Fresh Curry Leaves in Savannah?

cook262, FWIW, I stopped off at Shivam this morning to pick up some chutneys and asked about fresh curry leaves. They showed me a pack of them from their refrigerated section, and said they routinely carry them. Not sure what happened with your visit, but they most decidedly have them in stock now.

72 hour pass in Columbus, GA

Columbus, eh? The only thing that comes to mind foodie-wise around there is the Ranger Burger and its many variations at Four Winds Restaurant in Cusseta, just south of Fort Benning (464 Ga Hwy 26). It's not the best of anything, but its unique and an experience every everyone, especially Fort Benning soldiers, needs to have.

Second with extreme prejudice kengk's reco of the Museum of the Infantry; they've got some absolutely unbelievable stuff there.

Helen, Ga area

The Smith House in Dahlonega comes to mind as far as a place to go with a hungry baseball team. Family style meals with meat and vegetable dishes for passing around the large tables. The several times I've eaten there over the years, I've found the food to be pretty good. Not the best country cooking I've ever had but far, far from the worst.

Dahlonega was the site of America's first gold rush, and the U.S. put a mint there back in the days to punch out gold coins. Might be a fun stop for the baseball team if you wanted to work a little "edumaction" into the trip.

Flying into Jacksonville-driving up to Savannah

Depending on what strikes your fancy, and FWIW, I like half-kilo's suggestion (BJ's in Darien), beteez's reco re: Southern Soul BBQ (get the fried okra side), and meljohn's reco re Skippers, which has the added advantage of a view. Have a great drive through some beautiful country.

You all set for Savannah? There's plenty of discussions - including many that are recent - that should pop up in a search.

Just had a few meals in Savannah, May 1-2, 2012

Daniel Berman owns a.lure. A local food writer describes Berman's style as "farm–to–fork produce, natural meats and seafood that comes fresh from regional waters." Berman previously ran the well-regarded Kasey’s Gourmet Grille on Waters Ave. As you stated, a.lure is pretty new and I haven't had a chance to try it yet but it's on my list for sure. Glad to hear you had a good meal there.

Mrs Wilkes _is_ good. I remember Mrs Wilkes from back in the late 60s and early 70s when a local could get in the d@#$%^ place, LOL! I still go with out-of-town guests who want to eat there, but not many locals can afford an hour or two line just to get in the door.

Wiley's BBQ is a favorite of many on this board. I've never been to the mother ship, but I've had Wiley's cater different events I've attended and always enjoyed their Q and the rest of their food.

Thanks for the write-up and glad you found some good eats.

Savannah -- 4 dinners and 3 lunches

Noble Fare followed by E's on 37th are a great one-two punch. It's a little hard to choose between OPH and Garibaldi's for night 3, but maybe Garibaldi's? If that leaves you needing to fill night 4, OPH. Assuming you can't get in any of the first three, alternates I'd reco would be Cha Bella on E. Broad Street at Broughton, or Local 11Ten, but you should also consider AJ's or Sundae Cafe at Tybee Island (Savannah's beach - but don;t dare call it Savannah Beach, LOL!).

Ken's reco of Crystal Beer Parlor is a good one. I'm partial to their shrimp salad sammiches, and they have pretty good onion rings, if you swing that way. Really, their whole menu is very decent. Another good lunch opportunity would be Vic's on the River. The Distillery is a place I tried recently that seemed to have very good lunch food (burgers, reubens, etc.) and an excellent selection of craft brews. Hilton Head, there's gotta be good places over there, but (some? many?? most???) Savannans tend to stay away as the traffic is usually horrid.

Savannah chef's tasting menus

You and your wife had some great food at some of Savannah's best places. I had a Snapper special that sounds very similar to the one you describe when I was at Elizabeth's a couple of weeks ago during the Savannah Music Festival. The Duck, Duck, Goose at Noble Fare is wonderful, especially when they serve it with plenty of the foie gras, LOL!

I enjoyed (and empathized with) your comment about not really needing another expensive hobby. Ever tried cigars??

Tasting menu at Noble Fare one night and then at E's for the next eevening??!??? You da man, ken, LOL!

Indian Grocers in Savannah?

Hi, cook262. For Indian pantry items, I shop at Shivam Indian Grocery at 54 W Montgomery Cross Road. That's on the north side of Monty X-Road between White Bluff Road and Abercorn Extension. It's located around to the back of a small strip shopping center laid out perpendicular to the road - it's a little squirrelly to find. I don't know whether they have fresh curry leaves or not, but their phone number is 912-925 6677.

Many fresh spices etc can be obtained locally at The Fresh Market off Abercorn Street south of DeRenne, although I don't know whether they carry fresh curry leaves.

