving/fever.. its hard to get it out of your mind!

Pizza in Sunnyside

The closest to Grimaldi's style pizza is in Forest Hills and is called Nick's. I believe its on Ascan Ave or Street. Either way sometimes I think Nicks is better than Grimaldi's as it hasnt let the hype get to its head. While you are there you should try the house salad which has this fantastic dressing which is hard to describe but delicious.

As for Sunnyside, I would second Marabella's and add a peculiar recommendation, Giovanni's. Giovannis is a Mexican joint on the corner of 47th Ave and 47th Street. They serve all manner of food there. Once you get past the craziness of the menu try a slice of pepperoni. Its not the best nor is it typical NYC pizza but it sure is satifying in a good way. The other stuff on the menu is pretty good too.

Chinese in Sunnyside

I would add Wah Yeung's 43-24 43 Ave or New China Taste on 46th Street between 47th Ave and Greenpoint. Non greasy and actually kind of tasty but I do agree really awesome chinese is lacking. There are somevery amusing posts on the state of Chinese in Sunnyside if you run a search.

New to Sunnyside. Need info about EVERYTHING.

I am surprised no one mentioned Oki on QB & 46th Street. Granted the quality of the fish has not been consistent for the past couple of weeks.. much to my dietary dismay.. but when Oki is on.. they are on.. I mean I can't imagine living these past two years without a Happy Roll or a Spicy Salmon Hand roll.. Ariyoshi has the cute menu but Oki has the potential to be great. Go to Yamakaze for soups and noodles..

I second everything on De Mole.. formerly El Jarro. The menu is exactly the same as is the quality.. they just changed the name. Enchildas Verdes con Pollo always delivers.. and the Tres Leches is a heavenly dessert... my boyfriend pops a lactaid or two just so he can indulge in the awesomeness. Chips (next to the movie theatre) is also a good option... their black bean puree.. which must be cut with sour cream is quite good.. Oh yes... and The HAAB! This place is so unassuming I missed it for quite some time.. Its this little Mexican cafe on the corner of 47th Ave and 48th Street. Great for breakfast or lunch/early dinner. People are so nice! They do not get as much business as they should!! Its not very big.. but I suggest the Haab Omelette.. complete with chorizo and beans.. early in the morning.. so so good!

As for Chinese.. it sure is lacking.. I will have to try Wah Yeung but I would also suggest New China Taste on 46th Street at 47th Ave. Not greasy at all.. and overall a tasty chinese option.

And I love Rose's Restaurant! (QB & 45th next to the OTB) Especially for breakfast.. Love me some Farmer's Breakfast or the Irish Omelette. Always friendly.. always delish.

The only thing I wish the hood had is vietnamese because I am obsessed.. but just as other folks said.. when the feeling comes upon me for banh mi or other viet treats... I just hop in the car or on the train!
