L.A. Dish of the Month, February 2015 -- Voting

Slater's 50/50 was supposed to have one as their burger of the month for January. I never made it in to find out.

L.A. Dish of the Month, January 2015 -- CHILI

Plus one on the lamb... and their chili isn't going to win any awards, but it's worth a try, too.

BURGERS

I plan on having them all this month, so it's a win win win, but I think we're long overdue for burgers.

Fried Chicken in Orange County?

This just came out on OC Weekly's food blog...

Some have been mentioned here, but there are some additional suggestions.

Good sopes South of Tustin?

I like the fish tacos at Hole Mole, too. Not the best I've had, but a great option for OC.

Not that far south, but try the sopes at Taqueria Zamora in Santa Ana. I've had them there and really enjoyed them.

now that it's back, where are the best foie gras dishes?

I had an impromptu date night on Saturday. We headed to Pueblo in Costa Mesa. Everything we had was amazing, but one of their specials was medallions of foie over toasted baguette topped with a sour cherry compote and mixed greens. It was sublime. It was my lovely dining companion's first experience with foie, and to say she loved it would be an understatement.

I was told that quantities are limited.

I was thinking foie burger with fried oysters. Too much?

What kind of sauce would you put on that?

L.A. Dish of the Month, January 2015 -- CHILI

In support of DotM, I had the chili con carne at Lazy Dog last night (my 12-year-old son's choice for his birthday dinner). The chili was not bad, but too sweet for my taste.

Side note: I made white bean and chicken chili using a recipe from Chow on Sunday. Great stuff, and the leftovers have been great for lunch. That's twice I've made chili this month without ever having made it before. Thanks, DotM for helping me add a new dish to my cooking repertoire.

Fried Chicken in Orange County?

Not traditional, but I like Da Hawaiian in Huntington Beach. Their Chili Peppa Chicken is awesome.

Further north, I've heard great things about Mrs. Bea's in La Habra, but I haven't gotten in there (yet).

Also there was a DotM thread awhile ago...

Early Bird in Fullerton got a mention. I've never had the chicken, but everything I've had there is great. Porthos also gives a nod to Wingstop in Fullerton for their Louisiana Rub chicken.

any upscale anaheim restaurants not near Disneyland

Agreed. He took us through a dinner at the Ranch one night. He helped us pair Pinot Noirs from different regions (CA, OR, WA) with our meal and walked us through the nuances of each. Really knowledgeable guy and very approachable. It would be easy to be intimidated tasting with him and it wasn't. I won't forget that meal.

Great rec on Park Avenue. I hadn't even thought about that.

+1 on this. I'm pretty sure Michael Jordan has moved on, but that shouldn't be a deterrent.

Looking for a nice dinner in North OC area.

I haven't been in years, but I remember it being pretty good. Nothing mind blowing, but solid food and good service.

The "Gastro" thing...

Thanks. I don't get up that way too often, but I'll keep it in mind. I don't mind and even sometimes enjoy the gastro food/setting, although there is a lot of it. A good beer selection always makes it more enjoyable.

I thought the same thing about TAPS. I like it, but it's pushing it on both fine dining and creativity.

I like the Napa Rose rec. I haven't been to Little Sparrow.

Classic fine dining and creative food in North OC can be tricky. Summit House is good for the traditional service/fine dining aspect, and they do prime rib really well, but there's nothing creative about their menu.

I think The RANCH would work well for you. I don't know about the seasonal menu right now, but they usually have some interesting items. Their cowboy rib steak is one of the best I've ever had. They have a great wine list, and the service has been top notch every time I've been in. They open at 5:00.

The "Gastro" thing...

I agree, especially on the IPA thing. When did brewing craft beer turn in to a contest to see who can hop-load their mash tun to the point where they kill the brews' other flavor characteristics? An do we need to have a .50+ ratio of IPA's to all other beer styles? I don't get it. Then again, I've never been a huge fan of IPA.

L.A. Dish of the Month, January 2015 -- CHILI

I had what would have been an appropriate dish for New Year's Eve, the chili tamale at The Hat, for lunch last week.

The chili cheese fries, with and without pastrami, have always been good for me here, but the chili tamale is a total miss. Bland, pasty masa with a bad filling. I didn't expect much from this, but it still managed to underwhelm me.

On a brighter note, I made steak chili for the first time at home last night, and it was a hit.

Recs for OC Performing Arts Center / Costa Mesa?

Thanks for the insight. We'll get there soon.

All we ever do with Shuck is go in for a pre-dinner dozen and a glass of wine, so I haven't really explored the rest of their menu. My girlfriend had never eaten raw oysters before I convinced her to try them, and now we have them at least once a week.

I would love to try C&T. Alas, I'm riding a desk in Brea these days and get to LA even less often than I used to.

Recs for OC Performing Arts Center / Costa Mesa?

I would highly recommend them. I went with my girlfriend on Friday (see, Porthos? I'm trying). They looked empty but said that they were booked for the night. We couldn't even get seats at the bar. It was a spur of the moment call to go there, so we hadn't made reservations, but I definitely will when we go back.

Which brings me to a question for those who have been there. They were less than half full when we got there. They were less than half full when we got done with our dinner elsewhere about an hour later. Is there turn time on tables that long that we couldn't have had dinner there?

FWIW, we ended up at Shuck for oysters and Pueblo for some small plates. Both were excellent.

French bistro in OC?

My guess (and this is pure speculation with some anecdotal support) is that most people associate French food with formality and stuffiness, which doesn't fit in with casual Southern California. I don't agree with that association, but I think it exists.

Another reason could be that what most people (excluding the discerning tastes of the Chowhound community) think of as Italian (pasta and red sauce) is a lot easier to produce than French food is. That being said, there aren't a whole lot of places doing Italian really well in Orange County.

Just my thoughts.

BTW, I agree with jaykayen's assessment below of ARC.

French bistro in OC?

There was one in Yorba Linda for a short period of time called Bistrot Massilia that I really enjoyed. Unfortunately, they closed earlier this year.

Bistro Bleu in Anaheim may come close to what your looking for, but I haven't tried it yet.

L.A. Dish of the Month, December 2014 -- TAMALES

I had Mexican Christmas with my girlfriend's family on Christmas Eve before heading out to my parents' place for White Christmas. The tamales were from Las Golondrinas in San Clemente. They were delicious. Moist, flavorful masa and a lot of really good filling. We had pork, chicken and chile/cheese. All were amazing, but the pork was my favorite. I ended up eating three at dinner and two more of the leftovers that we pilfered to take to my parents.