Hope you enjoy your stay in Savannah.

I don't know the Flying Fish. Give us a report if you go.

Williams had its ups and sown over the years. I say this as someone who would go there with my family and out of town guests growing up in Savannah during the 50s and 60s. I later frequented the place when in town. The closest I can think of to it now might be AJ's on Tybee, but AJ's is on such a higher culinary plane that it's difficult to compare the two. However, if your looking for fried shrimp or oysters, AJs is the place I would go.

Savannah chef's tasting menus

I don't recall the price on Elizabeth's tasting menu, kengk, but I'm thinking we might have paid around $90/per several years ago. It's the only tasting menu I've ever done, and I'm surprised I got away with it that one time - while my wife enjoyed the dinner, those things are really too much food for her.

Although I enjoy eating at quite a few Savannah restaurants, E's is far and away my favorite. I never ate there, to the best of my recollection, when anyone other than the Butch brothers were running he place. E's tasting menu was spectacular, BTW.

If Noble Fare pairs with wines, that's prol an excellent deal.

re: protocol on market price - I would simply ask Sapphire for a range of prices one might expect to be charged for the tasting menu before you make your reservations. You can always decide when you get there whether to pull the trigger based on what your waiter tells you what tonight's price is. If he mentions a price that's silly/crazy, order off the menu instead and mark it down to experience. or walk out and go over to E's or NF....

Hole in the wall seafood joints in Charleston??

Sue, I had lunch at The Seewee last fall - great foodie joint. Good to see it get the SiMP stamp of approval.

Savannah private dining for 40-50 people, wedding party in Historic district. Any ideas?

Nice pics. Cool critters - For several years, my brother-in-law kept a large South American male named Bubba here in Savannah . They sure love their tails, LOL!

Hope you and your guests enjoy your stay here.

All have their fans, coatiben. We especially like Noble Fare. Sapphire Grill is probably the closest of the three to Davenport House, with Local 11 Ten being farthest; it's located on Bull Street south of Forsyth Park.

Cha Bella is a pretty good restaurant downtown that serves some vegetarian dishes. I've had a sauteed vegetables over linguini thing there that was one of the best dishes I've ever eaten. Might be worth a look.

BTW, what kind of coati do you have? Mexican or one of the bigger South American ones?

Savannah private dining for 40-50 people, wedding party in Historic district. Any ideas?

I like meljohns reco re: the Davenport House, which is an absolutely beautiful house museum located downtown. I also like his reco re: upstairs at Garibaldi's. IMO, Garibaldi's has always been a very good Savannah restaurant serving very good food.

As another option to consider, I recently attended a reception for Wynton Marsalis and the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra held in an upstairs banquet room at The Pink House. My wife's sister, who attended with us, was very impressed with the facility, and thinks this will probably be the location for her daughter's wedding reception next year. The reception featured tables piled high with Savannah/Low Country finger foods and waitroids circulating with trays of great apps. A couple of bars with liquor, beer, wines, and soft drinks. A table of excellent handmade chocolates. Should be able to handle 40-50 or more guests with ease. The Pink House and the Davenport are not quite as far apart as Davenport and Garibaldi's.

GA PIG Closed

Agree with kengk. Hearing that the location will become a new strategic outpost for Southern Soul, well, that is GREAT news! Best of luck with your new location, guys.

Savannah seafood?

AJ's and Sundae Cafe are my two super fresh seafood go-to places, and both are excellent. They are located on Tybee Island, about a 15 mile drive from downtown and well worth the drive. They are both casual beach places.

For something fancier, they do seafood very well at Elizabeth on 37th, Garibaldi's in City Market, and the Pink House on Abercorn off the square between Broughton abd Bay. None of these three are, strictly speaking, seafood places, but they do speak the language.

Hope y'all enjoy your visit.

Only 1 Day in Savannah - Where to Get the Best Lunch?

Be forewarned. FWIW, and IMHO, the location on Ogeechee Road was a perfectly miserable experience the one and only time I went there. I would have to get some five star recos about that place to even consider going again. You do not want to experience what I had to endure at the UHOP on Ogeechee. The folks were friendly enough, but the food was execrable. and for ten bucks?? 'nuf said.

Only 1 Day in Savannah - Where to Get the Best Lunch?

Great photo, mikeh. Yep, that Jones Kitchen's food, all right! I recognize their fried okra.

Looking for a great lunch spot in Charleston

Sue's recos are excellent, as always. If you prefer to stay downtown, I've always had a nice lunch at Slightly North of Broad. They have a nice charcuterie plate, assuming, like me, that you're a fool for that kind of thing. I've always liked SNOB's shrimp and grits presentation as well.

