any sour cherries yet?
They seem to be starting to appear on menus. And crixa's amazing sour cherry pie has reappeared. But I haven't seen any for sale yet. Any sightings?
I'd really, really, really like an "ignore this thread" option. Please.
You're missing the point.
The point is, "mistakes" (and I did not think they were mistakes at the time) made long in the past should not be allowed to accumulate and, collectively, render your site useless to users. But that's precisely what is happening.
Until this is fixed, I'm out. Your choices in designing the sort feature were poorly thought through. And your decision to not implement some form of "ignore" button was stupid (for lots of reasons, including that it would give you all sorts of extra info on site usage).
Assuming you actually do want to increase usage and readership, I'd suggest looking at actual problems being encountered by users and fixing those actual problems. And doing so at a slightly higher priority than work on goofy 5-star rating systems and half-completed "mobile" sub-sites.
Or maybe I'm wrong and everything is going great. In which case, carry on.
Bye.

Commis -- Piedmont Ave. (Oakland)
"Gritty" seems to be a specific real estate term which means that the hipsters have arrived, displacing the artists but the developers have not yet moved in to displace everyone. So it's still being used wrongly, though differently wrongly than you might suspect.
Commis -- Piedmont Ave. (Oakland)
Yes, though it's not clear if there's any angle at all that it's visible from:

When I suggested that over on this thread here: http://chowhound.chow.com/topics/649475#5068533 there was a collective "aghast!" from the moderators.
The old system where ancient threads would bubble to the top of not the first page but the second and subsequent pages of "my chow" worked well, even though it was never clear precisely what the sorting criteria were.
I'd really, really, really like an "ignore this thread" option. Please.
It's depressing every time I log in to chowhound to find the pathetic "Things I ate/drank in college that I will never eat again" thread once again at the top of my "my chow" listing. Yes, it was a mistake for me to have, once, a long long time ago, posted something to it. But now I cannot make it go away.
There are about 10 equivalent threads that, every time I log in, are there at the top of the list. It's bad enough that, frankly, I've stopped logging on very much lately. Go ahead, Ms. CH Admin, check my login history. See if it isn't in a prefect inverse relation to the frequency of posts to the now-hopelessly-banal "What did your Mom always have on hand, that you NEVER do?" thread that I mistakenly touched a couple of years ago.
Yes, I'm aware of the different sorting options. This is not a suitable alternative. "Sort by latest post" is almost precisely the right thing except it needs an option to prevent the turds from floating to the top. Which they constantly do.
Alternatively, returning to the old habit of deleting pointless, rambling, negative threads might also suffice. Unless what you're trying to cultivate here is pointless, rambling negativity. Which is what is happening. I couldn't be the only one driven away by this.
Burritos in Oakland?
Wow. Screwedup CH software ate all my place links. Let's try again ...

Burritos in Oakland?
Almost all the taco trucks have burritos on their menu. They are invariably huge and
if you get a "super" burrito you will not need to eat for the rest of the week.
Favorite non-truck burritos over here:
Taqueria La Familia -- Four or five filling choices that tend toward various stewed meats.
also good fish tacos.
La Calaca Loca -- Big hefty mission-style burritos. I've only had the carne asada. Pretty ok.
Cancun -- Little more expensive than the others. Great salsa bar.
Los Cantaros -- They have several locations. I like the one on San Pablo and 54th.

Vietnamese crepe in Oakland?
Anh Hong has large tables and one time I was in there and they had pulled together everything along the east wall and had a group of maybe 30.
In addition to the crepe and seven courses of beef, I've had the shaking beef and chicken curry and everything has been really tasty. Decent beer options too.
Restaurants for San Fran Newcomer
Yes definitely let them know we all call it "Frisco".
You're asking a question that, no joking, can best be answered by
"check the recs section of whatever guidebook they took with them."
What they should really be doing is figuring out what the particularly great
places are right in their neighborhood. Because one of the more pleasurable
things out here is the way there's generally something pretty great no
matter where you are. But if anyone's going to help with that, you're going
to have to spill a little more info ...
This is Chowhound? In Austin?
Or at least the option of excluding "restaurants" that have no reviews.
Trader Joe's newbie

Their appeal is based, in part, in creating a sense of "I'm getting exactly what I get elsewhere but they've just put their own private label on it." Which certainly feels good. Sometimes they get busted.
Trader Joe's newbie
Because it has driven out the competition. And the techniques it has used
to drive out the competition have, it is possible to argue, been less than
forthright.
Paw Paw??
Two weeks ago, there was a vendor selling paw paws at the Saturday ferry building market. Under a big sign that said "Paw Paw". I was rushed past by my coffee-seeking friends and intended to come back and get some but failed.
Paw Paw??
Since this thread has come back to life ... to steer it a little bit back towards topic:
PawPaw came and went. Replaced by Olivia which came and went. It is now Digs Bistro which has thus far only done the came part.

