Recs for OC Performing Arts Center / Costa Mesa?

It looks good. I will have to get in there and try it.

It wasn't my intention to write them off, just expressing my preference. I've enjoyed Habana when I've gone.

$3.69/lb for prime beef!!

Thanks! I'll give that a try. I have a tendency to invite people over kind of spur of the moment, hence the shorter cook.

Getting the temp that low on the Egg takes some time, and once you go over, it takes an act of congress to bring the temp back down. Once it's at temp, though, it holds beautifully.

I start doing the beer thing when I light the coals :)

I have a mix of 8 parts balsamic vinegar (sometimes I use cider vinegar) to one part each soy sauce and worchestershire sauce that I spray on throughout cooking. The balsamic lends a nice sweetness and almost acts like a glaze. I have also been known to brush on bbq sauce for the last hour of cooking. It just depends on my mood.

I know I'm gonna get flagged for posting this on the wrong board, but I'm going to ask anyway. How long and at what temp for your beef ribs? I've got a BGE and usually do them around 300F for 3 hours or so. They've turned out great, but I'm thinking about going lower and slower. Thanks.

I would go for Bella Cuba over Habana any day. That being said, DTF or Taco Maria would be my top pick for the immediate area. Caveat: my recommendation for Taco Maria is based on recs from CHers that I really respect. I haven't been yet, but it's on the top of my must try list.

Newport Beach in January

Bear Flag is a good option for really good but no frills seafood.

Din Tai Fung is also a great recommendation. We've been several times, and it never disappoints. Put in your name and do some shopping while you wait.

Totally agree with the ARC recommendation. And Ramen Zetton.

I'm ashamed to admit that I haven't been to Taco Maria, but it is on the top of my short list.

I would add Sabatino's for excellent Italian Sausage or Cucina Alessa for their house-made pastas. There's also great Cuban at Bella Cuba across from South Coast Plaza.

L.A. Dish of the Month, December 2014 -- TAMALES

Used the DotM as an excuse to try something new. Tacos San Pedro in Yorba Linda is selling tamales by the dozen for the holidays. They are not on the menu, but I asked and they had pork, beef, chicken and cheese available at lunch today. I opted for the pork and a few tacos. The tamale was really good. The masa was firm, but moist and flavorful. The filling was just a little dry, but plentiful and really tasty.

As a side note, the tacos I had (cabeza, tripas and al pastor in order of preference) were solid, too. Not the greatest, but a great option close to my office.

Remember these Restaurants?

Was it Charley Brown's?

Solvang

Go to Saarloos and Sons in Los Olivos and do a tasting. I am a wine club member there and never miss a chance to swing by when I'm in the area. They do a lot of blends and syrahs. Their wines are great and a great value.

They also scratch make mini cupcakes that you can purchase in a flight to pair with the wine tasting. Now I don't have much of a sweet tooth, but these things are amazing.

Frozen Pheasants in OC?

I'm assuming Gem Meats was a bust. Brees' Meats in Garden Grove offers game meat processing, but I'm not sure if they sell it.

A quick Google search brought these...

I hope this helps.

Meat Up BBQ - Placentia

I went on 10/30 and was unimpressed...

We had the fries with brisket and bleu cheese, the porchetta and the brisket. My son had a plain cheeseburger.

The brisket on the fries was tender and juicy, but lacked smoke. The brisket entree and the porchetta were both dry and lacked smoke. The porchetta had some fatty parts, but the whole thing seemed like it needed more time on the smoker.

The fireslaw was nothing to write home about, but the beans and greens were good.

The burger was actually the highlight food-wise. Great beefy flavor and cooked perfectly medium rare. I know that this was a soft opening, so I'll probably give them another shot on the bbq. I will definitely be back for the burgers and beers. The beer selection is great.

Gamebirds in OC.......?

I haven't been in awhile, but Gem Meats used to have some game meats in their freezer. I've also bought whole ducks there.

Jagerhaus is good if you're in the mood for German. It's on Ball Rd. at the 57.

If you're in the mood for upscale Mexican, there's Anepalco's Cafe in the Ayre's hotel on Chapman & State College.

If you want to go over the top, head to The RANCH for martinis and an amazing steak.

Where to go for good "jack of all trades"Japanese restaurant?

I used to go there for lunch at least a couple of times a month. RIP indeed.

There is a Sushi Koto on Brookhurst in Fountain Valley. I wonder if there's any relation.

Kitakata: New Ramen in OC

Checked this out last week. The gyoza were fantastic. We didn't get the yuzu pepper paste but enjoyed making our own dipping sauce with what was on the table.

I had the chasu ramen. I loved the pork (and the amount of it) and the noodles. It seems that I enjoyed Santouka CM's broth just a little more, but it's been awhile since I've been there, so I think a return trip is in order so I can draw a better comparison. Still, this is place is great. I will definitely be going back.

Zetton is definitely a favorite, too.

Pizza Dough?

+1 on this. I've bought dough from my favorite local pizza joints on several occasions. They have always been happy to do it.

Best lunch in Costa Mesa/Irvine/Santa Ana for under $10

Had the cabeza taco (center) along with the chorizo (bottom) and al pastor at Taqueria El Zamorano (not to be confused with nearby Zamora) in the former Taqueria 2 Guys location. All were excellent, but cabeza was the standout. They didn't have tripas today, but I'll definitely be going back. The al pastor was even better in my date's burrito. Corn tortillas are handmade.

Tacos were $2.50 each, and the burrito was $6.50. Horchata is also excellent, but will push you a little over the $10/meal mark.

South Coast Plaza Din Tai Fung Rates With International Counterparts

I haven't noticed a significant difference between the two, at least where dim sum is concerned. I don't have much experience with the rest of the menu.

Delivery to Anaheim hotel?

You can try Restaurants Express (https://www.restaurantsexpress.com). They deliver from a variety of restaurants. Nothing earth shattering on the quality of the restaurants, but it will give you some choices.