Need Reco's for St Simmons

I can vouch for the two Darien recos. Skippers has a bit more atmosphere overlooking the water. IF they have them, their fried soft-shell crabs are exceptional.

BJ's is a locals favorite spot, right on U.S. Highway 17 on the north side of town. Good food and plenty of it.

Need Reco's for St Simmons

kengk, that would be Southern Soul BBQ, and domenexx, its well worth stopping by for lunch or dinner, eat in or take out.

2020 Demere Rd, St Simons Island, GA

I reco their huge pulled pork sammiches and their great fried okra as a side dish. I don't get by St Simons all that much, but I'm thinkin' about it now, LOL!

Best food in Savannah????

You did good to start with Elizabeth. I took my wife for Valentines Day and its probably the +/- 20th time we've eaten there. Love it!

Agree with kengk on Noble Fare.

For your third night, let me suggest Cha Bella (I know - sounds Italian, but it's not really), The Pink House, or Garibaldi's, assuming you want a third night of fine dining. If you want someplace decent, fun, more reasonably priced, and a local landmark, I would suggest Crystal Beer Parlor.

Hope you enjoy your stay in our city.

Savannah - I-95 (exit 94)

I'll take a stab at this. I don't have anything out at I-95 and State Route 204 that's not fast food or a chain restaurant or mediocre. The closest local good restaurant is going to be Tangerine, 11215 Abercorn Street (912-920-5504). Abercorn Street is what SR 204 turns into once you hit Savannah's south side. Tangerine is an intimate (i.e., small) fusion restaurant owned by Sean and Ele Tran and they serve up first rate food. We go there or to their sister restaurant Ele probably half a dozen times a year (we eat at home the vast majority of the time, so we really like these places). They serve a great duck w/ vegetables with a Thai curry sauce. They always have fresh fish specials. Simple items like pad thai they do well. Their sushi is excellent. http://tangerinefusion.com/menus.htm for their menus, if you wanna look around.

There are lots of good restaurants downtown. The best way to get downtown from where you'll be staying is to come north on I-95 and take the first exit, I-16 east, into Savannah. You should be there in fifteen minutes. There are lots of recos for restaurants on the site. Try a search and narrow down what sounds good, maybe?

Restaurants in Durham?

I miss The Top Hat.

BBQ in Savannah

gb, Blowin' Smoke at 514 Martin Luther King, Jr. Blvd (912-231-2385) is probably the best downtown. Pretty damned decent. http://www.blowinsmokebbq.com/

Some folks like Wall's, which is a little hole-in-the-wall at 515 E. York Lane (912-232-9754). Not bad at all, either. I like getting a sammich from them at lunch time and sitting out in one of the nearby squares to knock it off. See http://www.savannahoffthebeatenpath.com/Food/wall%27s_bbq.htm

One place downtown I haven;t tried is Angel's at 21 W. Oglethorpe Lane (912-495-0902). See http://www.angels-bbq.com/ I do need to try that place someday.

You comin' for the Rock 'n' Roll Marathon? In any case, hope you enjoy your time down here.

Savannah dinner besides Pink House - need help desperately...

I eat at E's on 37th several times a year. slacks and a shirt with a collar will get you into Elizabeth's all night long. will other guests be wearing coats and ties? yeah, prol', But E's on 37th is the best Savannah has to offer, and it may well be the best Georgia has to offer. Why deny yourself? I know you can get tasting menus back home, but the tasting menu is spectacular, if you like to be surprised and then overwhelmed. E's fits your bill to a tee with respect to the best regional seafood/southern we have to offer.

Crystal Beer Parlor

Athens GA Wedding Catering Ideas?

I like Dax's suggestion. Lee does the annual Ossabaw Island Foundation Pig Roast event which we've attended every year the past five years. Serving food outdoors in a buffet line is challenging at best, and I'm not a fan of buffet lines, but I've never eaten anything at the Ossabaw gig that wasn't really good. Those folks make some good food.

Tybee Island - Restaurant Recs and Where to Buy Fresh Seafood

AJs and Sundae are excellent informal seafood restaurants. FWIW, I've had some of the best seafood I've ever eaten at AJs including their nightly specials and their buffalo shrimp appetizer. They don't often have them, but do get their fried grouper fingers if they're available. Sundae's appears to be equally solid, but I've only eaten there a couple of times (fried oysters or fried shrimp are fresh, plentiful, and spectacular!).

The Social Club has excellent and very creative tacos - there's a pork and raisin one that is a party in your mouth. They're doing a good job over there on Butler.