Not true:

The word "happen" seems to suggest pure coincidence.
Oakland the culinary capital of Northern California?
Well, Coi isn't dated upscale frenchy, though that's maybe the exception proving the rule. And even Patterson is making an oakland play.
Still, I walked past the new Quince last night and it looked stunning. It took a while before it hit me what the special detail was, something I haven't seen in a long time here on the east side: tablecloths!
What's Your Favorite Food Movie?
Since this thread apparently will not go away .. and nobody's mentioned ...
Cool Hand Luke: "My boy says he can eat fifty eggs, he can eat fifty eggs."
Five Easy Pieces: "Now all you have to do is hold the chicken, bring me
the toast, give me a check for the chicken salad sandwich."
Proposing in San Fran (flying up from L.A.)
This thread makes me want to get married to everyone in it.
My choice would be: Waterbar. It's nextdoor to Epic Roasthouse.
Has a fabulous patio in what is probably the single most spectacular
setting in the city -- right under the bay bridge. If you time your
proposal to about 1.5 to 2 hours after moonrise, it will be up there
above the bridge towers. And right there, not 50 yards to the north, is
Oldenberg's "Cupid's Span" sculpture: http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/object/article?f=/c/a/2002/12/23/DD234651.DTL&o=0
The place is ridiculously expensive. But what the heck, you're getting married.
Text Size
What os/browser are you guys using? On osx/safari this seems to be working fine, though yesterday's changes increased the default font size by 2 points for me.
Commis -- Piedmont Ave. (Oakland)
While I dislike Bauer immensely and although Commis is right at the top of my list of Best Things Eaten All Year, I've gotta say I agree with pretty much all of his criticisms. Some things are just not working. What makes that interesting is the things that aren't working aren't errors in the sense of, "the pianist was hitting wrong notes", they're questions of interpretation as in, "his heavy-handed playing of the rondo threw the piece out of balance", which say as much about the listener as they do the performer.
On a practical note, we've addressed the overpriced wine issue on both visits by getting bottles from the middle of the white list, most of which are reasonable and well suited to the meal. The reds though are out of control.
How To Stop Following a Thread
That solution comes with its own problems. Threads you posted to months or years ago which you are, in fact, still interested in will then not pop to the top of the listing and you will probably miss them.
Not being able to flush a thread with an "ignore this topic" button, no matter how you have them sorted, is a significant annoyance.
One other thing that might work could be to hit the "report" link under your
post(s) in the dopey thread and ask the moderators to delete your post. The system doesn't notify you of additions to threads that you've been deleted out of. And if enough people did this, the moderators might have better luck than we've had convincing the CH developers that it's an issue worth fixing ...
Right column content drops below left column
This is quite remarkable. On the PRECISE ONE YEAR ANNIVERSARY
of this problem report -- it is now fixed! Thanks!
Countertop material: granite vs. solid surface (corian) vs. engineered stone (silestone)
I can't help with your specific problem but maybe it would help to point out to the Orange people that stress fractures at sharp corners of brittle materials has been a known engineering problem for at least three millennia and really came to public attention during WWII when a bunch of Liberty Ships, constructed with square port holes and hatches, cracked in half:

Visitor wants a special place to have a drink
Trad'r Sam's on Geary and 25th might be the closest place with "ambiance", where
that ambiance is primarily ancient, worn-out tiki. Rum drinks. Often hopelessly crowded.
Despite that it has great potential for a memorable-in-a-good-way evening.
Did you sell your Vespa to buy a fixie? In that case, Medjool's bare-bones rooftop
might be the place for you. Otherwise in the Mission, the Uptown at 17th and
Capp is a pretty genuine hole-in-the-wall (if not simply a hole) hangout -- you can
watch the hookers right outside the big window. Or maybe the getting-to-be-
quite-a-classic Rite Spot on Folsom and 17th a couple of blocks away. Rite Spot
has actual often-tasty food too.
Lamb sausage -- All sorts -- East Bay
The packaged merguez from Marcel et Henri, which I've seen recently at the west Berkeley Bowl, is really good and lamby.
Also good are the (packaged, frozen) sausages from Mangal's in San Leandro.

Dalla Torre, on the corner of Montgomery and the Filbert Steps? Italian. No idea what the floors were made of. It's been closed for five or six years at least.

I've had your chorizo crawl bookmarked for years.
